These measures have been mis-sold by the media, and by the government to a large extent, as a way of stimulating the economy by giving everyone a little tax break. What they actually are is an effort to prop up employment figures through the worst of the recession. The rate of job losses and business closures is frighteningly high right now; it's the biggest crisis that this country has faced in years. These are real attempts to keep real people in work. Contrast with the last time we faced such a crisis; when the government poured borrowed money into a failed attempt to prop up the Pound. George Soros must be pissed off that Brown is in charge this time. I'm not.
