Has Bernard Sumner ever actually learned how to play guitar? That is so punk, to play lead guitar for almost 30 years without giving a shit about all that guitar musicianship bullcrap. Nothing worse than watching somebody showoff for a hour or more. So I say Bernard.

The Gliassando guitar at the start of Flying Teapot by Gong, it's the single nicest sound a guitar has EVER made, and no arguments PLEASE. Also, The Glorious Om Riff, the salmon song, and errrm Light in the Sky ( is that the song titled Diggy?), just by Steve Hillage. Oh and the full length Blue Room by theORB, has some amazing hillage solos on it, but unless you are familliar with his stlye, you wont recognise it as a guitar.

The Edge? If remember right-on "The Joshua Tree" he used something called an "Infinite Guitar" It is the size of a pick up and vibrates the strings. This creates infinte sustain. He can hold that note for a long time!!
A good example is "with or Without You" that long "whine" note? Infinite Guitar same with the repeated notes on the outro. beautiful playing but not much technical skill.

It's called an E-bow, it's basically a hand-held elctromagnet that creates a localised feedback sustaining string vibration. I've always wanted to get one, but they aren't cheap. They're used loads - you can hear it being used on stuff by Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Cocteaus, REM, RHCP etc etc.

Personally, I've found that the most technically skilled guitarists are often the least interesting guitarists, and those with the most soul aren't very technically skilled; Neil Young may be the best example of that phenomenon.

OK, but this is a subjective poll about favorite guitarists. The Edge is on somebody's favorite guitarists list. Whether he's technically accomplished or not isn't relevant to the thread. Personally, most of the guitarists on your list don't impress me, John Frusciante excepted.
And if I had expanded my list to 10 favorite guitarists, I would have included Neil Young and Johnny Ramone, among others-- neither a technically accomplished guitarist, but still among my favorites.
