I don't know if anyone cares about that (1000th unique 
) concert. I wonder if that is about saving our the earth and climate - do they run the electricity with solar power? Do they use recycled beer cups? I bet this event is as bad to the enviroment as anything they accuse ;).

I'm an engineer and even I can't understand the whole oil seperation process to create artificial oil from tar sands, but all I know is that it takes a lot of energy and water, plus returns very VERY toxic water and a lot of carbon dioxyde in the atmosphere.
So nothing good.. but US finds Canada more "stable" than the middle east and Venezuela as an oil provider.... so...! Apparently Alberta has a tar sand resource big as the whole state of Florida, and now that it's becoming affordable... they are pumping.
Meanwhile, though we are producing oil.. we're buying from the outside for our domestic needs... go figure.

Absolutely real. I could pick out the bits she was playing pretty clearly... low in the mix.

Seen an excellent documentary on it on Discovery. The process essentially starts like open cast mining, the trucks then dump it into a "production line" type affair, as far as I can tell getting the oil out involves water to separate it and then something akin to the usual factionating process to get the right grades of oil.
Apparently the condition of their activities is that they must return the land to it's original condition. Can't remember the company that pioneered it, but as soon as they proved it could work, Shell started to snipe in.

Do they actual recycle all the stuff you collect anyway? Who knows what they do with it after they empty the trash bins? People mix in so much bad stuff in also. Sure, much of it gets recycyled by some definition but maybe we are wasting millions of barrels of oil transporting garbage needlessly, just so we can pretend we are doing the right think. Heck, some Tony Soprano type is prolly taking money to recycle something and dumping it all in some pond in some urban blight area.
People are such hypocrites thou... I've seen hippy types too lazy to even recycle cans and beer bottles ("like i have time to worry about that, man") My 89yo Grandma is the best recycler, she wants nothing to go to waste... she can't stand our throw-away culture. She wants at least three different people to read a magazine, then make sure it is recycled. I'm sure Sting is making sure he has low impact on our environment... actually Sting seems like kinda an egotistic dick the last 25 years but somehow still looks the same.
Well... you know it's actually cheaper to buy some products than to repair them.
For example, a PRINTER is cheaper if you buy it instead of changing its defective pieces... it's a non-sense, but it is.
The list can go on...

Things don't even need to be broken - I found out yesterday that it was cheaper for me to buy a new strimmer than it was to replace the cord in the one I already had.

It's a great swindle anyway. We can't stop it and it's not our fault alone. There was always changes in climate and stuff for billions of years. And no one produces more CO2 than the ocean alone. So pump out the water and we're save . I think it's more than time for the humans to die out anyway. So stop collecting money for nothing.
But anyway it is not wrong to keep up ecologically friendly living. And may it be just to tell your grand-grand children, that you are not guilty because you alyways sorted your waste.

Why can't Canada import oil and gas from Russia over the pole? It's cheaper and closer. Pipes from Vorkuta and Tymen provide entire Europe with gas. Soon the whole Artic will become a huge pond and people will surf from Greenland coast to Baffin Land to Novaya Zemlya.

The interesting thing is that our energy and water consumption in the home and petrol constitute only about a third of our impact.
The rest is made up of the goods and food we buy, as they all require energy and water to manufacture.
Next those environmentalists will stop me from having a nice meal.

Such as, buy your CDs online, you will save the oil used by the truck that carries them.
Don't know about you, but I like to actually HAVE something in my hands when I buy something.. Make them lossless and without any piracy protection and I might do it, but I'd miss the art.

Nope... I rely entirely on legislation to make that.
Give the car manufacturer up to 2020 to remove completely gaz from car, and they will make it... they actually did already with the EV-1, but they dropped the project completely.
I fear that until there is oil on our planet, the lobbies will make it work.
Governments should finance hybrid cars more than they do... it's a first step.
It's not normal it costs you more to buy those type of car, and that they have higher interest rate than other cars. I believe this is the way to go since it allows you to make long distances when you need it.
All trucks should be Hybrid, completely...
But I can dream... won't happen in our lifetime.

If arsed Wiki Tar sands and- or Suncorp, Syncrude, Syneco and the Athabasca region NE Alberta and Saskatchewan area. Incredible stuff really. For refining. The thing is Steam Extraction was found to be effective back in 1979 and it's only recent that Vapour Extraction is getting more of a nod and the attention.

I hope the event does some good and create more awareness about the environment, etc. But Im as cynical as the next person. Its all very well us recycling but apparently all our rubbish just gets shipped to landfill sites in China (cos its cheaper than to actually recycle it!).
We can all do our bit and that but unless the big pollutors (ie China and US) start tackling the problem then its a lost cause. And China aint gonna be worried with such distractions in its quest to be a super industralised power.
I did watch most of the event and thought it was pretty entertaining. There were some bad timings with the links to other cities performers but there was the option to stick with London by using the interactive option.
Also, not sure Jonathan Ross was best choice as anchorman. As much as he can amuse me, he just seemed to treat the whole event too light heartedly and didnt really have much conviction about the whole thing.

Leo taught me to use halogen bulbs with mercury instead of regular bulbs for my wall lamps - it's more expensive to buy but it saves more money on electricity and as a result benefits for the enviroment.
yeh yeh. Just replace the broken bulbs, otherwise the energy spent in producing them will have been wasted.
of course he inverted that didn't he. ;) we soon won't be able to buy an old-fashioned incandescent light bulb in this country. the power companies are giving away free packs of energy savers.
There's no question CFL's are superior bulbs, less power, longer life, and a more pleasing spectrum than standard tungsten alloy incandescents, if you make an effort you can get some with an almost natural daylight quality. All the examples I own have circuitry to make them oscillate faster than the standard mains 50Hz, so they don't drive you mental. The downside is that the largest I can find with a standard bayonet fitting is 20W...apprx=100W, 30 or 40 would be great, and not only cheaper, but less ruddy bother than a 150 or 200W Incandescent.
And as for Mercury vapour discharge lamps...yer fuckin kidding right? I doubt they come in less than 200W, and they have chuffing mercury in 'em (OK milligrammes of it, but still).
