Most Memorable Gigs

The Cure, either October 8, 1985, or December 7, 1987, I can't remember now, but what a show. I can still remember the combination of the absolutely brilliant light show and Porl whirling about like a psychedelic dervish.

The Cure, July 4, 1992, another brilliant show. Sigh.

The Who, supporting act The Clash, October 23, 1982. I can still hear the opening chords of I Can't Explain echoing off the stadium walls...

The Clash, January 23, 1984. The new lineup after Mick Jones left, a white hot punk band doing Rock the Casbah as punk.

The Ramones/Social Distortion, at the Berkeley Greek Theater, October 10, 1992. I will always remember the moonrise over Berkeley as Social Distortion kicked into Cold Feelings, followed later that night by the solid wall of noise that was The Ramones.

Neil Young, the Rust Never Sleeps tour, October 22, 1978 at the Cow Palace, San Francisco. I will never forget this moment:

New Order Brixton '87. Huge scramble to get away from the front as New Order start their set as many had gone to the front not expecting the place to take off. Made my way to the side for a breather only to hear the opening lines to DNE, no breather then!

Pogues March Leeds University 1985, first night of their first national tour. £1 entrance, pile of beer on stage being handed to the audience throughout, they went through every song they knew and then started repeating them, fantastic.

The Shamen, Newcastle University 1991. The Shamen at their height before they got that awful rapper joining. Tiny venue, very loud and amazing lights.

Madness (80/81?) Birmingham Top Rank Club; upstairs at the club, they had a seating platform that went around the entirity; I decided to stand on it to get a better view. Heel slipped off the back and my new 'rude girl' skirt with a split in, split further still, to meet the zip. It gave everyone behind me a good laugh, and Madness were great that night. However, I did have to stand in the shadows up a wall for the remainder of the night.......

Manic Street Preachers (Belfast Waterfront Hall) 2004 - Manics had released Lifeblood one of their best albums and that day had re released The Holy Bible so there were tons of Holy Bible numbers in the set.

Snow Patrol (Belfast Ulster Hall) 2004 - Last night of the tour.

Killing Joke (Liverpool Academy) 2005 - Met some really top people at the gig, and KJ were totally alien to anything I expected. Also the first time I went to a gig and got a memento (a drumstick)

KT Tunstall (Belfast Waterfront Hall) 2005 - Nearly got into a punchup.

The Prodigy (Belfast Odyssey Arena) 2005 - Fuck em and their law.

U2-ZOOROPA gig @ WEMBLEY STADIUM.Amazing gig,atmosphere was electric and the Zoo Tv stage set was the best I've ever seen.Memorable moment Bonio as Mr MacPhisto ringing for a pizza.

NEW ORDER at HACIENDA 1984 Manchester.1st time I saw 'em got right up to the front.One of these days I'll commandeer a scanner and get these lovely photos on the site.Got a bit crushed,1st time in a mosh assault. Highlight: within flirting distance of Gillian.

OMD at Manchester Apollo 1984 i think.JUNK CULTURE tour. One of the most enjoyably fun gigs I've ever been too. Highlight: Andy Mcluskey's rabid rag doll dance to MAID OF ORLEANS. Got to meet the lads after the gig.Asked Andy if he considered bringing out a "Shape Up And Dance" video.

LIVE 8 2005 Good line up,but by the time the Floyd and Macca came on,I was knackered and hungry and wanted it to end. Highlight: toss up between Bono letting out the doves during BEAUTIFUL DAY ,and Robbie.

FESTIVAL OF THE TENTH SUMMER Manchester G-Mex 1986 Supposed to be a celebration of punk in Manchester,what can i say,NO....SMITHS.....OMD.....PETE SHELLEY....THE FALL.A great day. HIGHLIGHT? Tossup between Mozzer brandishing his "Queen Is Dead" placard or NO and Ian Mcculloch doing CEREMONY.

MORRISSEY at Manchester MOVE festival,Lancashire Cricket Ground 2004.Supported by NEW YORK DOLLS and BETA BAND,I was rooted to the spot from teatime to the end near the front.Fantastic gig.Highlight? "I'm old enough to be your postman!" reply to a girl fan saying I LOVE YOU MOZZER.

Morrissey in various places. The MEN was spectacular, more akin to a spiritual gathering than a gig. Me and Shug being extremely plastered, much to the annoyance of Mrs Shug. The Apollo as well when Jesse Tobias waved my flag onstage after the gig.

