Smoking Ban

How's it going down there for you lot since they started the ban? Very surprised to read from BIGINOIL's post that it was "largely ignored" at the recent Mondays gig. Wouldn't happen up here. Stewards actually went on stage at The Streets gig at the Academy and told the boy Skinner that it would be show-over if one of his backing band didn't stop smoking. And did someone from these very boards not get flung out the New Order gig at said venue for the same crime?

That said the ban has been almost impeccably observed by everyone since March last year. The Glasgow enforcement team haven't issued one fine since it all started. Not seen or heard of anyone chancing a crafty fag, and I spend a fair portion of my week in pubs and clubs. Are people really ignoring it down there?

I think it's bizarre that it's taken so long to bring in such a common-sense bit of legislation. Unbelievable that bar/club/resto staff have been subjected to passive smoking for so many years. And all the bluster from the licensed trade about how it's gonna end in pubs shutting down has proved to be utter bollocks. According to the SLTA's own figures turnover and spend per-heead actually increased in the last twelve months.

It is, without question, the greatest thing to happen to this country in my lifetime.

I've not seen any hint of folks ignoring the ban so far... Not really even any annoyance over it from smokers... Just a fact of life now... My local's got lights and heaters and a covered (though wall-less) area in the beer garden, so even in winter it shouldn't be that much of a problem if you want a fag... Not sure if my local actually smells any better inside though...

The Wetherspoons smelt great the other day, only cos the air con and extractors were on full blast though. Everywhere else i've been in stinks of stale ale, sweat or onions...

Yes, they are two flights down, but there was a window to a narrow flue about 18" wide that had daylight.

Yes, they are two flights down, but there was a window to a narrow flue about 18" wide that had daylight.

As has been mentioned before, the one downside of the smoking ban is that pubs all smell of farts, BO and stale lager. All quite bad to put up with but none of which give you cancer (with the exception of those really bad Guiness farts).

A godsend for non smokers, a pain in the arse for smokers. When we actually get some decent weather however im sure the non smokers will have a moan about everyone sitting outside smoking.

It's a Godsend to be able to spend an hour in a pub and not come out stinking like a fucking ashtray, but I imagine such rules will continue to be casually flaunted at gigs - especially all-standing ones like The Ritz.

After all, if there's - say - 50 folk smoking in the middle of a packed-out gig, how exactly are the much-smaller-in-numbers security types going to stop them all without it kicking off?

The only places I've even heard of it being an issue is at gig venues. And in that situation the meathead security will just wade right in and cart the offenders out the door. Punters can have a go if they like but I've yet to see a drunk punter come any better than second place in an argument with bouncers.

As I said, it happened to someone from here at the last NO gig in the Glasgow Academy, cant remember who though.

Steve One makes a good point though, all the beer gardens round my way are now being spoiled by stinky smokers!

Think its a bit much that you can't smoke in a pub anymore. Luckily i'm a non-smoker anyway.

The stench inside nightclubs (all that sweat - haven't people heard of deodorants?, stale beer, puke, farts)... Okay, they don't give you cancer, but for fucks sake!

Also, with everybody have to smoke outside (of a club/pub), then for those living near/opposite the venue, their nights are going to be a lot noisier from now on... What happens in Scotland with that - are there lots of complaints?

Im all in favour of smoking onlky being permitted in a small part of a pub and not at the bar, but this is just using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut

And the tiny, ventilated sections at airports (Gatwick being the one that springs to mind first) They really didnt hurt anyone and before a 10 hour flight, i hardly think a quick tab is too much to ask

When I saw the Mondays in Aberdeen, Ryder was clearly desperate for a snout. "£15 grand if I light up" he moaned. Then didn't.

The girl who was standing behind me did though. And it was a reefer. As I hinted in my earlier post though, I also saw the same girl share an E with her mate and also enjoy a dab of coke.

Daft as it sounds though, at least pills and coke don't affect other people like cigarettes do...

I've just been waiting for the right thread to come along. I got bored, so here I am. I had dreamt that my first post might be more ethereal but no, it was about Stoke.

Well since it's ilegal now, and since the NHS wont treat you no matter HOW much fag tax you give them, there is now no reason at all not to buy your baccy from the local ice cream man/other black market operative.

Has anyone considered the effects of sending smokers out in the freezing elements?

As has been said, it's just made the pubs and clubs switch off their air con. Airliners are now MUCH LESS healthy as passengers now rebreath unfiltered air for their whole flight.

I am also terrified walking to the bus station to get to work as one of the local hood bars is in between, and now has a halo of assholes outside it!!

No matter, I understand the need for it in pubs....but law should force owneers to keep filtration running.

Haven't seen anyone ignoring the ban in my part of the world so far. It hasn't hurt business in any of the clubs and bars I go to, either - in fact, most of them are now busier than ever.

Some hotels are still selling 'smoking rooms'; and of course, you can still smoke in the houses of parly and in prison.

It means I will be able to go for lunch wherever I like, and take my son, without worrying about him breathing in over 2000 poisonous chemicals! I think it is long overdue, and bloody great! A certain bass-god informed me that in LA it's illegal to smoke in the street. Can anyone confirm?

I also remember reading that they banned smoking on all of Sydney's beaches a couple of years back. That's something i'm DEFINEATELY all for. Nowt worse than laying down on a lovely beach somehwere only to notice that your surrounded by fag ends. Gross.

Well... on the first of January 2008 smoking is banned in Europe, too. I can't await it. As a non-smoker I'm looking forward to it. Not only because of my job in the multiplex cinema (it will be hard enough to tell people not to smoke there anymore then)...

Well I don't see the number of smokers decrease over here. Indeed all the "like-to-be-hip" teens are smoking (and drinking) just for provocation and coolness. You have to prevent kids from starting that sh**... I never started it because I hated it when my parents smoked. I'm glad that they quit many years ago. Passive smoking is as dangerous as smoking, never forget that folks...

Been out quite a bit since the smokin ban started and being a heavy smoker (40+ p d)i have noticed that i havent been smokin quite as much,well,apart from last week when we went to Leeds on an all day sesh.

Generally i can do 20 on a sunday afternoon and last week i think i did 6/7 which is a good thing is it not?

Anyone else reaping the benefits of the fag ban?

As a smoker it would be the perfect time for me to give up but i like my fags

Smoking ban where I live is great in my opinion... it is so much nicer to go out.

It makes a difference in the demographics of the bar/club thou. The more educated/diverse the clientele, the more likely they follow the smoking ban. The poorer/less educated clientele bars defy the ban on purpose, so the dive/redneck/hick/white trash bars all smoke anyway and the cops don't really want to waste their time.

It is kinda silly to have law that can't be enforced but it has improved things anyway.

Went for my first 'after the ban night out' on Thursday

Started at 2 at the thirsty scholar so was sat out and sheltered by the railway arch (not too bad).... after a trip round the science museum found an ace pub that served proper Chinese food... the owner said she'd be getting in some patio heater things for the outside soon....so might just have found a new local ha! The new Hilton building was the next stop... Cracking views and worth it for a quick trip, though expensive and although the lift is bloody fast still a pain in the bum when you want a quick cig... Finished up at the Kro bar opposite the uni, good pub for smokers...out back is mostly covered, with a fair amount of space and the heaters work well.

Not a bad day/night out, especially as I was only going out to meet a mate for one pint.

i spent a long time out the back of kro bar smoking recently on my own,after being errm,helped out of a tribute band gig mite have a look up the hilton when out down there next saturday
