Anyone familiar with their music? I love the song "Such Great Heights" but don't really know anything else by them. Does anyone know if Give Up, or anything else by them, is worth buying?

They are fcuking mint as Jack would say! ![]()
First heard Such Great Heights on a compilation in late 2002 but didn't pick up the album "Give Up" until almost 2 years later. Since then I've mopped up the CD singles on import at indie record shops; they've got some interesting remixes/b sides on them but are mostly non-essential listening.
To me The Postal Service do quality electronic music but differently to the likes of Ladytron and Goldfrapp because they try to retain a human quality amongst the beats. Some of the drum machine patterns and sound effects they use are almost shambolic and the guy's voice is as far from "cold" as you could get.
My favourite tracks would be basically the first half of Give Up especially SGH and Recycled Air. The second half is still good but the quality falters a bit towards the end.
Hot Chip are basically the UK's answer to The Postal Service.

I liked Give Up alot, and think it is well worth picking up. I think such great heights is only about the third best song on the album--I liked We Will Become Silhouettes and "the district sleeps alone tonight" more. Overall, I think it is one of the best albums to come out in the last few years.
The album spent a fair amount of time at the top of the Billboard dance/electronic chart didn't it?

postalservicmusic.net. Excellent stuff.
When I was in Spain in January, one of the girls withus had a few CD's she'd burned and one included Such Great Heights
Top tune so when I saw the album for £6 in HMV I picked bought it. Maybe I should give it a couple of more plays but I thought it was rubbish :\ohwell:
And I still can't work out who they ripped off for Such Great Heights

Hey Dave, you get those discs I sent ok? :p
Meh, the girlfriend likes 'em, but she likes that bunch of Death Cab sissies (who have that one really good song) who I should probably like because they're from Bellingham, one of my adopted homes, and started the group at my old uni. But then again, that acoustic indie rock is so fucking bland!
strange thing, i like the postal service---but i think death cab for cute are complete shite.
Both Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie are very cool bands. I need to have some indie music CDs to diversify my collection.
My daughter loves The Postal Service. She says she likes "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight", "Brand New Colony" and "Natural Anthem". When I first heard Natural Anthem the music freaked me out - sounded like the aliens were landing ![]()

Death Cab For Cutie & Postal Service are same band/group. They're definitely a must have, and are great INDIE groupies. ![]()

um, you're a bit off base here. Death Cab for Cutie is an 4-piece indie pop band. The Postal Service is the electronic side project involving the vocalist from Death Cab and the main guy from Figurine/DNTEL, along with other guest vocalists like Jen Wood, and Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley. The Postal Service is vastly different in sound and aesthetic (with only Ben Gibbard's plaintive vocals providing the common thread between the two groups).
I generally prefer Death Cab for Cutie's music, as it has more depth and stands up to repeated listening. There are a few good tracks on "Give Up", but as a whole The Postal Service's pleasant electronic pop is too lightweight and throwaway for my tastes.
also, the lyrics to Track 8 on Give Up ("This Place is a Prison") is written about a hipster bar in Seattle called the Cha-Cha Lounge:
"This place is a prison And these people aren't your friends Inhaling thrills through $20 bills And the tumblers are drained And then flooded again and again
There are guards at the on-ramps Armed to the teeth And you may case the grounds From the Cascades to Puget Sound But you are not permitted to leave
I know there's a big world out there Like the one I saw on the screen In my living room late last night It was almost too bright to see
And I know that it's not a party If it happens every night Pretending there's glamour and candelabra When you're drinking by candlelight
What does it take to get a drink in this place? What does it take, how long must I wait?"
Someone lent me GIVE UP about a year ago,and I absolutely love it.Think of PREFAB SPROUT with MERCURY REV vocals, and possibly a bit of OMD thrown in,and VOILA!

I thought at first this thread was going to be ripping into ROYAL MAIL.For the non-UK residents, you post something in the UK,the price is based on SIZE and WEIGHT now.I've been off the past fortnight,so I've missed the madness. I can half imagine when I get back to work, they'll be hundreds of people struggling to cram their parcels through the smaller slot, saying "I'LL MAKE IT GO CHEAPER!" Give it a kick.

I thought so too, I think they only changed it to give the old biddys in the queue something new to moan about![]()
considering getting my nipple done, have been thinking about it for awhile now.
Edit: Sorry to hijack your thread Shellshocker
I tried a few Postal Service tracks and wasn't very impressed. They're a bit too lightweight for me. Although I do love the Persistent Beat remix of "District."
Thanks for bringing the song "Such Great Heights" to my attention Shellshocker
Never heard it previously, have now..Tis beaut!
Gunna take a closer look at The Postal Service,if this song is owt to go by
Cheers.
"Give Up" is a good lil record-good lyrics-just seems a bit different from a lot that is out there...
It's been in my playlist lately balancing
"Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegtables" Dead Kennedys "New Day Rising" Husker Du

Christy, I just sent you an-email on the subject but it came back as a delivery failure. I used the address on your pro-file.
