culling foxes poll

In the paper a couple of days ago was that photo of a pile of dead foxes, shot because they were damaging a golf course. I have no view on fox hunting, any fox with any sense should move to the city like all civilised folk, if they choose to stay with the hicks they deserve all they get. But leave our urban foxes alone. They keep the rat population down and do no harm. And culling them for the benefit of golfers is doubly annoying. Golf courses are a scourge, using up precious water, suburbanising the countryside, wasting land that could be used for something worthwhile like housing. And what a sorry excuse for a sport. Worst of all are those American golfers, imported here driving our native golfers to extinction, digging up plants, gnawing through tree bark killing the trees...hang on, maybe that's squirrels? Well they're all the same, cull the the lot of them.

Once had a "horsey" mate of mine tell me fox hunting was a more efficient way of controlling their numbers than a man with a rifle. I even explained what efficiency meant, and did some pretty broadly guessed calculations which worked out in the favour of "chap with gun" using less energy per foxy corpse by a couple of orders of magnitude. Still she insisted on her way being far more efficient, whatever anyone's personal views on that issue, you gotta admit this shows a poor understanding of even primary school science seems to go hand in hand with enjoying small furry beasties tearing each other apart.
