Does Burgess still sound like Ian Brown?

Ermm.. since 'Some Friendly', (which i think got more kudos than it deserved on the back of the baggy wave) I can only recall one great song which was 'One to Another'. A blatant Stones rip-off with some lovely piano.

The Charlatans seem to be celebrated more as 'survivors' than 'movers'; and at any festival you will get a good show. For me, they are in the same bracket as Supergrass or the Manics, i.e. solid, but not earth-shaking.

My interest in them has been rekindled by Rachel, who really likes them. They had sort of droped off my radar for many years.

I thought they were great at MvCII.

Country Boy is alright.

He's got a nice smile.

Wears cool badges.

Al - once in a club in 90' & 'White Shirt' (off of 1st album) was playing over system & saw this well fit bird with a white shirt on. Yep.. i pulled her, good 6 months du (ing) the do.. Even got her to go the Hac to see ACR with few of us i reckon a lot of people like the Mod aspect of their music, they do have that grounding in previous bands the guitarist n bassist.. Waltones etc..

Made a nice Christmas song with Saint Etienne.

Or was that just Tim alone?

I know a fair few people here like the Charlatans. Shugster and JG, etc, certainly go to see them whenever they're around but the Charlatans seem to have just passed me by over the course of time.

'Some Friendly' was one of the first CD's I ever bought but since then I've not kept up with them at all so over the past couple of months I've downloaded maybe seven or eight (they've done quite a lot, haven't they?) albums of theirs and played each one through.

And I can't remember a single song of note that's turned my head.

What am I missing?

Could someone please tell me what their finest moments are and I'll gladly go and revisit them, but at the moment it all sounds like MOR rawk to me. With an organ thrown in, natch.

I like the Charlatans - 'the only one I know' is a top tune as is 'north country boy' To me they are a solid group, never earth shattering or groundbreaking, but they have turned out a few good tunes in the past. Check out melting pot its a great LP

I had only their Cha-Cha-Cha album, 1995, and I threw the tape away straight after I listened to it.

Now I don't even remember what they were known for. Madchester? Maybe I should give 'em a second chance?

They are from Northwich I think. Technically another county.

i can vividly remember "the only one i know". life after high school.. oh, such fun!

"Tellin Stories" and "Us and Us only" are two really good albums...

There's a sequence of songs on "Us..." from "Impossible" to "Blind Stagger" which is probably their best collection of songs...

Oh yeah and Burgess' favourite band is, of course, NewOrder, hence his habit of, er, borrowing NO song titles; "Weirdo", "Senses"

Agree that they're prolific but without too much real quality IMHO...

Wonderland had some good stuff on it, And If I Fall, A Man Needs To Be Told & Love Is The Key. Always had time to listen to Opportunity Three from Melting Pot too.

You've gotta admire there staying power. Did anybody honestly think back in '89 that they'd still be shifting a bunch of albums and concert tickets 18 years later? I always saw them as the also-rans. Shows you what I know!

Like Al though, their continued popularity confuses me. I recognise almost all the tracks mentioned above but none of them would inspire me to even download an album for free. Struggle to see how they've survived the likes of Cast, Ocean Colour Scene and other "pleb-rock" luminaries. Wouldn't best against them outlasting the current intake of similar shite mind you (The View, The Fratellis etc etc etc).

Loved 'Some Friendly' when it came out all those years ago, but it fitted the scene perfectly at that time. Also went to see them at Cambridge Corn Exchange and it was one of the wildest gigs i've ever been to. That was then though. Subsequently, although they've had the odd decent single, i've never cared for them too much to be honest. Went to see them in Leicester a while back and was left uninspired by the performance, spent the majority of the gig in the bar.

Not really taken much notice of anything since North Country Boy which was shite. I've bought albums every so often but they never got played much.

Bought Some Friendly when it came out and took a passing interest in all the other albums since. However until last year I had never seen them live. They rocked the Apollo and imho they were by far the best thing at MvC last year.

Will certainly outlast the current crocks of...

I've got Weirdo on Shine 1. that's it. nowt all else.

I like them. Best song -Sprosten Green-Fuckin class!
