My iPod Died Last Night

Ok, so it's about 2am and I get into bed, and decide I wanna listen to a live version of Black by Pearl Jam.

Select the song, get the first 20 seconds okay, then my iPod completely freezes up, and starts making these quite loud clicking noises, like you hear when an iPod is selecting a song, only louder and never ending.

Then cos it was doing all this clicking and whirring it started to get really hot, and I don't mean warm, it actually got REALLY hot, and this must have gone on for about 45 minutes so I was just waiting for it to melt really.

Anyway it finally stopped and cooled down. Now whenever I try and switch it on, I get the same clicking and whirring as last night for about 20 seconds then it comes up with a picture of an iPod with this face ---> :dead: on the screen. I think it's trying to tell me something.

So now until I get this fixed I have no iPod.

The site is saying I need to plug it into my computer and go to the updater and restore it to factory settings, then plug it into my itunes to get all my songs back on.

Problem is, when I plug it into the computer I get the same :dead: face on the screen and nothing happens, OR it says "Can't mount iPod." which made me laugh at first but is now annoying me.

I think its f***ed Jack..... You'd call it a hard drive crash on a pc, not sure what that is in Apple-ese. Time for a new one, hope its your birthday soon!

I hate ipods! For one thing I hate the way everyone talks as though Apple invented the hard drive mp3 player when they were around for years before Apple got in on the act. I hate the way most (all?) ipods use crappy built-in rechargable batteries instead of normal AAA/AA ones that allow you to carry a spare and change it yourself, and use cheap standard rechargables. And I reckon hard drive based players are bad technology anyway, cos they are too fragile, too prone to jog or die, and too power hungry. Still, sorry to hear of your loss :)

Time to invest in a Creative Zen, I think!

I reckon you probably should have shut it down at the first sign of trouble. But to be honest it was probably dead from the second it went click click click. As Mr Lea said...yer drive's popped it's clogs.

waranty time defo....and of course you have all your music on DVD or cd don;t you because you know about the 3 most important things you need to do with a computer....

Get it burned to a CD/DVD or two as well.

Better still make a 2nd copy on a fresh hard drive and leave it in a totally different house.

I aint kidding either, I recall reading an astonishingly wise statement "digital data does not actually exist until there are two copies in geographically distinct places" or something.

But I do back my computer system up a lot (system restore is WAY too flakey for me to trust) , and MOST of my mp3's are at least also on a DVDR somewhere.

Did you try restarting the ipod? Pressing and holding down the menu and center button, until it restarts? I had this happen to my ipod a year ago, restarted it and no issues ever since.

It shouldn't take long to get repaired. I sent my laptop back to Apple on a Monday and it was back home on Thursday.

I've tried and used others, but I have to say the ipod uses better software. If you are a super-organized person with 500+ albums, the ipod surpasses the competition. If the person throws music in by downloading it and doesn't super-organize it, I could see how they could be about equal. The ipod also has a wider variety of add-ons that the other simply can't compete with.

you need to spank your iPod. seriously. whack it pretty good on the bottom and it should unstick your HD. i've done this with several "dead" iPods adn they've all come back to life. good luck.

I had an iPod for two weeks. Two weeks. I had bought it to go jogging with. After about a week, it started lockig up on me. About another week later, it finally locked up for good. I returned it and have not bought another mp3 player since. iPods were supposed to be the shit as far as mp3 players go but I was rather disappointed in mine. It's not like I'm a spastic runner, wildly shaking my iPod all over the place as I run, either. Oh well, technology has yet to catch up to my demands.

Just got an MP3 player.Sony something or other.. Well chuffed,no batteries or F all.Charges direct from your computer in about 10 mins,and gives 28 hours continuous play.Comes in handy as a bastard for Mordor,when I'm doing a spot of crane driving

Been lugging an antiquated CD player round for years at work,going through batteries like no one's business! Probably pay for itself on what I'll save on duracells in about three months.RRR-sult!

28 hours. fuckinell. i remember when i'd get on a plane with my CD walkman, and before the journey ended the Duracell's had ran out. i never cottoned onto re-chargeables either. :\ohwell:

Apparantly up to 28 hours,aye,says on the tin.Hope so Batteries (2 of)I was lucky if they lasted 4 or 5 hours.

