The much-derided 1980s produced a kaleidoscopic variety of different music, much of which has endured in the public consciousness, while little has retained any of the critical approbation with which it was originally greeted.
New Order provide the greatest exception to this rule, perhaps because of their unwillingness to allow their music to be dominated by the synthetic production techniques of the era, and also because of the enduring quality of their songwriting. They have no inhibitions about experimenting with dance music structures, and managed to achieve a dual identity as both club favourites and leading rock band.
Having seen New Order evolve from tentative (post Curtis) synth-twiddling to monumental soundscaping via icily perfect techno-pop, we arrive at the first session of this CD. Recorded in 1998 the version of True Faith, Touched and Joy Division's Isolation draw heavily on the dance production values of the time, to devastating effect, while retaining the unmistakable bass hooks, guitar motifs and vocal melodies which make the track inimitably New Order. For Atmosphere the tempo and the arrangement are taken right down, the song emerging as a starkly powerful drum-led ballad, while Paradise sees New Order indulge their classic pop skills.
Slow Jam, Your Silent Face, Close Range and Rock The Shack were recorded in October 2001. The following year, guests at a party thrown to celebrate John Peel's 40th anniversary at Radio 1 were treated to a filmed performance of Transmission that the band beamed in a special tribute to John.
This performance appears at the end of this enhanced CD, Highlights of the party, and this performance, were broadcast on Radio 1 at the time but this footage have never been made available to the public until now.
