Delete the old ones first.
As for conversion ( what was it again, wma to mp3?) a quick googling for "freeware audio convertor" should do the trick. I may even have something at home I can mail you.

i've found a few online, but i'm not sure how to get the songs back onto my iRiver. windows media player, i presume?
Nope, same way you got them off it, just trail them accross to the "drive" it appears as.
Note on mp3 bitrates......
Don't bother setting the output bitrate in any convertor to higher than the source's bitrate was, it's a waste of disc space. 128 is acceptable, 160 is better, 192 is good, 320 is daft beyond compare unless you are converting from waves.

Hopefully you just treat them like any other file, select 'em on the iriver and delete them. Then you can either slide the new ones on that way, or do them with riviera.
A simple rule is....if it CAN be done with the standard windows tools, do it that way.
If it connects as a USB drive, then really all normal file operations should be possible on it's contents. The only potential hiccup on that would be if riviera encrypted them as it transferred them, but as well as being annoying and nasty that would be pointless.
BTW, for things like this,THIS is very useful as it has 2 panes open at all times, you can have the iriver in one and (for example) D:\savemytunesass\ in the other. It's a program I simply cannot do without, I never use windows explorer at home, and get all confused and angry in work or at friend's houses when I do have to use it :D
so i have to delete and replace 4000 songs one by one? keeping rhapsody is looking like less of a hassle...

Actually, uou can do them "in place" ie, navigate to the iriver drive from your convertor, set up the conversion options, and set it to delete the originals....all done automagically behind the scenes.
and, pray tell, what is the 'convertor'? remember, you're talking to someone who knows NOTHING about this sort of thing!

That was s possiblesolution so that you could see your iRiver as a harddrive...possibly a BIOS setting. If you can get it to show up as a harddrive in My Computer, your life will probably be easier. I mean the program that converts the formats. Most such programs offer such facilities as "delete original" and "write converted file to source folder".

I hear that the new range that was launched yesterday has improved phones bundled.
Lovely looking new nanos launched, and a nice new version of Itunes, which runs a lot nicer. The coming zune obviously moved apple to do something.

You can, but it's not easy to do... there are softwares to do it, or you must know how to see hidden folders if you enable disk use.
So for regular joe, it's complicated.. though technically, iTunes is set to synch a folder on your hard disk, so you should have them on your hard disk.... I say technically, because you're bound to use manual mode to make sure your hard disk doesn't have 30 to 60 GB of files you won't use.

Yeah, the new iTunes seems buffy, it crashed about 5 times last night... but then again, I'm running Windows Vista, so it might be related to this, but the previous version didn't have any problem.
The Nanos are indeed cool, but still lack space... though 8 GB is more than enough if you use only music.. and they are in color finally.

Not only that... my recent iPod doesn't even come with the firewire cable with the 120 Volts adapter to plug in a normal outlet!
all it had was the USB cable.
They are cutting at the wrong places sometimes.
But for people with big ears like mine, those silly ear buds are useless.. they fall all the time, and in winter, since they freeze, you just move a bit and they get out of your ears...
I'm checking those new noise reduction earphones from Sony ;)

should be able to dump any old crap on it ,at least for storage/backup. Unles it's restricted. Most of the el-cheapo mp3 players u get with USB onboard are just flash drives with an OS (probably linux or free-bsd) and an mp3 decoder....you can do what you like with them, even install a full PC operating system on the, if you happen to have a motherboard that can boot from USB, and about a week to spare.
But there's fuck all that can handle all YOUR porn cozzie.
