of places I've been Macchu Picchu in Peru holds a special feeling... read a book about Bingham discovering it in 1910...the lost Inca City..but I still cant spell it.

Iguassu Falls on the Brazil/Argie border is a wonderful place on Earth.

Oh, and Tallin in Estonia holds the most beautiful women on the planet....trust me

Who doesn't? Now the expense of traveling, that's another thing...

living in europe helped with the cost. also, i usually travel alone, take public intercity transport and stay in hostels. if you're traveling to someplace like nicaragua, the only real cost is the airfare. same with morocco, jordan and egypt if you're living in europe.

I helps living at the arse end of the world. If you have travel 24 hours to get somewhere it doesn't really matter where you go.

Plus Australians don't mind long trips. They don't think twice about jumping in their car and travelling for 1000km 2 days in a row, or even non-stop. I remember a couple of 16 + hour car trips to Brisbane or the Gold Coast. So Aussies are used to long trips from a very early age.

I think it's partly to do with the fact that we have to travel so far to get to EU that we probably figure that once we get there, we need to make the most of it. Plus EU is so far removed from us, it still has this exciting and historical appeal. And now more Aussies have also embraced travel to Asia, it opens up a vast map of exotic and cheap destinations in our region.

It's different for the British for instance, they're surrounded by Europe, it's too familiar to them and many probably figure that they'll get there someday as it's on their doorstep. That's why many of them now seem to do trips down through Asia, seeking different cultures.

The travel culture in the US is different for various reasons. Many seem happy just to explore the vast but safer world residing within their borders.
