Probably asked a thousand years ago too. Less chance than ever of it being true now, we no longer have a limited array of instruments.
Maybe he means pop music? That's not changed it's form since the 1940's
Maybe our society has peaked...it is hard to imagine any extreme that has not been attempted, or any mix untried.... maybe acoustic country acid house hasn't been tried yet.

I enjoy my meaningless, crappy job, listening to writing and talking about music all day. Taking photos has become a sideline.
I think music will develop and progress. If the current wave of 'popular' bands nowadays is anything to go by, there'll be alot of people inspired to do something different.
Art of any kind progresses and develops and music will do so as well in time...

Good topic this one (well done) and a question Ive been asking myself alot. I'd say the answer is probably YES.
Every genre of music has been done. Theres only 12 (7 if youre Chinese)notes in a scale. Top Of The Pops is no more. Video games are more popular than music. Oasis still sound the same as in 95. Theres not many bands that excite anymore.
When I look back at the 80's (although I admit there was a lot of crud) there were some fantastic singles. I think alot of folk are harsh of the 80's. It wasnt all Duran Duran, Thompson Twin, Kylie Minogue cheese. And even some of their songs werent too bad. Hits 4 compliation album (re 1985)is a great snapshot of music in this era.
Maybe Im just being nostalgic. I dunno.

Get the 'Atomic 80's' album, its a really good compilation. 80's music really was much more imaginative and quirky IMO.

Sorry, but you're fucking insane, or were born in 1989. The 80's were "my" years, my teens, my musically formative era. From it, I have carried New Order, and the ZTT record label's output.....everything else could burn for all I care.
This is an idiotic topic, music evolves and continues, the idea that it will suddenly cease is deeply dense. When orchestral music gave way to the chamber orchestral style, gave way to music hall, gave way to big band, gave way to rock and roll, gave way to pop, there was always some spastic who said "is this the end?" they were idiots then, they're idiots now. The only thing with no future is the idiot's ability to absorb new music. I too am becoming set in my ways, the difference is, I know it's me at fault and not everybody else in the whole world.
Gentlemen, you bring up an interesting topic.
As far as songwriting goes, you're right to note that there is only a certain amount of keys, pitches and chords available to use, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that we hear the same old song being recorded and broadcasted again and again and again...
New Order, Depeche Mode and Simple Minds do still delay the inevitable admittance from the music industry though... The last a-ha album was a disappointment.
