LIVE TRANSMISSION FROM NEW ORDER
On September 24th John Peel got together with a few hundred close personal friends to celebrate something special - his 40th anniversary as a Radio DJ. His career started at WRR radio in Dallas, America, before he returned to the UK to work for the ground-breaking pirate radio station Radio London. He's been at Radio 1 since its start and is credited as helping thousands of bands get their first radio plays. All in all an excuse for a proper celebration.
The party was originally organised for a few weeks previous, but had to be postponed. Sadly this meant not everyone who had been invited to the original night could make it. New Order were going to play live, but as they had to miss it they sent a video message and live recording of 'Transmission'.

John Peel celebrates 40 years in radio

On September 24th John got together with a few hundred close personal friends to celebrate something special - his 40th anniversary as a Radio DJ. His career started at WRR radio in Dallas, America, before he returned to the UK to work for the ground-breaking pirate radio station Radio London. He's been at Radio 1 since its start and is credited as helping thousands of bands get their first radio plays. All in all an excuse for a proper celebration.
Radio 1 controller, Andy Parfitt, began the night by paying tribute to John:
"For 40 years John has been devoted to music, musicians and listeners. He is driven to seek out new music, he has an extraordinary capacity to sample something new, keep an open mind to listen to it, to listen without cynicism or pre-judgement. In all the genres for so many artists John has been there."
Then it was over to compere Marc 'Lard' Riley who thanked John for playing his bands records and the PRS cheques he got twice a year as a result, which was much help when he was unemployed.
First to perform was Billy Bragg, a firm Peel favourite, who took to the stage with just an electric guitar. He played some choice tunes, campaigned to make Monday a work free day and told he Mushroom Biriani story...

Also there was Coldcut, who provided hot DJ action between the live sets. The cool thing about the night was the majority of the guests didn't know who was going to perform. So Nick Cave walking on stage was a nice surprise. He went on to please the audience by including 'Into My Arms' in his seat as he treated us to a short but special set.
The night's headlining band was none other than Pulp. Jarvis and co took to the stage to play a short set of classic Pulp tunes, including a version of 'Help The Aged' which was nicely dedicated to John. Jarvis was is full posturing mood, and you can see our gallery of photos below...

With the bands over John took to the decks for his party mix set. To be honest it was the happy hardcore that got the crowd going, and no one knew what to make of hearing the opening of 'Kung Foo Fighting' - to be fair to John it was a remix though. Jarvis took over the decks to close the night and we went around with a camera to catch various Radio 1 people 'enjoying themselves'...
