X-Men 3 - The last stand

Watched it yesterday... Was not as great as part 2 (which I worship totally), but it was good. I don't think there will be a fourth one - too much losses - too much changes. Don't they think about a Magneto-Movie?

Wow! You've seen it already. I don't think it opens here till tomorrow. I am totally jacked about seeing it. I agree with you #2 was even better than #1. I don't like the way they screwed up several of the characters from the comics, sometimes uneccessarily (Hollywood boobs) butb the stories were very good and of course so were the special effects, and of course it was good to see my boyhood idols finally brought to the big screen. I also had heard that there won't be another X-Men movie but that there will be a Wolverine movie. I'd prefer another X-Men movie with a different mission rather than fighting the Brotherhood yet again. Not gonna happen, though. I too am curious about how much Phoenix there is, but I can wait till I go see it. So maybe I'd better stay away from this thread!

I worked on it. See the Angel? I made him fly, and I did some of the stuff with the golden gate bridge at the end. Took me about a month before I realised Vinnie Jones was in it, Vinnie Jones+Fat suit= Juggernaut. My mates were on set when he had to do his "Do you know who I am? Im the Juggernaut, bitch!" (pure poetry isnt it?) 94 takes apparently.

Very cool! I love the Juggernaut. I've only seen about 1.5 seconds of him from the commercial. Great line, too. Maybe I'll go as the Juggernaut this Halloween so I can use it.

My advice... It's worth to stay seated after the movie... There's a little scene after the credits...

I'm mega excited about this film ,i think it's possibly the only film i've wanted to see this year, although i worship the ground (Sir) Patrick Stewart, Ian Mckellen/ Magneto, is my favoutrite Actor/Character in the series he's class each time and his line delivery is always first class.

But there is a Wolvie flick in the works and probably more X-Movies, although they will probably be 'The New Mutants', and a whole new bunch of actors, rather than the original (even though they ain't the originals which was; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Ice Man) X-Team.

I hope the Wolverine-movie is not such a "Young Wolverine"-Prequel-sh** with an unknown actor , but one with Hugh Jackman

Well it's a nice "popcorn-movie" with amazing FX, and lovable characters... The bridge thing is a "great move" ;).

In the reviews I've read it's been "worst.movie.ever"

The local reviewer here gave it 2 1/2 stars out of 4 and called the storyline silly. But then again, he has given other movies 4 stars that I could not stand when I saw them. So I have learned to take his reviews with a grain of salt. Plus a movie based on a comicbook should be somewhat silly

Our local movie critic gave it a 5 out of 10, but I put absolutely no stock in his opinion. I've noticed that he generally doesn't give science fiction and action movies good reviews. And he closes up his review with this moronic question: One last question: Why do they call the good guys X-Men when half of them are women?

Yeah, comic book characters have more lives than a cat. After all, didn't Jean Grey "die" in the last movie. So I wouldn't get too bummed if Prof X or Maggy die in this one.

True, but my point is that people often "apparently" die then come back to life. They did at least give you a clue in X2. My wife, not being familiar with the comics, was rather distraught until I explained to her that I'm sure JG is still alive and will be around in the next movie.

I personally don't think they followed the comic very well in X-Men, but as you say, just go and try to enjoy it as a movie and try not to compare it too much to the comic. The idea of the X-Men fighting for the humans who hate them is the central theme and at least they didn't screw that up. While we're at it, what the heck was up with the Hulk movie?? Ang Lee is a good director, and did some clever things with the comic book panels, but I still don't quite know what happened at the end.

Oh no! In the comics, he was one of my favorites. He was so upbeat even though most "normal" people feared and despised him due to his appearance. I was hoping they'd "correct" his character in this movie.

Well got through seeing it tonight. I would rate it middle of the road. I won't give anything away, except that to me, being a comic collector, this movie was the furthest from the comic book compared to the other 2 movies.

That's not good. I've come to expect them to butcher the characters though. I'm going to see it next weekend, so I'll keep my expectation tempered.

Well I don't know the comics, but the film was OK to me... Perhaps a bit too much FX...

