One Orange Juice (record) too many ?

Surely they don't honestly believe they can just resurrect the same sound as was coming out of Glasgow 23 years ago and think that nobody has noticed ?

They are one of many new bands that seem to be getting heaps of praise for rather average music lately.

You've obviously not heard a lot of the Scots indie scene from 1980-83......all FF are doing is churning out old Orange Juice-style songs (and even adopting a lot of the fashions Edwyn Collins et al were seen in). A lot of what came out of Scotland then was pretty good, check out Josef K, The Fire Engines, Orange Juice and quite a few more.

Don't mind the Franz, though I have to agree about the similarities (the most striking one for me is XTC). However, I might be slightly biased...

Picked up the DVD single of "Matinee" today to find my beautiful self making a few prominent appearances in the video, and also on the inside cover of the single. All the camp dancing and sitting around was worth it, since I ended up going out on the piss with the chaps in Bristol for 3 consecutive nights (one of which was at the expense of a high-profile gig in Paris - Bristol's cider can be a dangerous thing). Plus they're playing a gig at uni here on Sunday, and am awaiting some backstage beer with the boys. Not quite Molly standard, but a lot of my mates are impressed!

my tickets say the fleece though, gutted it got moved to the Anson rooms.

& there's nothing wrong with Bristols cider! (check out the stowford press at the wellie, or in the watershed for example)

I know what you mean, the Anson Rooms has shocking sound - I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs there last year, and the room just swallows the music. The Fleece has never let me down, happened to get my best ever audience recording there, courtesy of current NME darlings Razorlight, when they were supporting The Raveonettes back in November. Been a bit disappointed with the gigs in Bristol this year, haven't been to any that have knocked me sideways. My housemate says the British Sea Power gig on Tuesday was the maddest gig he's been to (and that's saying something).

As for the cider, can't knock a few pints of Exhibition from the old Corrie Tap - if you complete the challenge (15 glasses), you not only get a badge, but also the pleasure of being entirely unable to move for approximately 2 hours... Probably best to stick to a few double Knob Creek and cokes from Wetherspoons.

Trust me, they're not pseudo-intellectuals! Probably the most normal people you could come across, who are as amazed by their rise to fame as you or I would be if we suddenly found our mugs slapped across the NME week in week out. As the bassist said to me, "I can't believe you can get so much attention for making music - it's a piece of piss".

i was & resent the implication. never really liked orange juice - felicity sounded better when done by the weddoes in my opinion, rip it up was ok etc, ff just have better tunes.

anyway surely josef k, oj & the other postcard records acts were also art school wanker types?

i was & resent the implication. never really liked orange juice - felicity sounded better when done by the weddoes in my opinion, rip it up was ok etc, ff just have better tunes.

actually now you've got me started on this, i can understand the argument if you're talking about the hives, or the libertines or other 1 trick ponies, but dont see these guys as part of that.

but then all music references stuff that's gone before & as ahw says in 24hpp music is kind of a double helix, as one kind of music is in its descendancy, another is in the ascendancy & i am all for guitar bands making a come back.

I think Franz Ferdinand sound quite down-to-Earth; there's no bragging about excessive drink and drug use, and they still seem genuinely shocked that they've acheived commercial success, unlike a certain bunch of cat-suit wearing mullet modeling idiots, who've fired some rather unconstructive and stupid sounding broadsides on everyone from The Strokes to Radiohead. My contempt for them knows no bounds; I hate them even more than the Stereophonics.

And as for the originality debate, Music always goes in circles. I will concede that FF have some unoriginal elements to some of their tracks, but if they are producing exciting, intelligent and honest music, who cares? I for one would rather young teenagers buy Franz Ferdinand's album, listen to it repeatedly in their bedroom, talk about it to their mates and perhaps develop a taste for the bands that inspired it (like Joy Division for instance), than the Sun newspaper recommended, tired pathetic 80's mullet rock parade of egotisticaly unfunny inuendoes that is the Darkness.

Indeed: the revival of heavy metal/poodle rock is perhaps the worst thing to happen to popular culture this century. Or, indeed, ever.

I've listened to the whole album and have to say it's boring. Mind you I think The Strokes and The YYY's are junk too. The only "The" band I've liked has been The Raveonettes, but that's because the girl is quite the looker . I find it annoying to find their faces on every other page of the NME and other music magazines. I hope they don't become too popular here in the States.

Haven't heard the FF album, it's on Sony/Epic here in the US, I think, but I suppose I wouldn't mind it in small, single size doses, just like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Libertines, et al. I'd rather listen to something like that rather than than nu-metal rap bands or teeny female singers.

Of the Scottish stuff that was listed, I still listen to The Associates, Aztec Camera and Josef K more than anything else, OJ's version of L.O.V.E. was quite lame, though Consolation Prize and Blue Boy are pretty damn good songs.

Actually, the worst name I ever heard in terms of sheer stupidity was "...And You Shall Know Us by The Trail of Dead" Overlong, makes you think of a Goth-snyth trio (the band was more akin to the Strokes), and just too much for me.

Why can't bands have sensible names...like U2? :D :p

The higher ups at CBS have obviously decided to put their promotion behind FF, when this thread was alive, FF were just about to launch a US tour in late May/early June; now they're on tour again, sold out in Portland in a much larger venue, and I keep hearing Take Me Out on the radio at least three times a day, on regular commerical stations no less.

Gotta admit though I heard Take Me Out today at a club where women tend to lose track of where there clothes are (it's okay, I was on official work business at the time ;) ) and the lovely brunette on stage performed quite admirably to the sounds of these Scots.
