What is Love? Let's Have a Heated Debate

I heard something on the radio at the weekend that made me think. Someone suggested that the definition of love was that if you love someone, you don't want to change them. You love them just the way they are.

While it might not be the whole answer, it's certainly something to consider.

What do you think?

PS - £40 to the first person to spot the tenuous New Order reference in the subject of this thread!

As the great philosopher Howard Jones said...

What is lo-o-o-o-o-o-ove anyway? Does anybody love anybody anyway?

So there you have it, love doesn't exist.

Bit cynical Jem! Course it does:nod:

I know, you know,we believe in the land of love........

Do I win £40?

I'll take the equivalent in drugs:nod:

Auntie May, if I was going to quote New Order, I would at least do it correctly.

The reference is a lot more obscure that that. So obscure that perhaps only Rocket Mick will get it!

Better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all they say.....

Bollocks old saying I'd say....I lost the love of my life at 18 years old...Childhood sweethearts we were.It was in no way better than anything at all.Just gutting in everyway! Puppy love she called it..Which made it even worse:( It would have been better not to have loved and lost, and remained the ungutted, happy go lucky lad I was before her!

Mrs Merton (played by Caroline Aherne) had her own show, called the Mrs Merton Show. One of her catchphrases was 'Let's have a heated debate'. The house band was called Hooky and the Boys and featured Peter Hook, who she was married to at the time.

Now: when you love someone, you don't want to change them. Fair point?

And what about the other way around: if you don't want someone to change, does that mean you love them???

if you really love somebody, you rally care about them. making suggestions how they can improve themselves just shows how much they care. it can just get very annoying sometimes and result in nagging.

it is the same way with mothers and their kids. mums love their kids so much, they care about them and want them to better themselves. nobody is perfect.

if you don't care about somebody you let them be.

it is best of course to have a partner who is perfect. that will never happen. thus a few faults will just have to be accepted.

Good point, Ron.

There's a difference between wanting someone to change for selfish reasons and thinking that someone should change for their own good?

Is it possible to confuse the two?

indeed. if desired change is too much then the relationship is doomed and no amount of nagging will help.

the desired change should always be for the other person's good and not for selfish reasons, such as how good will he/she make me look with my friends if only he/she got a better job, got a bigger car etc.

Oh my god, with the cash saved I could afford an eight bed mansion with swimming pool, a personal trainer and a gaggle of male playmates.

My TV remote just gets too much useage!

If you have to ask the question of "what is love?" -- you've probably never experienced it.

Agree.

My point of veiw of marriage (in essance the defining moment of love) is that a good husband protects his wife from the "bad" parts of herself; a good wife protects her husband from the "bad" parts from himself.

Tabbsy, are you really fine. From the writings in the blogs it seems that you're hopelessly in love, but handling the wrong way. A few months ago, I have read (either in your blogs or BCD) that you have problems with your low self-esteem. Tabbsy, you are a grown man. Take a risk to find your soulmate. I'm glad I did. :thumb:
