This is the new gadget cellphone for the new year... approuved by the US FTC, this phone can actually switch from a WIFI connection to GSM connection when not available.

This means, when at home, it will use your wireless router internet connection, and outside, it'll be on GSM...

I already switched to VoIP telephony this year, and what can I say... I can actually call anywhere in North America for free, so they can call me for free! for cheaper than the usual phone company.

You have to love technology when it breaks the walls for you, isn't it?

Being in the business, it's my prediction that all phone-calls will end up being VoIP in a couple of years (that is, doing your voice conversation over the data network in UMTS or cdma2000).

Keep in mind though that the problem is to "hand over" an existing conversation between WiFi and GSM - something they say can't be done unless you have a PBX at home... It will also be interesting to see how they solved the "keep your phonenumber while served by WiFi"-problem unless there is some information-exchange with your GSM operator.

Drawbacks with VoIP: 1) Quality depends on available bandwidth. 2) If the power goes, so does your calling ability - not good in an emergency situation...
