My last uear of high school i listened to nothing but REM, Automatic For the People, Up (which was relased halfway through my 5th year), Green and Document.

and of course Substance.

my word agent. that is an impressive list.

for me it is nothing quite so specific. I can just put on any 80s compiation and i'm there. sountracks like pretty in in pink and the wedding singer are also good.

then there' of course New Order the smiths siouxsie and the banshees etc

Strangely enough, this pair circa 1981 -1982

Eventhough I was in high school from 1998 to 2002, most of the music I listened to wasn't released then. Smashing Pumpkins - most of their output, but especially Machina 1 and 2. I remember when a friend and I were 16 and went to meet SP at a signing. A local radio station had Machina 1 playing. A friend and I also skipped school to see them live. Then a few months later, a friend from school made me a copy of the Machina 2 album and I copied it and other SP bootlegs onto tape and spread them around before Napster became popular. The Cure - Bloodflowers, Disintegration, Show, Pornography. I really got into the Cure in high school and would often listen to them when I had a bad day at school, which was quite often. New Order - Crystal, Perfect Kiss, Round and Round, BLT. A guy and I did service learning together and in the office we worked in, we'd play music. He'd play some metal other than Metallica for me to listen to and I'd play him some NO. He seemed to get into the basslines. Three doors Down - Kryptonite. It's a crap song, but a girl I liked and I cut school once and went to the record store near our school. This song was playing in there as she looked for their album. Nelly, Hot in Herre, anything by Eminem,and Sisqo - The thong song. I just have bad memories of these over played songs.

80-85

Plus I was into the Beatles, Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Jones. Only in my last high school year I discovered the Velvet Underground (they trasmitted on the radio the entire 1966 album and I taped it); then I heard the Sex Pistols (it was a total music shock to me) and Nick Cave, then Billy Brag and finally I bought a Joy Division LP, without even having heard of that band before. A woman who sold the LP (Closer) on the street told me there was a guy from the Doors on that record and that was the only reason I bought it. :)

thanks melly. yes and being a new order fans makes us infinitely better in the eyes of the female noolers. for one you don't have to explain who this quaint english band is, with which you seem to have some sort of strange obsession.

I only was listening uk radio and watching english channel's like super channel and sky channel ! I discovered many bands from there, I was watching every day a show called "the Nino Firetto show" (if my memory isn't poor) ! Iloved New Order of course but many english pop songs, I rememberd bands like "fairground attraction" or "deacon blue" ! I met Ricky few years ago now, nice personn ! And I discovered the amazing band of New Order with Bizarre Love triangle in a dance club there I spent a lot of time every week-end !

this happened during my sophomore year at university. only instead of running out to a soundgarden show i went to the vault, the S&M club featured in madonna's 'sex' book. i was there purely out of curiosity, however. both times. ;)

Age is 14-17 (approximately), years in school are 9th through 12th. I think the German equivalent of high school is gymnasium, or whatever you call it.

Now that I think about it, when I bought my first car (in 1973), I installed an 8 track tape deck in it. You ever see one of those? A tape cartridge with 4 "sides." When you get to the end of track one, it switches to track two, even in the middle of a song, if the song extends beyond track one. So you're listening to some 11 minute guitar solo on track one (pre-punk era, after all), and at 8 minutes thirty seconds, the 8 track runs out of tape, so the song stops, the machine switches to track two, and the song picks up again where it left off. All very high tech, I can assure you.

Same from track two to track three, and track three to track four. It didn't always cut off songs-- only if the song extended beyond the length of the tape on that track.

Anyway, the 8 track was eventually replaced by the very high tech cassette tape.

In most(not all, private systems and different states have seperate systems) American terms, high school is your period in school from the 9th to 12th year up to graduation from the primary system.

Incidentally, during graduation practice, music was required and someone elected a copy of Violator. What a lark. I forgot what they played at the actual ceremony, but I have a feeling it was Don't You Forget About Me.

Hannett, don't forget Linkin Park. I'm in the same boat as you. Except that I wansn't a NO fan at the time. I was into Nirvana, Green Day, Weezer, and some other alt. rock bands. Boy, did I have taste.

Republic came out the summer between my junior and senior year. Everytime I hear the album it reminds me of that time. . .on top of the world, had a sweet 62 Merc to drive around as I wished, a good looking girlfriend, surfed all day and spent good time with friends. Thought those days would never end. That was one hell of a summer.
