Which album do you find the darkest lyrically and atmospherically?

This Mortal Coil - "It'll End In Tears" for me

A lyric from Fond Affections

"Now the winter's drawing close The days are getting older I can tell by your face that your heart is getting colder"

and there's plenty more of that on there

It's a toss up between 'Garlands' by the Cocteau Twins or Unknown Pleasures.

It's an excellent album, although nothing like Depeche. At least over here, though, it's very difficult to find Recoil. In Boston, I found it in a goth/industrial section in a used record store called In Your Ear, but in Philly, even at a record store that sells exclusively goth/industrial/synthpop/any band with a synth in it records, I found none on several occasions.

If I have to go with the album which is almost too depressing to bear, it'd be Dead Can Dance's Serpent's Egg. But I have a lot of dark music, so trying to win one over the other is just a bit tough.

One of the volumes of "selected ambient works II" by Aphex Twin (a pint to anyone who knows where to name comes from)...can;t remember which one tho. Also "I care because you do"....it's not just musically dark, it's engineered with genuine evil.....fucking test tones running through tracks and stuff....fucking maniac.

oh and Gorecki (SP?)'s third symphony....a cheery suite about the Warsaw ghetto, but it's interspersed with moments of genuine beauty.

EDIT: come to think of it, the darkest music I have is stuff I did myself. Stuff so sick it's not even on the webserver before any of you buggers start on me bandwidth again :D ( I know who you are....I have logs you know....na, the stuff's there for a reason ;) )

Hmm we are on a new order site and no one has mentioned NO's greatest album 'movement'. nothing is darker than dealing with the reality of your good friends suicide, and they did it in the studio (rip hannett)

other than that

closer holy bible pornography full collapse (thursday)

Right now, Closer. It's so dark, and haunting, my body temperature drops.
