On Question Time the other night, brian paddick kicked both Boris and Ken's arses.

I must say, its been the most ludicrous electoral campaign in this country in a long time. Considering all Livingstone did do get the Labour nomination in 2000 and then all the kerfuffle about him being kicked out of the party and then getting the nomination for 2004, and now I believe the Labour name or logo isnt on any of his literature.

I cant predict a winner in this one. it all depends on whether people vote on the personalities and policies (apparently all the candidates have some, not that you'd know it) of the candidates, in which case Livingstone should win, or if people use it as a comment on the state of national politics, in which case its Boris by a canter.

Then again, it could be so clase that it all comes down to 2nd preference votes. And I imagine that most of Paddicks votes will transfer to Livingstone, so my prediction is Ken to win on a 2nd count. Boris to win by a landslide in 2012.

Dont hold me to it though.

Ken Livingstone and/or Brian Paddick are obviously the best men for the job but, writing as a non-London resident, I'd love it if Boris won, just for the comedy value of it. He's probably done nothing much, he is a politician after all, but he introduced the Congestion Charge which was a very clever way of paying for the introduction of the post of mayor. As for crime - would Londoners accept zero tolerance and how bad is crime really in London? Transport - buy a bike or have a walk. Poverty - I don't expect a politician to bother about sorting out poverty. Improved economy - very much in the hands of big business these days and I think Ken or Brian is better equipped than Boris to bring in new investment and sustain current London business' interest in staying in London. So, if I was a Londoner I'd vote for Ken rather than Brian as I prefer Ken, but I wouldn't vote for Boris as I heard him speak about the team he would install and I think his team may cost a lot of money and not do very much. But I don't have to worry about it as I'm not a Londoner.

Well, according to one poll, others are saying to close to call. Incidentally, every opinion poll of this nature allows for a variance of 3% each way. So it could be 50/50, rather than 53/47, although it probably isnt. I'm sticking with its too close to call at this point...

It probably is a protest vote, but saying that, Ken has been mayor for eight years now and people are probably a bit fed up of him and fancy a change.

If Ken wins today, and stands in 2012, I would predict a landslide against him. Just the way these things work...

I'm at a bit of a loss to see why anyone would want to protest against this government anyway. Doing alright, aren't they?

Labour's long term this time is largely due to them losing one more election after they should (they would have won the Things Can Only Get Better election if they'd refrained celebrating until after they'd actually won).

Well, if Labour had won the 92 election (which took place in April) they would have been held responsible for Black Wednesday in September (which at the point was pretty much inevitable, although maybe not on the same scale) and the consequences, which meant they would have lost in 97, and they might not have ever recovered from that...

They didnt inherit utter crap either. In fact, Major and Clarke did a remarkable job under the circumstances to repair the economy. So much so that Labour retained Conservative Spending Plans for the first two years in office. So its not like Blair and Brown came in and immediatley had to fix the economy...

Debatable, but what I should have said was that they took over from a very very unpopular party. This bought them a lot of love in the early days, in the eyes of the public.

Oh absolutely. When Labour won in 1997, they also won the 2001 Election at the same time. But you dont have sky high opinion poll ratings if you dont have a good economy (Look at how Brown has fallen away since the heady days of last June), and you cant change an economy overnight...

Anyway, back in London, turnout is up quite a lot on last time, so it probably is too close to call.
