i know a lot of us here are more partial to liking british bands, so i was curious as to what you guys think are some of the best music makers comming out of america? americans are known for a lot of embarrassing crap (boston and britney comes to mind), but surely they've done right?

Nothing against American music but there is nothing tickling my fancy from there at the moment ... At the Drive In were awsome ... Even though they were around long before anyone knew of them ....

My missus came home with the latest Puddle Of Mudd CD, which I thought was quite good.
Best American band ever are, of course, REM.
In yet another attempt to put some logic in my CD collection, I made a split between US and UK bands. It turned out to be close to a 50/50 split. Best American bands? R.E.M., The Pixies and yes, The Beach Boys. All of which I discovered in the late 80s incidentally...

The Smashing Pumpkins were, unfortunatly they don't exist anymore, but still.
I'm more into Brit bands I must say, don't ask me why, it's just the way it is. And I'm mostly into Canadian bands afterwards... like Our Lady Peace, Moist (and David Usher in solo) and, a little less, the Tea Party...
It's just that my musical tastes tends on the Brit-Alternative scene, which is not the typical US sound.. so it's pretty much the thing... Moby isn't a band, I know ;)

I like what fingers and Hubert Mickle have listed; that covers it pretty well, though I wouldn't list Presidents of the USA.

The only name I could add to this already burgeoning list that hasn't been said yet is Jonathan Richman, especially with his first incarnation of the Modern Lovers
And no, Limp Biscuit aren't the worst band in the world...that title belongs to the unholy trio of Boston, Journey, and Chicago

I was reading through and wondering if anyone would bring up David Byrne and his freakshow...quite enjoyable, I could listen to the Heads for hours, while I tire of REM in about 2.2 seconds...

and one other American band that nobody seems to have ever heard of...rappers with a vegitarian, pro-choice, pro-women's rights, pro-homosexual rights stand...the hardest, liberal mofos from San Francisco, Consolidated...but their older stuff is much better than the more recent stuff...apparently they are very jaded now...
fave american band? what about the killers? their song crystal was great but seen or heard nothing from them since.

i second that! he he. you've got to dig into the underground to find this stuff, cuz americans are capitalists and they are more worried about stats and money than good music. good publicity comes to those who sell, and my friend, we know good american bands don't sell in america like good british bands do in britain (í'm assumming this is true, dunno)
Taboo, Boston, Journey and Chicago were/are abysmal but at least they never pretended to be something they're not. They made MOR rock to be played on FM radio and in stadiums. Limp Bizkit pretend to be rebels who articulate the thoughts and feelings of alienated young people but they are actually a bandwagon-chasing money-making vehicle for their lead vocalist who is also a senior figure in their record company (Vice President, if I remember rightly). Sadly, many of the kids who like nu-metal are too stupid to realise that many of the bands whose music and merchandise they buy are a part of the system that they all claim to despise. If Kurt Cobain had lived to see the success of Limp Bizkit he would have still shot himself but I suspect that his first shot wouldn't have been aimed at his own head.
Spotnick, perhaps one reason why you haven't heard of 50% of the US bands listed here that's because the UK music press (and especially the NME) is obsessed with American bands. For example, the NME has hyped The Strokes for all its worth and if you have read any of the articles you can't fail to see why: they have hyped them so much because they want to be invited to their parties. The band is happy for them to tag along because if they had to stand or fall solely on the merits of their music they'd have fallen flat on their faces. The lead vocalist of Fischerspooner recently asked the NME whose cock he had to suck to get on the front cover but I don't think he got a reply because the NME was still in a 69 with The Strokes.
I was about to say Bush until I find out they are from the UK as well (I should have known)
No Doubt is not a bad band, I enjoyed prior stuff than the current though.
Aerosmiths did good things. Third Eye Blind were getting good (and I started to take interest in them when I saw an interview where the singer was stating Joy Division as their influence) Forving me for saying this, but the Red Hot Chilli Peppers did at least 3 decent songs (Under The Bridge, Californication and Other Side), By The Way is not bad. They are getting better, since New Order supported them, let's do it ;) Pearl Jam are also a good US band. Metallica too, well, not recently.
This probably isn't the thread on which to admit that I really like More Than A Feeling, then? 
Additionally, I'd like to nominate Rage Against The Machine. Great musicians, inventive, and Tom Morello is a superb guitarist.
I know that they probably sold over half their records to middle class kids trying to be "rebellious", but surely one can't deny that De La Rocha has written some great lyrics, and is very well-versed in political theory and the history of North American politics?
Most assuredly a more intelligent band than, say, Limp Bizkit.
Not a fave of me own, but CHIC have gotta be worth a mention given Barney's statement that his geetar style has been heavily influenced by their style. Plus mentions must go to THE STOOGES, IGGY POP and ARTHUR BAKER for the inspiration given to the Order & JD.

ooohh...I had forgotten about RATM....they were very good...
Don't think RATM would be fans of New Order. Remember seeing an interview where they said that keyboards were 'evil' ... They kind of had the attitude that keyboard/synths/computerised music wasn't 'real' music ... What a load of shit !!
