Two-Minutes to Comply

I've always loved two-minute pop songs.

Get on, get the job done and get off.

The best, for me, will always be Girlfriend in a Coma. I used to stand next to the record player with my headphones on and replay this one until my legs hurt.

Last night I noticed that Teenage Kicks by the Undertones runs at just over two minutes. Who would have thought that so much could have been crammed into such a short time? And what an impact both songs have had.

Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't) doesn't hang about, either.

Any more?

Get yourself a copy of drukqs.

Aphex Twin thinks 2mins is stretching it out just a little.

I generally got my teenage kicks out of a brisk two-minute wank. You'd be surprised how much mental stimulation I could cram into that frantic 120-second burst as well.

Pixies - 'Broken Face' (1 min 30 sec exactly)

I think 'Song 2' by Blur is even shorter than that. And about one hundredth as good.

Song 2 is 2:01 according to my iPhone.

Pixies' Tame is 1:55 though. Another goodie.

Too Much Too Young at 2:16 is a good outside bet.

As is the Fall's Mr Pharmacist at 2:21

Tindersticks' "Sweet, Sweet Man (pt 1)" clocks in at 0:41m. Not a second wasted.

Weren't most of Napalm Death's 'tunes' under 10 seconds?

More Undertones ones...

Here Comes The Summer (something like 1.45) True Confessions (1.55) My Perfect Cousin (2.37)

Primal Scream - Velocity Girl 1.21

Though it doesn't sound nowhere near as good these days as it did in 1987. Listening to it now i realise Stone Roses ripped it off big time for Made Of Stone

All good examples but how many acts have released anything as a single (with an accompanying video) in the sub 2 minute bracket in recent years?.....

From 2008, the sublime 'My Year In Lists' by Los Campesinos! clocking in at 1 min 42 secs.

Napalm Death's Peel session had 28 songs and a sub 15 minute running time (and one song was 3 mins!).

Or are we limiting this to music only?

"Battle" by Art of Noise is about 30 secs

Most of Connie Francis's songs were well under three mintues long. Many Tears Ago was shorter than two minutes...

Do we win £40 if we get it right?

"Perfect Pit". Or, if that doesn't count, probably "Too Late".

I seem to be answering my own question here, although not sure if there's many more folks round these parts who have bought any records released after 1989 ;)......One more example of a (fairly) recent sub 2 minute song fully released as a single with video (full of saucy office ladies). Indie disco favourite from 2006, The Rakes '22 Grand Job', total running time 1 min 47 seconds.

Oh yeah love this one too - I miss this band tho
