I was listening to XFM Manchester earlier today and the DJ mentioned that there would be a ‘Tony Wilson Day’ sometime in June. I can’t find any more information on it. From what I think I heard, 200 people will be invited including the likes of Alex Ferguson (so I don’t suppose we can expect an invite!). Has anybody else heard about this?

Why are XFM Manchester doing something like this? Considering their knowledge of Manchester music is limitied to Oasis, The Stone Roses. The Charlatans, Blue Monday, about 3 Smiths songs, and the odd song from Doves now and again, and is a radio station which sold its soul to London by allowing their playlists to be dictated by major label wankers and the cockney music press. Shame 
I've got no doubt that chief twat Manford will be there. The same man who said that Arcade Fire's "Keep The Car Running" sounded "like Joy Division". Clearly showing he had never heard either band at any point.
I do love the small elitist approach that XFM Manchester is taking to this. This sounds remarkably like XFMs first birthday party, when for weeks on the radio they hyoed it up as ASH (fucking shite) were playing life cafe. and precisely no one cared! So for Tony Wilson day, they'll invite "5 lucky winners" to come down and hang around with the XFm DJ's and watch The Futureheads. What a load of bollocks.
Incidentally, at last years Summercase I met a couple who won a competetion to be there on XFM Manchester. They were the most boring, clueless pair in the world, who unsurprisingly, never went to any gigs. I called the bloke a "fucking prick".

Calling them a Manchester station is pushing it, Considering they seem to be doing all they can to kill music in this city. Here is a station that steadfastly refuses to promote new, local talent (apart from patronising sessions late at night) and instead p;laying the MOR drivel that it does, stuff like Snow Patrol, The kooks, KT Tunstall, Razorshite, The fratellis, mized with a lethal dose of boring Britpop and so called "Manc Classics" which is the same old shite. Oasis, Stone Roses, This Charming Man etc etc, and ludicrous overhyping of the so called next big thing, which at the moment is The Courteeners and/or Lightspeed Champion. One is a Cockney band and the other might as well be. Manchester has so many great bands around at the moment (The Whip. The Longcut, The KBC, Carlis Star, Air Cav, The Vanguard) and so does England (Maps, British Sea Power, Art Brut, Exit Calm, Dragons etc) who NEVER get played. Because the cliched crap that populates Virgin and Radio 1 takes priority.
So having a Manchester station (and they're based in Salford anyway) which is doing this, when Wilsons ultimate legacy isnt a closed down nightclub or a bankrupt record label, but a platform for bands to be seen, heard and get noticed, having a Radio Station which basically opposes this is an issue.
My God Liam. You're nearly as grumpy and cynical as me. I'm old enough to be yer dad, but at least I usually try to hide some of the cynical side

And that's my equivalent to the radio station that I listen to on the weekends [when they actually play music and not talk so damn much].
Well, the good news is tht XFM Manchester (and Scotland) is going under. GCAp Media is selling the analogue license for it, and if it cant be sold it will be closed. Apparently, GCAP Media are losing £800000 per annum on these "non core" stations outside of London.
Its nice to know that the good people of Manchester have been turning off in their droves.

lightspeed champion aren't really a band though are they, it's that bloke from test icicles - hope of the states' mike siddell is guesting on violin on the live show btw.
