Music 2004

As its pretty much that time of year. State your fave and least faves tunes, bands, gigs of the year...

Mylo,for me has been a great find-possibly my album of the year. I`ve bought loads of stuff in the past 12 months,but nothing seems to have had major impact other than this.

Strange really cos 2003 had quite a lot of big albums for me.

Glastonbury Various System 7 gigs, and; David Rovics at Belper

Pretty good studio LP, great compilation, and ace reissues of The Fall; continued existence of The Mekons; Abattoir Blues by Nick Cave; live Neko Case album, Roman Times by Camper Van Beethoven.

The bad: ALL nu-metal crap still played on "alternative" radio; Ashlee Simpson; Lindsay Lohan's singing (her breasts excluded from this list); Los Lonely Boys ( retreaded 20 year old Los Lobos tracks, brilliant boys!!!!) ; This City by Franz Ferdinand; death of Johnny Cash.

My songs of the year were Maps by YYYs and Neko Case's stunning cover of C. Irwin's Hex.

best song is "ginger snaps (and sugar winks)" by britta philips and dean wareham. i have no idea when it was released but its DElightFUL.

best gig was Pedro the Lion

worst song is "i'm a redneck woman" by gretchen wilson.

Only gig was a free Jimmy Eat World concert on campus. It was free for a reason (all their songs virulently blow except for 'sweetness')

Best music: It's a toss up between Interpol's 'Slow Hands', Modest Mouse's 'The Ocean Breathes Salty' and Bjork's 'Triumph of the Heart'

Worst Music: Ashlee Simpson and her big fat nose

The only good songs that came out this year were by the Cure. Everything else - especially that on top 40 radio - was total rubbish. C'mon, how many musical geniuses did it take to come up with "baby mama"? And, can't most people realize that Hilliary Duff, Britney Spears, and Ashlee Simpson have their vocals augmented so much by software that they're almost unrecognizeable? And, tonight I was sitting in the local pizza joint, and the top 40 radio was playing a song that sounded like it was by one of those 20 pop-punk bands that all sound the same. When did rock lyrics start becoming so trite? It makes some mediocre New Order songs seem poetic.

Albums - Lost In Translation "Original Soundtrack", Mylo "Destroy Rock n' Roll", The Delgados "Universal Audio".

Gigs - Only been to two ; Delgados at the Barras, Ash at the Academy. Both storming.

Album - The Killers - Hot Fuss Singles - Killers - Mr Brightside, Snow Patrol - Run, Kasabian - Processed Beats, Razorlight - Rip It Up. Gigs - Shugs Manchester Tribute Night.:D

If I tried to list everything I hated this year I'd be here all day; besides, I'm not in the mood for negativity right now. So let's just concentrate on the great and the good:

Albums Kasabian - s/t Young Heart Attack - Mouthful of Love Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell New Order - In Session The Rain Band - s/t (BTW, in case anyone's going to say "but that one came out last year", I only got it last Christmas and I've kept coming back to it this year, so it's going in my list)

Singles/Tunes Kasabian - Club Foot Young Heart Attack - Misty Rowe Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out Michael Gray - The Weekend (the original, not the horrible radio mix with the extra vocals added on) The Rain Band - Easy Rider

Gigs BRMC - Mandela Hall, Belfast, 12th May Snow Patrol - Ulster Hall, also Belfast, 22nd November

Annie 'Chewing Gum' was great,as was The Streets return. Air`s 'Talkie Walkie' was also good.

I didn't really listen to that much NEW music this year.

Best album: the new M83 album, Before the Dawn Heals Us, which isn't actually released yet. The Cure's new album wasn't awful (like Wild Mood Swings), just mediocre.

Best song: "Going Nowhere" by The Cure (pretty apt title)

Best gig: a special 3-hour show by The Cure certainly made my year. I doubt I'll ever see that again. Easily in my top 3 gigs ever. Pixies were a bit of a letdown after that (saw 'em the same week), but were fantastic as well.

