Iphone

I was in the pub on Monday and it was suggested to me I could probably now upgrade my phone.

So I rang up Orange, and they said that I was eligible for an Iphone on January 3rd. OK then.

So, the big questions are: What does it do? How does it work? And what apps should I get?

I know Dave Legge showed my his Iphone on the train to be honest it didnt make a lot of sense (my fault i hasten to add, i'm an utter technophobe) so in very basic terms can someone tells what all the fuss is about?

I am posting from mine right now. I use mine like a laptop. Plus GPS and phone. my wife just got a new one for Christmas. My kids play games on it. I use it to control my HTPC. It is an mp3 player or movie player for long trips. I use it to give presentations at work. email. im. video camera. really it is the all purpose device that has you luggin around no other device. i just read "enders game" on mine. If kindle is more your thing go ahead. if you jailbreak it you can use it as a router. I get faster speeds off 3g than dsl.

it is nice, but the capacity...just 16 Gb is too much small for me:\ohwell:

my lodger has one. he's always coming into the living room and trying to show me the latest useless "app" (that has to be my no 1 most annoying word of 2009) he's downloaded while i'm trying to read a book or watch something interesting on tv. god knows how many times i've lost the grasp of what is happening in True Blood or what Kirsty Wark is saying on Newsnight while he shoves some childish "app" in my face. i don't do keeping up with the Joneses and worrying about having the latest gadget. i'm with Jack Dee on this and agree that the only way an MP3 player, iPod , iPhone or whatever could possibly be of benefit to me is by sticking the earphones in,turning the volume up and not being able to hear what the taxi driver (or in my case my lodger) is trying to tell me

I think Jesusphone users are more annoying that the Jesusphone itself. ALWAYS have the fucking thing in their paw, pissing about with something or other (my fave thing ever written was a comment on an "app" which could work out your dinner bill...."I think you'll find that's called a calculator".

One of the managers in work has one.....I've yet to have a conversation longer than 30sec on it with him....hello? HELLO? He does live in a stone house, but his old phone didn't mind as much. He also, very boringly patched it to stop me sending things like "I think you need to reboot your PC"...which made the jesusphone reboot.

Anything that adds copy and paste at V3.0 has gotta be labelled as Fail.

My mate at work has one of them Raspberry ones and it's shit. It's got a stupid touch screen that doesn't work, and he has to go and stand on a hill beside our office in order to make calls.

The problem I have with people having an I-Phone is the following one: I have the feeling to be the “kill time with a real cunt application until I get a new app on my I-Phone”. Once the latest app installed, then, you are to be the “show a real cunt the brand new app on my mighty I-Phone” and feel sorry not to be able to close like an I-Phone app and disappear at once because you are simply real, in real life.

Chris and Jiphy are righteous comrades in arms, I see. (The latter also provides a late contender for BCD post of the year, I reckon!)

Any more want to cast off their false consciousness app and join our band of brothers/sisters???

I like the idea of having phone, mp3 player, video player, camera, video recorder all in one unit. Bar humbug to the iphone haters.

Also there are some cool music making apps which id like to use when the need takes me.

I like having my ipod separate from my phone, and a phone that makes simple calls without a lot of gadgets... but then i'm one of the last dinosaurs that refuses to text anyone.

With that said, there is one really cool app that has had me desiring an iPhone, and might work for Liam. Whatever the Apple equivalent of Powerpoint is, it can be completely controlled by the iPhone to any computer... and the possibilities of control go much further than simply moving a slide backwards and forwards. Wish I had that much control over my powerpoints at a moments notice.

Other than that 32 GB is way too small. I like having all my music with me, and just received the 180 GB classic for Christmas... I ran out of space with my 30 Gb (and that was with music at 128 kbs).

My ancient Sony Erikson K800i can do all that edel, has a full remote control suite for several windows apps, and almost anything in proper OS's. Again, the iphone far from being innovative, is in fact, rather backward.

And very easy to hack. If you are paranoid, don't touch it! it can be an outstanding spying device.

Inevitably, the evidence mounts. I don't want to state the obvious, but anyone who has ever used an "app" is an empty, finger-sniffing* dickface of the highest order. "Upgrade" to an Iphone; downgrade as a human being.

* - Yes, you sniff your fingers. You do. All the fucking time. They've been up your arse, haven't they?. I've seen it. Is there an "app" for that?

Personally. even application sounds too much like marketeerese, I'm a big fan of "Program". I only sniff my fingers when they've been up Martin's arse.

I've had one for a few years now and I love it. 8, 16, 32 G not enough memory for you? I use an app called http://www.simplifymedia.com/[simplify media](http://www.simplifymedia.com) which allows me to listen to all the music stored on my home computer over the 3G network through my phone. I can invite friends to link up to my iTunes Library and they can listen to everything I have on there and I can listen to theirs.

I also use Pandora, Last.fm and a few public radio streaming apps. I update my Nexflix queue, shop and compare retail prices from an Amazon.com app, find new things to make for dinner with allrecipes.com and of course, email.

I use something called Shazam to listen to and identify any random music playing in a bar or restaurant I might be out at.

The Wikipanion app is great for random trivial facts. For instance, if I want to know what the capacity is for the particular music venue I'm at, I just Wiki it.If I want to know all of the albums and bands producer Greg Fidelman has worked with, I can find out in a matter of seconds.

Urbanspoon and Yelp will give you ratings, price ranges and any other info you might want to know about any bars/restaurants in your area or any other given city.

as someone who has one & has used it (cf people that just whinge about it, or who are self confessed troglodytes) then i can say that it is an excellent phone

had no problems with coverage compared to other phones have had, the ui is wonderful, & the build quality is top notch.
