i will be attempting to quit smoking. I figure i should go cold turkey because if their laying around, i will smoke them. Smoking in new york is almost as expensive as smoking the green unless i go to indian country. Its either quitting cigarettes or the other stuff. I don't want to the latter.

do you lot think cold turkey is the best way?

Stop smoking cigarettes, definatley.

Remove yourself from situations where other people are smoking. Like every doorway in Scotland, for example!

Not too long, just over a month. No urge to go back though. Bloody good job too, stamina is quite important for a lifeguard and smoking has brought mine down hugely. Its gonna take ages to get it back.

I hope this isnt a reference to me? I would never tell someone to quit, i merely have a very annoying friend who says he will quit every time he is knackered at the gym, but then is smoking the next day, so its started to annoy me when people say it and dont do it. though i did it a few times myself.

not a reference to you, just seems to happen all the time.

Fair enough. I never had a problem with smoking, just really needed to avoid the effects going any further.

Have friends strap you in a chair facing a powerpoint presentation. Eyelids open ala ClockWork Orange. Images of cancer victims, fouled lungs ect. Oh yes, heavy dose of LSD an hour before showtime.

I was never a heavy smoker. Mostly bars and driving home from work. I stopped buying and then stopped bumming. Try a Skoal Bandit between your toes--better than the patch.

what is a skoal bandit?

not exactly a glowing recommendation of going cold turkey.

but it is really. you see, think along Turn's- way. falling like the leaves. the days turned into months and years.. can't forget

like teaching an old dog new tricks. years - years ago he was an always smoker. quit. for years. & every so often he'll pick it again for a couple of weeks or so. the point was to maybe give it a go because stop. and the one-day-at-time rule/ trick / fun can become years.
smoke-free with $ and lungs saved for -- other things.::stephen:

that's gross

I'm sticking with the fags for now, I'm feared I'll take it out on the kids if I go cold turkey.

almost every year (around about this time of the year) I give up for 2 months, then start as soon as I go on a holiday or weekend away :\ohwell:

everyone hanging around doorways now because everywhere else is declared smoke free. go figure -even patios are declared smoke-free here. but it's the smoking habit that gets changed & somehow not the whole lifestyle. just the smoking part.

hey G. Rider - are you a 24 hour party person. strong, really strong tea is good for a change.

WARNING!!!! Cutting down your smoking or smoking lights are almost a sure way of increasing your smoking habit. For many years I tried all sorts of ways of quitting and lead up to me smoking two packs of reds a day.

I quit cold turkey, only way it works I think. The hard part is gettting a reason stronger than your addiction. For me it was when my son, 2 at the time, was pretending and playing that he was smoking. Put down the cig, and didn't pick one up again. The hardest is the first three days, everything else trails down from there and gets easier. Simply make it past three days. (If you are a heavy smoker, prepare everyone that you'll be a real asshole for a couple weeks).

I do pick up smoking again anytime I go on a deployment (because there's no alcohol or sex permitted and I need something). Quit everytime I come home. Found that the three day rule applies pretty much to any amount of cigarettes you are smoking.

Good Luck.

I'm surprised that no one said anything about patches or gum, but cold turkey is a good choice. I don't smoke, FYI.
