It's the equalisation curve which vinyl is mastered using, it rolls off MASSIVE amounts of bass ) up to 70dB at one point in the curve) in order to get the sound onto a mdeium as primitive as vinyl. A bit like MP3 compression, but a lot more low tech.
You therefor need a "Phono" or RIAA preamp to reproduce the information ont the record,. This is why record decks sound like pish on a platter when you plug them straight into a standard Aux in.

so what else can i do with my pre amp apart form playing records and getting the tv and /or dvd etc. to come through my stereo??

Agreed D13...but I DID pull all the above out of my ass, proving I really do know my shit.
You can also, by the look of the front panel J, toggel between a couple of decks, or one deck and some AUX ( line level) inputs as well.
EDIT: probably has a stage filter as well ( a 50Hz or so 24dB/+ve high pass filter to take out deck rumble and feedback)

It's got what a layman like me would call an earth lead that if you don't use creates feedback and rumble,yeah
Slightly different, that's a ground lead because the output of a magnetic picup is SO small, it gets swamped by the motor noise and airbourne radio frequency interference unless you carry the ground seperately from the signal, it's simmillar to a dipole aerial you would use for AM radio in that respect.
U can hear the RIAA preamp in action, just swap the deck and the dvd player ( and FFS turn your speakers RIGHT down), the deck will sound like it's overspill from someone's ipod on the train, and the DVD will sound like you have your head inside The Orb's bassbins.
