Looking to make a cd of some of the best basslines around with an aim to learn them all. Any suggestions? It can be a riff or a solo, anything, not just the whole song.
This is open to everyone, not just bass players. As long as it sounds good, put it down. Don't really want a load of uber-technical jazz musicians or what have you...

MAXWELL MURDER by RANCID. Amazing bassline all the way through, then the BEST solo I've EVER heard on a bass, check it out seriously.
Definitely one of the great bass lines is White Line, by Grand Master Flash - the bit that starts th song out.
Lots of ones from Hooky - Perfect Kiss, especially the extended one from Substance. Confusion too.
nothing beats the bassline and bass solo from maxwell murder by rancid, i'm tellin ya.

JEff Wayne: The artilleryman and the fighting machine...same bassline but it goes more places, FANTASTIC drumming too, and it'll make anyone who hears it want to hear the whole album.
I note a lack of Rush getting mentioned...and I thought about it, and despite Mr Lee being kick ass good, and despite me having heard a fair bit of Rush, I can't think of a single kick ass bassline.
Also, apart from a couple of the Orb tracks I mentioned, no one has namechecked Jah Wobble, there's A LOT to be learned about grooving from studying Jah.
Oh and if we're allowing electronic basslines...

I'm wondering if he the first note is an open A or on the E string... stupid little things like that make me obsessed about getting it spot on with how the bassist himself plays it.
Interesting to see Hooky's line for LWTUA at #7 on that list. Sure to provoke some arguments.

one of the best basslines i've heard comes from metallica's cliff burton. 'orion' is over 8 minutes long. about half way through is this bassline that just friggin slowly tears your crib apart!!!

It aint THAt bad....but, there's so much clavinet stuff behind half his basslines it annoyed me and I went off them VERY fast.
And that's not the issue anyway.....it's the fact he's the anti-hooky :D

I'll admit that Level 42 song has a pretty good bassline.
And definitely find "Beat Connection" (and maybe "Yeah") by LCD Soundsystem. Also try "Hello Is This Thing On?" by !!!.
I always liked Flea on "Give It Away" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

And how shite are we all...well said that man above...RIO.....fuckin hell what a bassline. they may have been a slimey pop band but they were as tight as any band who ever played.
And I feel a little guilty remembering "Silly Love Songs" by Paul McCartney, but that just came to mind, and that's a very good line.

I'm not a big fan of Rush but YYZ is a great instrumental track. Worth checking out. Yes are ok, but I need to hear more stuff.

Unless you've heard them play it live, all you have heard is a fairlight...no bass on the record I'm afraid. A shame cos O'toole is a funky fucker.

If that bassline on the Frankie Goes To Hollywood cover War was a fairlight, I'm guessing the superb bassline intro on The Murder Of Love (the second track from the immensely euphoric 1985 Propaganda album A Secret Wish) was something synthetic too.
But well worth noting.

Fraid so :( Probably the self same fairlight since twas the same production crew by and large.
Having heard both tracks live (war in the flesh and MOL on mp3), both Mark O'toole and Derek Forbes kicked the piss out of the synthetic versions. To be perfectly honest I cannot 100% say it's a fairlight, it COULD be a synclavier as well, but lesser samplers of the era like Emulators are unlikely. The bassline on propaganda's Frozen faces 12" that i mentioned still has me beffled, the actual sound is very synthetic, but thephrasing sounds impossible to achive on a keyboard.....it could be a roland synth bass but I doubt it.
The dead giveaway of any sample/synth bass sound (in the case of the slap bass we're talking about it is probaly a synthetically adjusted sample), is that every note has exactly the same attack, no real bass sounds like that, no two notes in a row are absolutely identical. I do not think there is ANY real bass on Pleasuredome...tho at the time I believed it all :D If you ever hear the original FGTH demo of Two tribes, you will har how good Mark really was....you know the little xylophone/vibe happy melody thing in the background when and after Holly sings "listen to the voice sing"?...that was originally played on the bass, and FUCKING GROOVY it was too.