Got my arse in gear yesterday and travelled 250 miles round trip to go see it,

I enjoyed it, it wasn't X-men 2 but not bad, i liked the end bit after the credits,

Yeah the second is and stays the best...

I saw a trailer for Superman Returns too, it looks ok, i think it's gonna be another X-men 1, pretty slow build up for future films in the franchise

To get even MORE technical, JG was unknowingly Phoenix during X2, and becomes Dark Phoenix for X3

Didn't follow X-Men as a kid (a Batman guy myself), and not understanding the importance of the change. I did see the bird at the end of X2, but why is it important?

I did collect the comic as a kid and found the Phoenix thing a bit confusing at the time. Like many other things in the movie, they changed it a bit from the comics. In the comics, though this was not explained right away, Phoenix was actually an alien life force who took over Jean Grey's body and gave her those incredible powers, with the desctructive temper to match. Jean Grey apparently died in the comics but was resurrected by the Phoenix, I think at the moment of her apparent death. She was eventually killed, I think perhaps by Wolverine, as in the movie. However, my memory is a bit fuzzy plus I think she may have been resurrected after I stopped collecting. In the comics, often when Phoenix would fly around, and be about to kick some ass, you'd see the giant firebird in the sky behind her. It was her trademark, a bit like the Batman spotlight in the sky, to put it in terms you can relate too. :)
As you know from the movie, the Phoenix there is just the evil, powerful, multiple personality of Jean Grey. The firebird, unfortunately, did not manifest itself in X-Men 3. I don't know why they left that out. Then again, several other things about the movie left me wondering as well. I may have slightly butchered the Phoenix explanation, especially to a Phoenix purist, but hopefully you get the general idea.

Sometime later, after Xavier had recruited several new members for the X-Men, Grey and some of the other X-Men decided to leave the group in order to lead their own lives. Scott Summers, however, remained in the X-Men and he and Grey continued their romantic relationship. Shortly after she left the team, Grey and the then current members of the X-Men were kidnapped by Steven Lang's Sentinels and taken aboard Lang's space station. After defeating Lang the X-Men had to escape back to Earth aboard a space shuttle during a solar radiation storm. The craft's pilot had to sit in an area without enough shielding to protect him or her from the lethal radiation. Grey volunteered to be pilot, but while guiding the shuttle to Earth, the solar radiation finally proved to be too great for Grey to hold back any longer with her powers. She began to succumb to the radiation's lethal effects.

It was long believed that Grey had indeed died aboard the space shuttle but became linked with a primal energy force known as the "phoenix-force" which recreated and reentered her body, The vastly more powerful being took the code name Phoenix. Phoenix joined the X-Men, but Grey had not had the proper training for coping with such immense power. At first Grey's strong moral sense kept the phoenix force under control, and usually subconsciously prevented her from using her powers beyond a certain limit. But then Phoenix fell victim to psychic manipulation by Mastermind, who was attempting to prove his worthiness to become a member of the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club by mesmerizing Phoenix into becoming its new Black Queen. He psychically induced dark, repressed desires from within Grey's consciousness to come to the surface of Phoenix's mind, submerging Grey's true normal personality. Phoenix finally freed herself of Mastermind's control, but was unable to prevent the dark side of Grey's personality with the full power of the phoenix-force behind it, from overwhelming her, not having had the training necessary to repress it. Grey's true personality was submerged more fully than before, and Phoenix became the malevolent Dark Phoenix. After Dark Phoenix wreaked incredible devastation, Grey's true personality reasserted control of Phoenix once more, and, before Cyclops' horrified eyes, Phoenix committed suicide rather than revert to Dark Phoenix. Summers mourned Grey, and eventually married Madelyne Pryor, who greatly resembled her.

