The Bush Legacy

This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

So, with a mere 78 days to go until he's forced to leave office (allegedly), this gives us ample time to discuss what the legacy of George Walker Bush is to the world.

Good:

Countless Priceless Family Guy moments.

Bad: Global Economic Turmoil. Global Insecurity. Move towards environmental catastrophe increased reliance on foreign oil in the US, which contributed to the rise in Oil Prices Scientific Research into medicine held back The Clean Air Act The PATRIOT Act, quite possibly the biggest incursion on Civil liberties even imposed on a so called democracy Control of the media leading to a fearful and cowed population "we're getting reports of an unspecified terror warning" 1.7% overall rise in Unemployment (now at 5.4%), following on from continuous decline when Clinton was President.

So, not a great President then? But then again, what would I know?

Any other contributions?

You defend Bush, but you still cannot state anything postive he has done.

I also notice that at the time you said it wasnt a ocmplete collapse, well I think you just might have been proven wrong on that one..

Extraordinary rendition or subcontracted torture, take your pick..

Didn't the other guy make the single worst decision by a US president? Was the rest of his presidency that bad? This one has just been a disaster from start to finish.

Oh! Having a war then giving big money contracts to your mates and no-one else however better placed to rebuild.

Positives:

  1. Increased military pay (Clinton years had most military members in poverty levels).

  2. replaced military gear (most aging from the Korean War era) to modern day standards.

  3. Implimented a federal plan to oversee the failing education process in the US (granted the NCLB policy has many problems, but it paved the way for federal intervention and accountability)

  4. Humanitarian aide to Africa

  5. Immediate response to 9/11 brought nation together

  6. No attacks on American soil since 9/11

  7. Policy for open discussion between international banks to track transactions aiding terrorist organisations that had before gone under the radar.

  8. Created Homeland Security (again, has its flaws but has closed a large gap in our national security)

These are just some off the top of my head...

not to mention the actions in the ME (Invading Iraq/Afganistan), but those can only be properly guaged years from now to see how it all pans out.

Bush has many flaws and has made many poor desicions as well. His main failure as a president is not keeping citizen morale up throughout his presidency, which is the main job of a president.

Somehow people are still lined up at Starbucks for thier $6 coffee... when the line ceases to exist, then I'll know we've hit a true collapse.

What a load of bollocks.

Increased military pay? you mean in line with the inflation he's caused as a result of his ridiculous oil policies?

Immediate response to 9/11? You mean sitting there reading a book, and then flying around the country seemingly at random? Guiliani did more to "bring the nation together" and even more remarkably, it would have happened anyway!

No attacks on American soil since 2001? Well thats an achievement. But what aboutt he attacks on American Citizens and targets worldwide since then? And how many before 2001? What, the Oklahoma bombing? the 1993 attacks? Before that? Erm... not a lot. Again, not an achievement.

Humanitarian Aid to Africa? Of course, because Africa has really improved since 2001... :uhoh:

Paved the way for Federal intervention in schools? How is that an achievement? What will it actually do? Its utterly meaningless.

Created Homeland Security? Bit late! And how much did that cost? And what has it achieved? Absolutely nothing. Just see how many actual threats there were to the US prior to 2001. And you know what, if Bush, had bothered to act in to the Document entitled "Bin Laden to Attack US using Aircraft in 2001" by increasing Airport and Airplane security by issuing simple directives to Airports and there staff, such a department wouldnt need exist. It jsut a way of creating an illusion and feeling of fear in America to justify the restriction of civil liberties and direct attention away from other acts of utter stupidity.

Policy for open discussion between banks to track transactions to terrorists. Standard practice in most countries you'll find. Nothing groundbreaking. CIA have been doing something similar for years and it never needed mentioning!

His main failure as president is Citizen morale? Well, i suppose thats one way of describinh economic collapse, disastrous foreign policy, failure on crime, failure on health care, failure on pretty much everything.

But hey, he replaced military gear. Because those super stealth aircraft used to bomb Afghanistan and Iraq were just useless. And by god, you'll need a super stealth laser gun to tackle suicide bombing Iraqis, or pistol wieding maniacs.

and thus the reason I didn't respond to your ignorant questions in the past. Much of your statements above are untrue, wrong and plain dumb. No reason to respond as arguing with you is a pointless and worthless venture...

Just be honest for once in your life. George W. Bush leaves NO positive legacy as he prepares to leave office.

The fact you question my facts when all you present is a defence which makes little reference to anything meaningful just shows how dumb you are. Despite what you say, you cannot offer anything that Bush has done which has left a positve mark on the nation.

So seeing as EdelBrock cant do it, does anyone else want to step up and defend poor Dubya?

interesting how personal feelings have now become facts? You might want to go back and check some of your so-called facts, they are all shoddy and full of holes....

Its not that Dubya hasn't had any positive issues in his term, its just that you don't wish to see any...

Errrrrm,,,,

He saved us from President ManbearPig Gore.

And worse....Tippa PMRC Gore as 1st chick.