The Cure doing all the really old stuff at Royal Albert Hall.

Seeing Richard Ashcroft blow Oasis off stage in 2002.

And pretty much all of the Carling 24 in 2005. Seeing The Longcut at 8am in The Roadhouse, Doves in the Ritz, Elbow in front of 250 people in their studio, The Coral and finally Ian Brown in the academy coming onstag at 1am.

Honorary festival mentions to Paul Mccartney, The Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, Madness, British Sea Power, Muse... oh loads really...

Ermm... the four most memorable gigs i can think of aside from NO ones are possibly these, but my memory is shot to pieces.

Stiff Little Fingers/Blue Aeroplanes/Stump at the Electric Ballroom in Camden late 1988 mebbe. Memorable cos Stump blew a gasket mid-set and split up, and the Blue Aeroplanes did an encore with 21 lead guitarists generally pulled out from the audience.

The Megadog at Brixton Academy in 1990 NYE. Orbital, Leftfield, Eat Static, Banco de Gaia, Black Dog to name just a few.

Orbital either in a field near Croydon or at the Royal Albert Hall ca 1996. Croydon one was cool cos they were asking a 20,000 strong crowd for requests.

Banco de Gaia/Transglobal Underground at Southampton University about 1995. Total mind-bender of a gig, altering my attitude to music. Then again might have been the e.

New Order 1989. A lot of things went wrong during the concert. Rammstein 2005. Take a look at the latest DVD. Cocteau Twins 1997 or 1998. Just because it was them. Kraftwerk 1991. Unforgettable experience. Killing Joke 1991 or 1992... In a small venue, the happy few. Young Gods 1989 or 1990. At that time, the managers of the venue used to offer a free concert per month - total frenzy. The Cure 1989. Like Rammstein, in an old Roman arena.

Pearl Jam on my baby sister's birthday....proved they could be a great live show unrivaled when they were up to it.

5/27/2001-Eric Clapton MCI Center-Washington DC

just showed how to play and and not having to show off

the encore was all CREAM!! and a tip of the cap to Billy Preston (RIP) who got out from behind the keyboards to lead vocal on "Will It Go Round in Circles" Seeing him do his dance was priceless.

12/22/2002 Aerosmith MCI Center, Washington DC

last night of a world tour. Stuck to the 70s stuff. Pretty much all "Get Your Wings" Toys in The Attic" and "Rocks" plus a 15 minute blowout version of "Train Kept a Rollin"-still the ultimate Aerosmith song

8/16/2004-Prince MCI Center Washington DC

Nearly 3 hours of the man himself-no opening act. The whole band the whole time was in constant motion.

he had Candy Dulfer on Sax and maceo Parker on horns!! (part of the JBs-james Brown's backing bad in the late 60s/early 70s)

Violent Femmes (first album tour) Over 1,000 kids go absolutely nuts, bouncing off the walls and singing all of the words to the songs from the album in whirling dervish frenzy. Utterly fantastic night, even the Femmes themselves recalled the show very fondly years later in interviews.

The Ramones: kings of U.S. punk. with D.O.A. kings of Canadian punk. Nuff said.

Einsturzende Neubauten: Mufti and N.U. Unruh banging the hell out of whatever's near, Marc Chung rattling off bass lines that would loosen fillings, Blixa Bargeld screaming and posing, plus Alexander Hacke laying a sheen of guitar feedback over the whole thing. There was some fire in the mix as well. What's not to love about that?

The Fall: Brix E. laying on her back, in a short skirt, kicking up her heels playing guitar, while Mark E. looked rather nonplussed about the whole thing, as did Hanley, Hanley, and Scanlon.

A couple of memorable things about gigs I've been to...

JJ72 had so many technical problems that they gave up after three songs and walked off. They came back when everything was fixed.

Someone climing the lighting rig during Neds Atomic Dustbin and it nearly toppling into the crowd.

Bloc Party's bassist discovering that his bass was out of tune just before launching into So Here We Are - leaving the other three to keep that lovely intro going for a good two minutes while it was retuned.

Snow Patrol being bullied into playing How To Be Dead by an enthusiastic punter. They hadn't rehearsed it, as Gary Lightbody tried several times to point out, but had a stab at it anyway. "Don't blame me if it's shit"...