It was later revealed that Grey did not die, nor had she ever become Phoenix. The phoenix-force responded to Grey's anguish and telepathic calls for help as she was dying aboard the space shuttle, and appeared before her, shaping its form and consciousness after Grey's own. The phoenix-force told Grey that she was dying, but that by taking the phoenix-force's hands, Grey would gain her "heart's desire." What Grey most wanted was to save the lives of the X-Men and herself. She held onto the phoenix-force's arm and fell into a coma-like state. Simultaneously, the phoenix-force fully took on both the form and the memories and personality of Jean Grey. The phoenix-force used its powers to ensure the survival of the X-Men in their return to Earth and crash landing in Jamaica Bay off New York City. It was also responsible for casting Grey into a coma-like state and placing her within a pod like construction, which rested for years at the bottom of Jamaica Bay while Grey's injuries healed completely. Thus the phoenix-force fulfilled its pledge to Grey. The phoenix-force creature compelled itself to believe it was indeed Grey, whose personality it had assumed. Indeed, it had imitated Grey's consciousness so perfectly that not even Xavier realized the imposture. It has been theorized that it was the phoenix-entity's own power rebelling against the duplicate of Grey's personality it had given itself that caused it to become Dark Phoenix. When Phoenix committed suicide, it was acting exactly as Grey herself would have done under the circumstances, since it had endowed itself with an exact copy of Grey's personality.

Many months after Phoenix's death, the Avengers found Grey's pod beneath Jamaica Bay and brought it to the Fantastic Four for study. Grey released herself from the pod, at first unable to remember her encounter with the phoenix-force, but with the help of the Avengers and Fantastic Four, she recalled what had happened and learned what happened to Phoenix. As a result of her harrowing experiences, Grey had somehow lost her telepathic powers, but the strength of her telekinetic powers had greatly increased.

Hope this helps to explain the Phoenix character a little better.

any updates ? ! Solid action pap, great outfits and way too much money. Just read some of the obscene figures of $ that went into this and the Miami Vice sets. A good escape even if you go into the movie cold and clueless. Never read the comics and haven't seen any of the first lot. Still game to go.

You'd be well served to rent the first two on DVD fist, but you could probably watch the third one without that and still enjoy it. Just so long as you like action movies, they are enjoyable escapes. Nice to know millions of dollars are being spent wisely. :)

I'm not even that crazy about Superman. Most overrated superhero ever. Too powerful and too goody good. Superman vs. Lex Luthor? Yeah, that sounds exciting. And that kryptonie stuff is so lame. Lex pulls it out of his pocket whenever he's in a tight spot. Now, if Superman could fight someone as powerful or more powerful than him, it might be interesting... At least the $265M wasn't on Brandon Routh's salary.

Liked the movie a lot but I wasn't too happy that so many of the main characters got killed off. We didn't stay long enough to see the scene at the end of the credits: what happened in that?

Cheers. Have mainly followed the films through the written reviews and some can give such detail that watching it on screen is just to see how they pulled it all off. Good fun.

I love the characters who died, but the emotional impact was zero!

I really like X2, and I expected X3 to be just as good, but it wasn't. Too fast-paced.. you can't even breathe! It's like bam bam bam bam. I did like it, but I dunno, there was something missing. Maybe it was Nightcrawler - I liked him!!

I'll admit the only reason I watched the X-Men films was for this particular hottie::

Superman is hard!!! that's why's he's called the man of steel. his powers are better than anyones. err...see Superman 2 for ref. and btw!! those mutants aren't worth a carrot.

So, in Summary Superman IS THE BEST super-hero of all time. END OF!!! :p

I agree. The first main character that died, whom I liked a lot in the comics, I can't believe the way they did it. It was if he was some minor character. Maybe the director really hated that character or something. It was about the most anitclimactic death I've ever seen.
Hopefully the Wolvie movie will be better.

I like the Nightcrawler in the comics. They screwed up his character in X2, then didn't have him at all in X3, not even an explanation. Very disappointing, that.

I'll never complain about too much action, but it seems like they could have added some stuff to the movie to add some depth to the plot. Oh well.

Damn! I didn't stay until the credits finished either! I was tempted, but so much of the film was cackhanded that I thought there was no way that there would be an end of film clip...

at the end the nurse and patient who are in the video xavier is teaching about 'body jumping' are in the hospital room.

the 'brain-dead' patient wakes up and says 'hello moira' to the nurse in Xaviers voice and she says 'CHARLES' all shocked and then it cuts .

It made me a little happier i was stunned when they wiped xavier out.
