Depeche Mode to meet for new album
post date: November 16th, 2004
The band will be collectively gathering in Santa Barbara in early December, along with with Daniel Miller, Jonathan Kessler and producer Ben Hillier. In January 2005, after a holiday break, the band will start work on their new album.

SOFAD was a good album, bit of a shocker when I first got it and saw the pics of David inside and more of a shocker when I heard the album. It took time to grow on me. Ultra is a great album but Exciter, god was that horrible. However, I won't write them off after that album, I am sure they can pull of another great album :)
Their best stuff was AlWAYS the rinky-dink proto-techno of the early albums/singles. "New Life", "Dreaming of Me"......like the sound of two casio calculators falling in love. Absolute genius.
Then they became (in the words of an old NME review) "thunderously dull techno-goths". Still, if there's a globally famous frontman who's more of a chav than Dave Gahan I'll me eat my own shit. You can take the boy out of Essex.....;)

Well, maybe as a whole, but Dream On, When The Body Speaks, Freelove and I Feel Loved are good songs...
Depeche Mode is the only band I've seen more than once... 4 times in fact.. wait, I saw The Cure 2 times also...

NOBabe, I'm with you on this one. I hated Music For The Masses and it's put me off trying any more of their earlier work. All you need are the albums from Violator onwards IMO. BTW, I thought Exciter was great!

because the title of the album was very misleading. There were some good songs, I like comastose and dead of night. the rest just bored me. As far as Dream On, Freelove and I Feel Loved, the remixes were actually better than the album versions.
exciter was uninspired. bored.
ultra is full of great songs, even SOFAD which i can't listen to when it was released. i loved MFTM by release but if i listen to it today i don't know what was so great at that time with that record - except NLMDA!
i think DM have many, many hardcore fans and they will buy the new records but their best times are oven 
Exciter is not boring, it´s minimalistic. Martin Gore is fan of minimal electronics since years, the album producer was Mark Bell from LFO. That´s why it sounds a little bit like a sleeping pill, but not bad at all.
by the way, Martin Gore played a dj set in august in london. One of the songs was "atmosphere" a cover version by Technova.
DJ sets wow wee. Play yer own records it's easy all you need is a record player and records.

I know that many of you will be slightly sceptical over the 11th Depeche Mode studio album, especially those who thought that the direction that the band’s ‘Songs Of Faith And Devotion’ & ‘Ultra’ albums seemed to be taking them went off course with the subtle, though (in my opinion) brilliant ‘Exciter’ album.
But it was all part of the songwriting evolution as much as anything. Depeche Mode’s musical evolution may not entirely be natural (the band willingly concede this), but the long-term maturity of Martin Gore's songwriting has had as much to do with the change as the lightning-paced development of audio technology, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise when they want to do different things.
It is however a welcome sign that Dave seems to have noticed that the 'Exciter' album may have strayed from the course of evolution that the band appeared to be taking, and this is partly why I (as a DM fan) am prepared to give him my cautious support in him taking part of the songwriting duties.
I have said on several web forums that the musical 'performance' of Depeche Mode seems to be too much left to the producer, great a job Mark Bell undoubtedly did on 'Exciter' - the biggest loss for the band since Alan's departure in 1995.
If Dave is able to bring more out of everyone else involved with the 11th studio album, in more ways than just the songwriting, a more guitar-based album than ever before – of high quality - is not only perceivable, but much more of a mouth-watering proposition than we may at first believe possible.
Dave needs to get back to drugs, he's much more boring now ;) Both solo albums were crap, so was Exciter, and they need to get their act back together or I may stop caring for them.

Maybe Dave and Martin would be more friendly to each other (Dave not asking for more influence on the music) if Dave were high all the time.
I agree with Tristan, they need to get back on drugs, how about a lethal dose of Heroin, and do us all a favour.

my favorite mode member is fletch. what the fuck does he do anyhoo in the studio? i love him cause his job is to clap at live shows and sing along, but away from the mic, and every 2 minutes, hit a key on his keyboard. fucking brilliant. i want his job!

Alan Wilder was the prime element in shaping Depeche Mode's sound in the studio and live (the two don't differ much). Since his departure, they've had to rely on outside producers much more.

Talk about easy money! At least Fletch admits it. In an interview in "101" he went through the band members' roles & said "I bum around".