Oh yeah, and someone grabbing Harriet Wheeler's boob at a Sundays gig.

Most memorable moment ever was probably either Hooky turning me inside out at the Apollo (for which he was UTTERLY unapologetic when I spoke to him in Belfast a coupla weeks later...good man!!). Or hearing Orbital play the Dr Who theme for the first time, I had no idea they had done a version of it, and I'm standing there in the Leeds T+C and suddenly this rolling duggadadugdaduggadadug on one note, modulated into that most wonderful of electronic basslines (I've never heard a recording of them opening it this way, and am starting to think I may have gone to another place briefly and filled in the gaps afterwards), it was a funny moment, about 60% of the audience went SPASTIC, and the remainder stared at them like they'd gone mental ( which they had).

Even before my recent bout of numptyitis, I always prefered staying fairly sober for gigs, so I could fix ever note in my memory....THEN attempt to consume my own body weight in drink and drugs afterwards.

This alsways ended the same way....me bouncing off the walls at 5am, while everyone else wants to sleep, followed by weeks of convincing them that (for example) the Orb actually played for 2.5 hours and not, as they universally believed, 20 minutes.

Muse at Earls Court Dec 04. End of what had been the first genuinely fantastic year for music in ages. Had soulwax open, who were really good, then The Zutons came on who were quite good, then Muse played a absolute blinder. Matt Bellamy came running onstage from outside with his own camera, opened with Hysteria, then an hour and a bit of no talking, just loud playing, finishing the main set with Time is Running Out and Plug in Baby, when big black balloons descended from the ceiling. Amazing. Blew Morrissey who played there the night before away and is easily one of the best gigs i've ever seen.

Of course, then getting the bus straight back to Manchester, arriving at 430 (having missed the last bus back to Stockport by ten minutes) in sub zero temperatures, forcing me to spend £25 on a taxi home was not that great.

I was actually a pretty good week for gigs that. Kloot on the Monday, Morrissey in Brum on the Tuesday, 5th av with mates from college on the wednesday, 5th av with mates from uni on thursday, Manics on the friday, Morrissey on the Saturday and Muse on the Sunday. I had tickets to the Charlatans on the sunday... but i just couldnt summon the energy to ge to Salford, in the freezing cold, and get all the way back again.

'bout half way through crystal, the bass just grew bigger balls, scarily deep....it made the room ring FFS it was that loud. My stomach having been on the move since 5am that day, and having been on a high speed sea catermaran, and various coaches, basically gave up and decided to empty itself in protest, a little gastro-intestinal "fuck you mate" if you like.. LOL...NEVER in my life have I ended up that way from over doing it (tho I did miss the shamen and happy mondays in belfast cos I got really drunk and lost the will to live before the delayed doors actually opened) :(

So when I met the Hookster I said "oi fuckface, you made me puke rings last week", and he just grinned insanely at me......like a true bass god should. Any complaints I have ever received regarding injury and damage inflicted by my rumbleplank, have been met with the same deep concern.

