Documentary series about British sci-fi starting on BBC4 on Monday at 9pm entitled "The Martians and Us". Gets a glowing review in the paper. Even better, in conjunction with this they're repeating the adaptation of "Day of the Triffids" which, I'm not ashamed to say, scared the living shit out of me when I was a nipper.

And DOTT scared the piss out of me too....oddly enough the book has even fewer triffid scenes than the TV version. A little bit of me epects to wake up in a dead world each morning thanks to that show :D

Yep i used to watch all of those.Sapphire and Steel had Joanna Lumley in if i remember right.They disappeared in space at the very end of the last episode i recall ,never to be seen again.that was one headfuck of a tv programme when yer 10 years old.
Martian Chronicles was ace in 1980 but i saw it repeated on sci fi channel a few years back and it was awful.Rock Hudson travelling the Martian canals or something.Not Martians' back passages i hasten to add
Hammer House Of Horror was another one .That was essential Saturday night viewing in 1980
some vintage sci fi i enjoyed as a kid although not british, cambo strike me down, was a german series called Raumpatrolle and Time Tunnel.

Fantastic. I sometimes wondered if I'd imagined that programme cos nobody else seemed to remember it. That image you posted is exactly as I rember it. The shadow moves slowly towards the chair. as you say, scary as fuck when you were a nipper.
The opening titles of Tales Of The Unexpected also scared me. Although the actual programme was usually gash.
Only vague memories of armchair thriller. S+S was a big fave of mine. The company making the audio series are the same people behind the audio adventures of the last 4 (old) Doctors, as well as such wonders as The Tomorrow People (eh remember that?)
I do remember one tales of the unexpected vividly....the one about a guy who invented a machine that let him hear plants.....roses screaming when cut, that sort of thing. And the only Hammer story I can remember is "the house that bled to death", which ended with a kid killing his folks for crimes against tiddles. The late night horror double bill on a Fri or Sat is what left me disliking the genre......When someone says "whatever you do, don;t go up to the castle, strange fortces lurk there and you will die" And our heroes, at the first breath of wind, say" let's shelter in that quaint old castle"...from then on, I want them to die, as a darwin award kind of thing. I hate movies based on human retardation.
God, you've brought back some memories for me. My treat was to stay up late on Saturday's with my mum and watch Hammer House of Horrors (is it any wonder I've turned out the way I have!)
Tales of the Unexpected too! I've now got the tune in my head and I always have to do that dance with it!

Aye, it was a real treat getting to stay up late and watch the Hammer movies at my grannys. The first one I ever saw was called The Vault of Horror and starred Tom Baker who was the Doctor Who at the time. That film will live in my memory forever. Very freakin scary when you were six or seven.
Was weird that the granparents didnae mind me watchin gory scenes of death and weird supernatural shit but the minute anybody flashed a nipple or some arse (and it happened quite a lot in Hammer movies)my granny would flick it over to the other side for a couple of minutes til the offending part had finished.

(If only they had stuck to horror instead of making those two APALLING Dr Who movies....mind you, unless I'm very much mistaken, they made Quatermass and the Pit....now there's a scary movie, even if it IS Sci fi....those scenes of the brainwashed masses standing in groups around the streets and the giant martian "demon" glowing over london.....nightmare stuff.)

i also remember an old black and white german series of edgar allen poe stories starring mainly klaus kinski. must have been made some time in the 1960s. it scared me shit less as a kid.

I have some of her RW output here somewhere, including Blue Veils and Golden Sands. I'm DEEPLY pissed off that the Radiophonic worksshop have been removed from the Doctor Who theme credits.....the arrangement, the whole feel of the tune, still owes more to Deliah than Ron, by Ron's own admission.
As for UFO...all Gerry Anderson shows are brilliant, and they all have brilliant music, by barry Gray, who's probably had as much effect on me as New Order, really, I have stacks of his tunes and listen to them all the time....Fuckin March of the Oysters from Stingray, what a tune.

This show could be rather interesting to watch. As long as there is no nudity. Alien Ladies with three breasts tend to put me off my Horlicks and Shortbread biscuits. I do hope it is going out to braodcast before the watershed. A 7am Sunday slot would be super.
The bollox of it is, I'll more than likely still be kipping, and/or lounging in the sheepdip pre-work, and believe it or not, the one incantation I know not how to invoke upon this fecking machine is the "record BBC4 at 9 you cunt" one (mainly on account of the sound for the tv card coming in via the soundcard and yours truly being far too pigshit lazy to find out how to describe that channel to the video software (coulda done it in the time it took me to type that, bt hey ho).

I don't really take any notice of conventions and the like, it's all too fan-boy for me. Mind you, I am gonna purchase a Baker scarf. Funny, I hated Sly McCoy BIG TIME when he took over, and now he is one of my all time faves.....if anyone needs convincing, watch the appalling TV movie with (the excellent) Paul Mcgann, McCoy's few pre-regeneration minutes are amazing.

Yup, following a Sontaran attempt to take over Galifrey (Invasion of Time), some geezer called The White Gaurdian sends the Dr off to find the 6 bits of the Key to Time (can't for the life of me remember why they're all over the place). Tom dumps Leala, picks up Romanadvoratrelundar V1.0 (Mary Tamm), and the next 6 stories are all linked, the silliest being The Pirate Planet (by a Mr D. Adams), which WILL make you belly laugh at times, as will the last scene of the last part of the last story, (script edited by, ahem, a Mr D. Adams)
Boaty's gonna take this as proof of my K9 undergarments, tho why he keeps asking "what pants are you wearing" is anyone's guess.

You're not wrong about the monster. Sat and watched in one go last night, still creepy in an obviously latex cotume type of way - hadn't seen it since I was six yet remembered odd bits, like when Sarah sees the Zygon lying dead on the barn floor.

If the show does anywhere over here I may go. Yes the musical version takes liberties with the story too, but it keeps the terror beautifully. The movie's been in pre-production already for 2 years. I have out-takes from the album here, and they have Burton and Essex doing nearly the whole book, already on tape :D
PS I do not object to Mr Cruise's film, I object to it taking the name of a story to which it bears NO relation at all. Name one similarity beyon an alien invasion ( in common with every invasion movie ever of course) between that crap and what HGW wrote.