My Ipod was one of the originals. About 4 years old now I think.

It quite often starts clicking and whirring and locking up so you can't turn it off. It keeps going, getting hotter and hotter untill the battery dies after 8 hours or so.

Not sure how but it's always starting working again. :\ohwell:

no other portable mp3 player is better than the iPod/iTunes combo. for design, simplicity and interface, nothing beats it. all of these other systems fuck up too.

i've done this on 5 diff. iPods after resetting/restoring etc. many have been on their way to the scrap heap and now they work perfectly. please try this method and tell me if it works or not. i am fairly certain it will work.

It's just not having anything. I am gonna take it into the Apple store in the Trafford Centre, with proof of purchase. (I got it at Christmas, therefore it is under 12 months old and I get it done for free.)

plug iPod into computer, wait for sad face, smack the shit out of the bottom of the ipod (the chrome side) and wait. hasn't failed me yet. of course, your problem could be a diff. problem, probably not HD related.

good luck. i bought apple care and brought my iPod in 2.5 years after buying it and they gave me a new one. in and out in 15minutes. something shug could tell us a thing or two about.

And here's me with my 1 gig iRiver, still on the same rechargable battery as I put in 3 weeks ago. Admittedly, I wiped its lame interface and flashed it to being just a generic USB Drive.

I'm pretty behind the times for a music geek and gadget techie.

(I also still listen to cassettes, 8 tracks, and vinyl so it explains a lot.)

Nice one mate! Same happened to me a while back, but my iPod was 18 months old so the warranty didnt cover it Luckily i just had my student loan through so the financial damage wasn't too shocking. I was lost for the week or so i didnt have mine.

Speaking of i-Pods, on average, how many years or months is it before everyone's battery is dead? I got an i-Pod mini (I know, it's a bit old) last July, and the batteries are weak. I hook it up to the computer for a few hours, and yet it still says that the batteries are low or whatever. From what I hear, if you attempt to send it in to Apple for a "new" battery, they won't actually change the battery, but send you a refurbished one that's not yours! In other words, you won't get your actual i-Pod back. Do they think people are just going to buy new i-Pods every single year? Sure, ideally, I would like to, but as a student, it's financially hard to do so, and is Apple really that greedy? I want to keep my i-Pod at least until next year (my mum will sigh and shake her head if I say I want a new one now), and I'm trying not to use it as much, and I'm trying not to fumble around with the buttons so much, but still...

Bit irked that the mp3 player I'd actually want _still_ doesn't seem to exist.

Personally I _hate_ those devices that insist on using built-in rechargables. Firstly you can't carry spares and have to take the whole thing 'out of service' while you recharge it, and inevitably you forget and it runs out while you are out and you end up carrying a useless hunk of plastic around with you all day. And secondly they apparently die entirely after a while (quite a short while in the case of some ipods, I'm told).

But even those that are properly designed and take standard AA/AAA batts mostly have such rubbish battery life as to make them more trouble than they are worth (8 hours??? That's barely 2 days listening).

Power and fragility issues seem, in my opinion, to mean HD players aren't worth bothering with, but even most flash based ones have crap batt life - if Sony can do it with their NWE models why can't anyone else? Even Sony themselves now seem to have forgotten how they did it, reverting to rubbish built in batteries for the newer models.

Currently I'm reasonably happy with my Sony network thingy with its 50-70 hour AAA batt life, but 1Gb is looking a bit small and the 2G models don't take standard batts. Also there are no SD card (£25 for 2G) using players with decent battery life.

Wake me up when there's a 4Gb+ solid state or SD-card using player that takes AAAs and gives 50 hours or so batt life!

If it included a radio permanently tuned to Radio Four that'd be nice also (especially if it automatically switched itself off when the Archers came on).

My second iPod (20GB, think it was 3rd generation? Not too sure..) lasted quite a while, over 18 months. never seemed to have a problem with the battery life, it was the the harddrive that fucked up. My current iPod is one of the video ones, the battery always seems to go down faster, but it'll just stay on red for aggges before it runs out, specially if i have the backlight off

I have a Gen 4 (an older, black and white non photo one) iPod, 20 gb, that I got christmas '04 and it still runs pretty well. Battery life is a shorter, but nothing that bad.

I'm really satisfied with my iPod.