Super Furry Animals put out their Best Of album,which for a change is actually filler free! A 10/10,compilation of the year?

The RASMUS?

For the first time in the best part of a decade, there has been a large amount of quality. Tunes if the year: First of the Gang to Die, along with the other moz singles. Somebody told me by the Killers, Slow Hands by Interpol, Matinee by franz, Taking off by the C**e, as well as a few others. Mozzer gets album of the year in my book, no surprise there, the C**e, Franz, Libs, Interpol, Killers, Ordinary Boys have done it for me.

Been a storming year for gigs, Mozzer six times, as well as this tuesday in Brum and sat at earls court. Only his glasto set didnt do it for me. Macca at Glasto was obviously amazing (and if anyone has a copy, DVD or Cd, and wants to do one for me, give me a shout) Muse, British Sea Power, and a specila mention to the Doves and ACR at the Rob Gretton night.

I'm going to see Morrissey playing at Earls Court on Saturday as well. I'm in London this weekend and managed to get a standing ticket. Really looking forward to it, he was great here in Newcastle :)

best albums : bark psychosis - codename dustsucker juniorboys - last exit the blue nile - high

The lost in translation soundtrack was brilliant. Seeing Kraftwerk (twice) was a highlight. Another great soundtrack, not new but one I discovered this year was that of "chinatown" by polanski. fantastic film too.

Erland Oyes dj kicks was a great little collection, as was marshall jeffersons chicago cd mix. I love the new soulwax single.

I managed to avoid most of the things I hate this year......erm.... excluding morrisey. what a pillock. the new U2 album sucks as much as the last 50 did too, and god knows theres no escaping bonos self importance (not round these parts anyhow)

Film of the year has to be "la mala education" a classic, even by almodovars standards.

ah, clockwork c i totally forgot about the lost in translation soundtrack. one of the best! and it flows from one track to the next so well.

album: i hate to say it, but i think the only 'new' albums i bought in 2004 were the beastie boys and UNKLE. UNKLE trumps beastie boys, but that's hardly enough to give it 'best' status!

That's about it. I think I picked up the new RAMMSTEIN cd in there somewhere but I havnae had a chance to lissy to it yet.

Has to be said that Muse last night was amazing. What wasnt so amazing was how cold in was while i was looking for a taxi at 5am this morning. Morrissey was also outstanding on saturday night.

Erlend Oye 'DJ Kicks' was a fantastic release,which seemed to pass by virtually un-noticed. The fact that everyone i played it to either bought it or wanted a copy shows the quality!

Aside from Morrissey and the Cure, the Pet Shop Boys' two singles from PopArt "Flamboyant" and "Miracles" were also ace tunes. Seems like a return to form, I hope. Now, if their next album sounds like that, and with less guitars, I will be happy.

Doubt we`ll get so many decent debut albums in 05.

Erm... i knew Snow Patrol before this year. I still fail to see exactly what the fuss is about snow patrol. Spitting Games is *alright* but what else?

2005 does have a lot to live up to, i'll agree with that.

Best of 2004 gigs: the final appraisal for me. Morrissey @ MEN, Move, Preston, Leeds and Earls Court all stand out. Macca at Glasto. Muse @ Earls Court.

Baldrick, i take yer point about Ian Brown. I was there, first night at the Apollo when Mani and Noel Gallagher came out. Storming night. Classic tunes all night. Saw the Scissor Sisters three times this year. Both sets at glastonbury, first set when it was PISSING down was fun, and the set in the dance tent was enjoyable, but a bit of a comedown after an incredible set from british sea power. Saw the Scissor Sisters in the Apollo which was a great gig.

Wouldnt mind going to V stafford myself. Its not that far away, and the line up is more suited to my tastes than Leeds/Reading. the thing is have though is the idea of a music festival named after Virgin. Could just be one big expensive Virgin advertisement. anyway, I'll see how the line up goes.
