Just got an MP3 player.Sony something or other..
Well chuffed,no batteries or F all.Charges direct from your computer in about 10 mins,and gives 28 hours continuous play.Comes in handy as a bastard for Mordor,when I'm doing a spot of crane driving
Been lugging an antiquated CD player round for years at work,going through batteries like no one's business!
Probably pay for itself on what I'll save on duracells in about three months.RRR-sult!

28 hours. fuckinell. i remember when i'd get on a plane with my CD walkman, and before the journey ended the Duracell's had ran out. i never cottoned onto re-chargeables either. :\ohwell:

Batteries (2 of)I was lucky if they lasted 4 or 5 hours.

My Ipod was one of the originals. About 4 years old now I think.
It quite often starts clicking and whirring and locking up so you can't turn it off. It keeps going, getting hotter and hotter untill the battery dies after 8 hours or so.
Not sure how but it's always starting working again. :\ohwell:
no other portable mp3 player is better than the iPod/iTunes combo. for design, simplicity and interface, nothing beats it. all of these other systems fuck up too.
i was serious about spanking your iPod. it works, trust me.
i've done this on 5 diff. iPods after resetting/restoring etc. many have been on their way to the scrap heap and now they work perfectly. please try this method and tell me if it works or not. i am fairly certain it will work.
next time i see Eddie Vedder at the grocery store, i'll tell him he broke your portable player!

It's just not having anything. I am gonna take it into the Apple store in the Trafford Centre, with proof of purchase. (I got it at Christmas, therefore it is under 12 months old and I get it done for free.)
HOPEFULLY they will just swap it on the spot, like they did to a fellow NOOLer.
plug iPod into computer, wait for sad face, smack the shit out of the bottom of the ipod (the chrome side) and wait. hasn't failed me yet. of course, your problem could be a diff. problem, probably not HD related.
good luck. i bought apple care and brought my iPod in 2.5 years after buying it and they gave me a new one. in and out in 15minutes. something shug could tell us a thing or two about.

Could be worse. My little brother had his 40 GB ipod stolen from his work on the same day Jack's unit fried itself. Of course, he shouldn't have left it out of his sight, seeing as how trendy the little fuckers are.
I've got a 3rd generation 40gb iPod and have had nothing but reliability from it over the last 2 years. As Biznotic correctly pointed out, the simplicity of the Apple interface and software is second to none. I think if you end up with a :dead: icon on the screen it basically means the disk is fcuked and actually physically damaged which also (obviously) means dead iPod.
If it's within the warranty I'm sure you're totally covered Jack. Once you get it back (fixed) you should get yourself a new battery for it as well. Depending on which model you have you can buy batteries with twice the capacity (I did so for mine) so you don't have to charge up so often; very handy! Piece of piss to install too and you get easy peasy instructions on how to take your iPod apart.
This site IpodUpgrade.net is very good for that sort of thing.

And here's me with my 1 gig iRiver, still on the same rechargable battery as I put in 3 weeks ago. Admittedly, I wiped its lame interface and flashed it to being just a generic USB Drive.
I'm pretty behind the times for a music geek and gadget techie.
(I also still listen to cassettes, 8 tracks, and vinyl so it explains a lot.)