My 'most memorable gigs' include

1. Kraftwerk Minimum Maximum Tour Late Show - Brixton Academy, London 20th March 2004. Okay Ralf, Florian and co. are probably running things from their Düsseldorf HQ but the way the put it together, the stageshow, the atmosphere etc. left me in awe at being a part of an amazing experience. Also I sure I saw Orbital's Phil Hartnoll in the crowd! 2. New Order - Manchester Apollo 14th November 2005 - My second NO gig and better than the first time I saw them in the terms of set - some JD rarities, crowd - riotous and 'Viking's' in full effect and apart from Kraftwerk I would have rated this as my best gig ever! 3. New Order - Wembley Arena 28th October 2006 - Again another enjoyable NO gig totally on the money and blew away any cynicism about the set, desire and passion to put on a good show! 4. Depeche Mode Playing the Angel Tour - Manchester MEN Arena 30th March 2006 or O2 Festival Hyde Park 25th June 2006 - Couldn't split both of these gigs. Dave, Martin and Fletch still know how to put on an awesome show. Shame I never liked them in their Violator or Devotional era. 5. Chemical Brothers Creamfields - Liverpool 28th August 2004 -F***ing brilliant gig and an amazing experience from Tom & Ed that I'd recommend to anyone. To only pity was not seeing Bernard join them for Out Of Control! Still if you like dance music which rocks what more could you want! 6. Moby Hotel Tour - Manchester Apollo 17th May 2005 - Whether it was the smaller venue - he played the MEN Arena in 2002, less media hype surrounding Hotel, his rants against GW Bush etc. and a more wider span of material it was a thoroughly enjoyable gig ranging from Rave classics like Go and Feeling So Real, tracks from his multi-million selling Play and excellent cover versions of JD/NO's New Dawn Fades and Temptation. 7. Underworld Budrising Festival - Marlay Park Dublin 20th August 2005 - Not quite the Underworld I wished I'd seen around the period of Everything Everything tour period but Karl and Rick still know how to make a festival Rave! 8. Moby Play Tour - Manchester MEN Arena 23rd November 2002 - Again a good gig - see the Hotel Tour, however for some reason I'd rate this slightly lower than that one. 9. Goldfrapp - Manchester Academy 10th October 2005 - I'd recommend their gigs to anyone who likes their singles/albums. The 'theatatrics' are perhaps a little overdone but overall they cover their material from Felt Mountain to Supernature reasonably seamlessly and managed to meet Alison and Will - a top bloke up for a chat, after the show. 10. Faithless - Alexandra Palace London 29th April 2005 - Again not quite in their 'Stadium Rave' heyday but Maxi, Sister Bliss, Rollo and co. certainly know how to make Dance music feel like real, live experience you'll never forget. What's more the temperature shot up to something more like Singapore in the height of summer rather than North London in April!

Other candidates for memorable gigs include Leftfield, Royksopp Ladytron and other New Order gigs and my only regret is not getting around to Orbital before they decided to call it a day! Cheers!

LOL! I almost saw them as well at Liverpool University in 1991 but didn't quite get around to getting a ticket. They did have their moments and En-Tact is one of the best Dance albums of the early '90's however it was Ebenezer Goode which destroyed their credibility in Dance Music circles and if they hadn't have done that one they may well have become as revered as say Orbital, Chemicals, Underworld, Faithless etc. Still Hypereal makes up for any this and is still one of my favourite Dance tracks nearly 17 years on. The Moby gig at the Apollo was good, but it wasnt great. In fact, now that you've mentioned it, i;ve only just remembered i was there. It dragged on a bit I must say. Was good though.

The Goldfrapp gig at the academy was very good. Didnt bother with the Apollo gigs a few month later though. Dont know why.

Mary J Blige - MEN Arena - 20th April 2002 I was blown away by her voice, my word that woman can sing.

Happy Mondays supporting Oasis – Reebok Stadium – July 2000 First ever gig at our new stadium, had a brilliant day, out at lunch drinking in the sun then an awesome set by the Mondays who blew Oasis out of the water!

New Order – Move Festival, Old Trafford Cricket Ground – 13th July 2002 My first ever time seeing New Order (I never knew when they toured pre-internet!). I was almost in tears at finally seeing them. Great weather and good build up too, thanks to Echo and the Bunnymen and Doves.

Glen Tilbrook – The Moses Gate, Farnworth, Bolton – 2004 An intimate venue with the Squeeze frontman – amazing.

Duran Duran – Birmingham NEC – 18th April 2004 Went for old times sake – these are absolutely amazing live, even pushing 50.

U2 – Cardiff Millennium Stadium – 29th June 2005 Was never a major fan, only went because someone else cancelled. I think this was one of the best gigs ever. The Killers supported and I was really into them at the time.

Luther Vandross – MEN Arena – sometime in 2000 Awesome what a legend.

Editors – Manchester Apollo – 29th May 2006 First time I’ve seen them, was very impressed. Fell in love with the singer!

The Streets – Aberdeen Music Hall – 30th April 2006 Great place and the crowd were mental.

Hot Chip – The Fire Station, Bournemouth – 8th October 2006 This was the day before first New Order gig of October tour and the only reason it’s being mentioned!

New Order – Bournemouth – 9th October 2006 First gig of the October tour – I was besides myself with excitement about what the month would bring. Blackpool/Wolves was probably my favourite, but this was the first so this is the one I’m mentioning. Best after show party too!

The Buzzcocks – Manchester Academy 1 – 1st December 2006 Carnage!

ACR in Liverpool in front of 10 people...

