I had an argument at the weekend that went like this:

(Watching Britain's got talent)

Me: This bloke's shit Not Me: Why is he singing in an American accent? Me: That's the least of his crimes NM: He's from Wigain - that's the worst thing he could do. Me: Lots of good people sing in American accents. NM: Lots of shit people. Me: The Beatles sang in American accents. NM: (being an enormous Beatles fan) No they didn't. Me: Yes they did. NM: No they didn't. Me: Yes they did.

But they did, didn't they?

Why is that? Why do people who say maths often sing in American?

Well?

Did They?

Gimme a song, and I'll check.

Most of them.

Apart from the skiffle ones and some of the ballads

Get Back, I wanna hold your hand. All of them.

Always thought it was a general accent. In between Scouse and Yank, not really sitting in either camp, especially not Scouse.

now this is singing in an American accent. Suicidal wankers.

Might be something to do with Scouse accents sounding a bit like Yanks. Always thought (and it's been said many a time in print) that Ian McCulloch has sounded very Sinatra-esque in the past, yet remaining and sounding distinctly Scouse.

I'm not a Beatles fan, but I don't think they sounded particularly American. One of the things that people kept saying about them at the time was that it was a really 'British' sound.

If you listen to songs like 'Til There Was You' and the more 'shouty' vocals of 'Please Mr Postman' - they definitely don't sound American.

I think it's fine to sing in an American accent if you're American. If you're not, then you're probably either trying to appeal to an American market or you're just a pretentious wanker...

careful microchip. I have never understood why non-Americans try to sing an American "accent" or not having one at all.

For me, if I am concentrating on how I speak, proper enunciation etc, I really do not have an accent or it is lessened.

Now if I take breath and just relax, I will have an American Southern accent, y'all. My mother is from Pittsburgh so I can also do a Pittsburgh/Midwestern dialect. Don'yt ask me how-I have never figured it out.

Accent: 1.Something other people have 2.Something you don't have until the first time you hear yourself on tape.

TBH, being from the bog-isle, I should STFU, C+W is massive here, and the radio is FULL of Jamesy from Cullybackey, and Seamus from Ochnapoughal (3 miles from ballygobackwards Co.Kerry), all singing like they grew up 50 yards from "the Beale"

everyone has an accent.

The funniest people are those who say they don't have an accent. They normally have really forced, plummy received-pronunciation and get all snooty about how they're right and everyone else is wrong.

Generally a 'neutral' accent is best in an increasingly globalised world and doesnt make you look a tit when you go abroad.

generally a neutral accent would be something along the lines BBC/RP English. Rather like that spoken on the world service, or the talking clock.

So that would be an ENGLISH ACCENT then!

Californians generally aren't seen as having accents here. I think it has to do with the widespread accent in TV and movies, that everyone thinks it sounds natural. This was a topic of discussion many times when I was in the Corps... (but of course, i'm right and everyone else's accent is wrong:laugh: )

One thing I always wondered about, and Digi might be able to help with this one, are singers like Fat Bob. How is it, in his songs his lyrics are clear and understandable... but as soon as he stops sing, I understand fuck all of what he's saying?

You might be right on that score. But if you talked to a Bostonian or even a New Yorker, it's likely that they'll say we have a "West Coast accent" (whatever the hell that means...)

Or it could simply be the east vs. west coast rivalry rearing its ugly head...

The Stones sang with an American twang on many of their songs. I'm a huge Beatles fan, and I can't think of any of their songs sung with an American accent.

'Polythene Pam' and 'Across the universe' are good examples of the fab four singing in pure scouse.

Get Back? Hard Day's Night?

Still, by far the exception rather than the norm.

Gimme stoned beatles over boyband beatles any day.
