The missus persuaded me to start using this, bit dubious at first, thinking it would just be some rubbish myspace clone, but it's proved a great way of getting in touch with folks I haven't spoken to in ages... Anyone else use it?

It's just myspace for the over-30's!

Sat looking through a mate's Facebook profile in Munich last month. And he just had a long list of linked girlies, going, "Shagged her," "Shagged her," "Went out with her but she was a nutter," "Shagged her," "She blew me out." etc et cetera.

As blokes are wont to do!

I'm in.

It's alright. Yet another messaging and keep in touch type of service.

Because of the 'friends' thing you can look at all the friends of friends - found that some people I know are still in contact with people who are still in contact with people... Suppose it's just interesting to see what folks are up to nowadays... But then again, online friendships... :nono:

My friend says it's great for looking up ex's! That's got me intrigued. How can you do that?

Well, you can look through all your friend's friends lists for a start - also just look people up by name or email address - if they're registered you can put in a friend requst and if they accept you can see their profile, etc. Think you can send PMs without being accepted. If you have hotmail it will automatically scan your address book to see if people are registered... Just put in a name, scroll through the results and see if you get 'lucky'...

so what happens if you "Poke" someone? Do it send them a message saying you have looked at their profile or something? it's a bit frustrating to navigate, this is!

I suppose the poke thing is just a quick "Hi"... Although I did get a bit worried first time i got 'poked' :ignore:

Err, sounds a bit too much like cyber stalking to me! I'd get carried away for sure.

Reminds me of a story about my daft mate Malky. He's the most computer illiterate person I know. He heard about Friends Reunited and decided to look up his ex who he had up until then managed to avoid contacting since she left him a few years previously.

I'm not entirely sure how he did this but in his attempts to locate her he registered, under his own name, in her class at school (she went to school down south). He wasn't even aware he'd done this til she emailed him a few weeks later pointing the fact out to him. Daft twat!

Hence the fun... I have thusfar limited myself to people I genuinely was very friendly with in the past (no exes), rather than just any random I've ever met... It's fun, but I'm sure the novelty will wear off soon...

fooked if I understand this thing. how do you get into a network? if anyone out there understands it, add me as a friend so I can get a grasp of how it works!

You can either join an existing one (where you live, school, work, etc.) or start one if none exists... To be fair the networks are fairly shite... Although some of the groups are amusing...

Actually, I am.

Pretty nice place to set up a familly page where all people in your familly can post pictures at the same place and well, post some stuff.

It's much more interesting than MySpace.. Myspace is nice for music, but this, on the other hand, can actually help you get in touch with people.

Watch out - academics are watching YOU:

Poke 1.0 - a Facebook social research symposium

A half-day social research symposium organised by the London Knowledge Lab, University of London, UK

Thursday 15th November 2007

This social research symposium will allow academics who are researching the 'Facebook' social networking site to meet and exchange ideas. Researchers are welcome from the fields of sociology, media, communication & cultural studies, information science, education, politics, psychology, geography and any other sphere of 'internet research'. PhD and post-doctoral researchers are especially welcome, as are researchers considering Facebook as a potential area of research.

It is intended that there will be five or six research papers presented as well as plenty of time for discussion and face-to-face networking. Topics for discussion will include:

* Empirical studies of Facebook users and Facebook uses; * Issues of ethics and access when researching Facebook; * Other methodological issues when researching Facebook; * The use of Facebook as a social research tool; * The future of Facebook research - emerging trends and practices.

The symposium will be free of charge but spaces will be limited and allocated on an RSVP first-come-first-served basis. If you wish to attend then email Neil Selwyn (n.selwyn@ioe.ac.uk) to reserve a place by Friday 31st August 2007.

If you wish to present a research paper then email an outline abstract of 500 words to Neil Selwyn (n.selwyn@ioe.ac.uk) by Tuesday 31st July 2007. Accepted presenters will be informed by Friday August 31st 2007.

The symposium will take place between 13.00pm to 17.30 pm on Thursday 15th November 2007 in the London Knowledge Lab (located in the Bloomsbury/ Holburn area of central London).

The scariest thing is that Fradley qualifies as an accademic......the mind boggles as to just who and what may be involved in this study.

At least yer all getting answers from me with gobbook, unlike myspace. Used to get these emails, "so and so has sent you a friend request on myspace", and I would do nothing about it cos I couldn't face logging into that script crippled monstrosity.

Managed to answer all of ye so far (even if not all the req's were mailed to me for some reason).

Fuck, I may even fill in some profile details.

starting to get the hang of this now, haven't "accidentally" poked any fit looking women all week!

we could do with some more NOOLers signing up though, only 37 members of the NOOL group so far, and we know there are a lot more than that regular posters on here.

that was Keele University - quite ironic really as I'd just signed up to the Alumni facebook group when I read that. Sod's law I didn't get a chance to whinge about the useless fuckers who used to lecture me 20 years ago!

At least with Facebook and Myspace you can id who's doing the slagging and get it sorted if the comments are in any way 'libelous'... We had a fair bit of trouble with rsatemyteacher.com (may not be the correct address?) at work recently, some absolutely shocking accusations/comments made about colleagues, unions and all involved - at least that site now checks all posts... I also rather suspect having seen some of things written about colleagues that they are rating themselves as the best thing since sliced bread, as I can't see any pupils thinking they're that great... I on the other hand have a good rating based purely on being a good teacher...

You have friends with exciting lives I see

Don't see the point of changing this unless something not ordinary happens.

For the NOOL group, it's strictly promotional... I don't post on that one, but it's also a great tools to tag names on pictures.

I found a lot of friends from my past on there I must say... it's entertaining, plus I like it's interface, it's simple.

Facebook is the only social networking site I use now. I scrapped my myspace page. I miss the days when Facebook used to belong to college students, exclusively, and without those funky applications.

Well in germany we have that - called StudiVZ. A facebook clone for students (without applications). Someone bought that site for a great amount of money (even though the boys didn't invent it - but just copied facebook (obviously)... strange world)...

Funny that. I miss the days when this site used to be about New Order, and the people who came on here had heard of the band and weren't here exclusively to post about themselves.