Arctic Monkeys in the new bands tent at Leeds festival. I didnt think they were very good, but my god was that tent rammed and everyone else knew all the words to every song. Pretty impressive since this was a good two months before "I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor"

EDIT: The same day, watching Editors open the Radio 1 tent at midday. They were absolutely brilliant and pretty much set the tone for one of the greatest days of live music i ever experienced with Editors, The Arcade Fire, We Are Scientists, Arctic Monkeys, The Charlatans, Mystery Jets, and to top it all an absolutely blinding set from Foo Fighters.

ermm...., I think it was Clan Of Xymox, 1988, Gwardia Hall, Warsaw, a few days before my final highschool exams. Why this gig? Maybe cos it was a time I was in love in almost every 4AD's band. I still remember that gig as the most emotional for me.

Saw them at ULU back in 1988 or 1989 too, I have only just recently bought some of their CDs to replace my old vinyl collection.

The The at the Apollo in '89 is by far the best gig I've ever been to and probably ever will.

I have very happy memories of Bournemouth NO this year - an amazing 'planes, trains and automobiles' journey down, cracking pre-match drinks, amazing gig, excellent afterparty and after-afterparty.

Summerpops is memorable for all the wrong reasons.

I'll never forget the U2 gig in Japan for the experience, the lights, the performance of the band and for having it confirmed even Bongo's own band think he's a dick.

Happy Mondays at Cities In The Park August 91 ,that was another top gig.Right down the front at that one.

Saw The Shamen a couple of times at Cov polytechnic.Once in 1990 when they were good and then again a year later but alas that was when Mr C had joined

St Etienne one Saturday afternoon at Glasto was another that springs to mind .94 or 95 i think

Pretty good, not a patch on Mudhoney though.

EDIT: Yes! Mudhoney, loads of times from about '89 to '93. Particularly Newcastle Riverside, tiny venue packed out. Specific memory is this fella stage diving guitar and all at the same venue

True Al! I think after Will Sinn's death and the commerical success of Move Any Mountain The Shamen were happy to go along with being lumped in the 'pop-rave' camp with dross like 2 Unlimited etc. rather than going down a more 'progressive' route of say Leftfield, Fluke etc. and/or the electronic Dance experiments of Orbital etc. at the time. However Mr C a s*** rapper as they come still managed to put together one of London's best tech-house clubs The End. Cheers!

I agree Liam. Goldfrapp's gig at the Academy was good but after I'd seen it I kind of felt I'd seen everything I was going to see from them and the material geared up to Supernature and also didn't bother with their '06 gigs in Liverpool and Manchester. Having said that I did see them at the O2 festival in Hyde Park and although they were supporting Depeche Mode and there were some time constraints I kind of felt they were a little lacklustre that day! May see them again some day? Cheers!

Still, there are some memorable moments that stand out from the haze... The first time I heard those opening chords of "My My, Hey Hey" was live at the Cow Palace. I can still hear it. i still remember looking back at the crowd, and everybody-- EVERYBODY-- was wearing these 3D glasses that Neil Young had passed out as we entered the Cow Palace. It was an amazing show...

New Order – Move Festival, Old Trafford Cricket Ground – 13th July 2002 My first ever time seeing New Order (I never knew when they toured pre-internet!). I was almost in tears at finally seeing them. Great weather and good build up too, thanks to Echo and the Bunnymen and Doves.

Glen Tilbrook – The Moses Gate, Farnworth, Bolton – 2004 An intimate venue with the Squeeze frontman – amazing.

Duran Duran – Birmingham NEC – 18th April 2004 Went for old times sake – these are absolutely amazing live, even pushing 50.

U2 – Cardiff Millennium Stadium – 29th June 2005 Was never a major fan, only went because someone else cancelled. I think this was one of the best gigs ever. The Killers supported and I was really into them at the time.

Luther Vandross – MEN Arena – sometime in 2000 Awesome what a legend.

Editors – Manchester Apollo – 29th May 2006 First time I’ve seen them, was very impressed. Fell in love with the singer!

The Streets – Aberdeen Music Hall – 30th April 2006 Great place and the crowd were mental.

Hot Chip – The Fire Station, Bournemouth – 8th October 2006 This was the day before first New Order gig of October tour and the only reason it’s being mentioned!

New Order – Bournemouth – 9th October 2006 First gig of the October tour – I was besides myself with excitement about what the month would bring. Blackpool/Wolves was probably my favourite, but this was the first so this is the one I’m mentioning. Best after show party too!
