Most Overrated Album of All Time?

I'm on a roll with all these over/under-rated threads, I might as well apply them to overrated albums. Even good artists turn out a crap piece of filth which nonetheless sells mucho grande.

My pick would be the ultimate overrated album: Sgt. Pepper. I've listened to it all of 200 times, and I've never really seen the "concept" behind this supposedly "concept album". It's a *good* album, but I think there are at least five other Beatles albums I'd rank above that. I just get sick of people (rock critics mostly) claiming it's "the best album ever!!!!!!!!"

I'm gonna say "Nevermind" by Nirvana is horribly over-rated. It's got four, maybe five decent songs, but the last half of the album is crap.

(just waiting for the latent Nirvana-fan contingent of NOOL to come out and berate me for daring to say that a Nirvana album is over-rated )

any album by radiohead. I thought i like KID A but upon further review i changed my mind. It must of been the absyinthe the first time i listen to it.

KID A lacks warmth and try dancing to that one.

Also, never understood the fuss regarding sonic youth and nirvana.

By the way I think Nevermind is a superb album without a duff track on it.

Nirvana are probably the most overrated band in history. It sounds cruel, and it is, but in terms of music, the best thing to ever happen to Dave Grohl was Kurt Cobain committing suicide.

Maybe in terms of money, but i think his work after nirvana is shit.

when i heard that Cobain killed himself i though "Fuck! this no talent is going to have legendary status now" and its true nirvana always sucked and whats worse it brough attention and huge fame to his wife who sucks 10 times worse than he did, he seemed like a nice guy though im only talking about his music

Is it eck? The Foos 2nd, 3rd and 4th album are all great. Great songs to sing along and get pissed to. Better than anything that idiot cobain ever came up with.

That was me, not eckoh. Yeah, it always seem generic,and bland to me. Like boring 90's alternative rock, too american for my liking. Lemonheads were a template to them, and much better.

Having seen both bands my personal opinion is that Nirvana piss all over the Foo Fighters...if you're talking songs to sing along to then Nirvana had them by the bucketload - the crowd at Reading in '92 thought so too.

Personally I can't agree with some of the sentiments on here that Cobain was a talentless gimp. Sure, he was fast running out of songs, as his output showed, but some of those he did write on Nevermind and even In Utero were good. Yes, his death has raised his status as a cult hero and legend, but that always happens. It ain't served New Order too bad either, they have got wawy with being maddeningly inconsistent for a whole career because of the past!

Back to the topic....

I hate to say it because I'm a PF fan, but "Wish You Were Here" is a mess. The three songs in the middle (Have a Cigar, Welcome to The Machine, the title track) are some of the best ever commited to vinyl. But the goddam long-ass beginning and ending theme make me glad punk wasn't far off.

I resented Nirvana's popularity at the time because I wanted the dance-y manchester stuff like new order, 808 state, stone roses to be the Next Big Thing and the whole grunge thing seemed like a step backwards to me.

But i had to eventually give in to Nirvana and admit that their music was amazing. They spawned an avalanch of mediocre copycat shit that still plagues the airwaves to this day. I can list off about 6 bands off the top of my head who seem like they're trying to sound just like Nirvana.

OK Computer and Dark Side of the Moon come to mind.

I like NOOL threads that aim to bring hatred in our souls :D

Ok Computer simply because it suddenly became an album you 'had' to like. I thought it was moaning pish the first time I heard it and still do.

Like going to Glastonbury. I remember the days when you could turn up on the day and get in as there were still tickets. Now it is all sold out within hours.