Apart from that, he got rid of most of the rights Americans always bore the rest of us with like we care, and surely fucking Americans over is a good thing?

BTW, as for the little sign saying "this nation has now been terrorist free for 1500 days"[1]......stick around, he already had the new laws that let him deploy the army on the streets (NOT THE NATIONAL GUARD, real life, honest to god, can't shoot straight, can't tell friend from foe, US regulars)....so some time this week, or between now and mid jan, expect something interesting that causes marial law, and a moritorium on changing the administration.

I do not know why, but W Bush makes me think of Gorbachov.

You may ask, what have I smoked?

Take the time to think about it. Gorbachov had been seen as a sincere, faithful communist. All his reforms brought USSR to its implosion, end of the communist ere and Russian discredit. W Bush did almost the same with the USA. Sincere, faithful republican capitalist, his reforms brought the USA to a very nice financial collapse, so that, he had to behave like a communist leader to save the American banks!!! What a laugh from abroad, quite frankly. And whoever will be the next President of the World (sorry, USA), he will have to deal with the greatest international discredit the USA never had.

The problem with that though is that Bush did NOT bring about a finacial "collapse". It was started by mortguage issues, from a policy that began in the Clinton Administration, and then also backed by the Bush administration. Plus, this is a huge finaicial issue/problem no doubt, but far from an actual collapse...

unusual fact, but i might be wrong:

Dubya is probably the only incumbent president who never campained for his party/successor. he knows that campainging for McCain won't bring in votes, but rather lose votes.

I'd be willing to bet that LBJ never did any campaigning for Hubert Humphry.

But by giving money to the banks, he did what any socialist would have done. If he behaved like a true neocon (if you could get what it reads in French, neocon) you would have been in serious troubles.

Edel, this is not aimed at you, but W made of the USA something very unreliable, almost laughable. And from a French point of view - we have been said plenty of rude words during W's administration, what he has done to the USA is a gift to anyone who hate them. No need of anti-American propaganda. W Bush did all by himself.

American leadership is over. Take a look at the international issues during these last eight years.

  1. Almost every South American countries turned left.
  2. Impressive rise of Chinese power.
  3. Rise of the European Union as a political identity.
  4. Defection of your traditional allies.
  5. Discredit in Georgia during Russian intervention despite American promises...

And the list could easily be longer...

I agree with your list, but I don't see it so bleak... bear with me here. I think the US needed a "bad" president to do this:eek:

Again bear with me. After the Vietnam war no country has really taken in a real seriousness of the US military power. Granted there were minor scuffles and the arms race, but the Vietnam war really did some damage with credibility. Reagan brought in a refined tactics of negotiating, helping bring an end to the Soviet Union without battle happening. Bush Sr acted in the same way as did Clinton to an even greater degree. It came to the point that all countries figured that the US would always negotiate and never really back thier threats. The UN was a large paper tiger to boot. Bush became the "bad cop" that goes around accusing everyone and attacking everyone. It made countries dislike America, but at the same time showed that there is a possibility of US putting force behind the words.
The next president will have to fix relations, but at the same time, all the countries will be so relived that Bush is gone that they will actually start talks and solve issues that wouldn't have happened even in the past years.

In short, Bush did short term damage, but I think it will benefit the US and the world in the long run.

The duration of his presidency has virtually defined my youth. He has made american politics (already highly unpalatable in my eyes) thoroughly nauseating.

Bush is 99% evil, except he did help get a hell of a lot of HIV drugs into Africa, although under the strict terms of a counterproductive 'abstinence' approach.

And anyway, it was Clinton who started the momentum with that one...

The last time I stepped foot in the USA (in fact, the last three times) Clinton was in the white house. I've not been to the States for the entire time Dubya possessed the nuclear codes, was invading the wrong countries at the wrong time or setting mankind back 100 years by advancing the interests of those backward cunts the evangelical-hard right Christian brigade.

Have I missed much? :smoking:

That's a good thing...no???

well the county will be much better off without him if he would launch his fat ass and his family off into the ocean on some remote island and never return.

Positives or negatives, it depends on your viewpoint ...

  1. Bush got a lot of free amateur porn removed from the internet... :( Before you could just post you penis, nipples, or twat anytime you liked.

  2. Bush freed the Iraqi Shites from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein so they could be potential allies of Iran... didn't anybody tell Bush why the Reagan administration supported Saddam in the first place? :uhoh:

  3. Bush gave billions of dollars of borrowed money to US corporations, invigorating the economy for awhile. Apparently there is a well paid Republican right wing mercenary force which they don't bother to tell Americans about, Blackwater, much better paid and cared for than the real USA troops which are treated as disposable.

  4. First war in US history in which they lowered taxes.

  5. Kept most gays from being married. Actually, IMO the Republicans actually helped gay marriage by making it such a charged partisan issue.

  6. "Protected" Israel so Christians have a place to go for when the rapture kills everybody at the end of days. I don't really understand this all that much this but I really doubt that Bush really loves Jews all that much.
