Cos of where Bangor is, they tend to run out of puff just as they get to us, which eally pisses me off. However we still get the odd top notch effort, and the odd ODD one too......Nov/dec 97 we had a system of storms settle in the irish sea for a whole weekend, it was REALY trippy, like something out of a whacky sci-fi show, we saw SO many strange things that weekend.

Dunno where to begin. a series of cloud to cloud bolts that started like, Way out in the Souteast and ran right up the irish sea, must have been 200 miles, about 8 actual discharges. We headed off to Portaferry, in the anus of nowhere, and found somewhere with NO light plution at all. There was lighting ALL over the Irish sea, and in the Mourne mountains to the south, but what ever way the atmospherics were, we heard not a PEEP of thunder. The air was CRYSTAL clear from all the storms that had passed over on the previous night, and we saw the aurora, low in the sky, not terribly active, but because of our angle on it, it looked like....errrrm like a drop hitting water veiwed from the side......sort of brighter at the edges, I suppose we were looking at a sort of auroral "halo" above the pole (we checked when we got back and there wasn't a cloud between us and the pole that night, but all other directions had storms on top of us).

We also THINK we seen a "sprite", the upward puff of plasma that goes up from a cloud as the lightning goes down.....they are not meant to be observable from the ground, but we saw something happen above a storm cloud a LONG way out to sea.

Richard and I started freaking out after a while because after 2 hours of standing round staring at all the bizarre shit in the sky, we realised neither of us had seen a satellite......too much sci fi had us thinking end of the world silliness.

(LOL....i just heard thunder outside  )

On the way home we seen a fireball too, not a meteor, a lump of something, a proper fireball, it went into the north atlantic if it made it down, this did not help.

I am sure I left something out but I am keen to post this before a strike fucks my power.
