Is it going to happen in Manchester? Why are people in London and Liverpool so barbaric?
It means the discontent's been boiling slowly in society for a while and anything can trigger an outburst of public violence.
I live in Essex and am on the fringe of the mayhem. The next town up had youths throwing stones at cars. There were rumours that our town were going to get it (but thankfully not).
Its got nothing to do with the protest about police shooting a guy on Thursday and is purely about the aggressive youth on the rampage, destroying peoples homes and livelihoods, stealing and arson, in a copycat manor.
The police could do more, could do less. But theyre in a no win situation as they probably feel if they step in the violence will escalate further. Theres no water cannons cos their in Ireland and I think theres even a law preventing their use in England. Tear gas would be an option though. Seems theres too much red tape and civil rights of the criminals.
bring the army in? only if they are allowed to shoot the looters and arsonists, i say.
Great publicity for London hosting the Olympics next summer. 4 football matches are cancelled and I can see the weekend London Premiership games called off if it doesnt calm down.
But it just seems to get worse.

What I think is part of the problem is that the yoof of today simply have no fear of consequence, or no understanding of consequence. We all acted like knobheads when we were young (no Killers reference) but if you saw a copper you ran like fuck. Seems like knobheads stand their ground today safe in the knowledge that the police cant give them a slap and send them on their way.
All this is just the next extension of that. How else can you explain people posting pics of themselves on-line with big smiles and piles of stolen gear.

Probably started even before that but there was a telling comment today from Theresa May where she maintained we would not be using water-cannons as thats not the British way. Not only is that even more softly-softly but its also a kick in the nuts for the Irish whom we are happy to water-cannon.

It's not just Liverpool - it was Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol and other parts of London first before the inevitable brain dead copycat troublemakers decided it would be a laugh to jump on the bandwagon.
Do people not realise that it's also 30 years since the first lot of inner city riots in 1981? It's more than just coincidence, because there are parallels with that year AND 1985 - there were royal weddings in both years too.
And so history is once again repeating itself.
I believe that this time it was all premeditated - there must have been a few twisted types who thought that what this country needed was a fresh wave of civil disorder to mark the 30th anniversary of the first wave of inner city riots. They were just waiting for the moment to come to ignite the blue touchpaper.
Although this time around , I feel it's got fuck all to do with poverty or racial division and just sheer bloody minded destructive violence for the hell of it. And let's not forget, in some ways we as a society have regressed backwards since the heady days of the 1980s.....there no morals anymore with some people.... so they're now are more barbaric and disrespectful than ever, they really don't give a fucking shit about what they do and who they hurt.

I consider myself left-of-centre, socialist even to a degree, but I fear you may be right.
Something needs to be done long term though also. We need something in the education system which teaches these kids at a young age about morals and respect, I don't think there is anything in the curriculum anymore that teaches this [and if there is then it isn't bloody working]

The riots that have gripped London and swept other major cities in the UK are the product of a diseased culture that leads to violence and mayhem which ultimately only serves to benefit the ruling elite in its bid to eviscerate the middle class by manipulating them to demand their own enslavement.
Firstly, anyone who truly believes that the rioters are burning and looting to protest any legitimate grievances, at least ones that they are consciously aware of, needs their head examining.
A BBC video clip features audio of a group of drunk teenage girls describing how fun it is to engage in wanton violence and thieving. In a transparent and moronic attempt to justify their actions, the girls begin babbling about “the government….conservatives or whatever….I don’t know,” before responding to a question about why they are attacking local residents of their own community by snorting, “It’s the rich people, the people that have got businesses and that’s why all of this happened because of rich people.”
Those “rich people” include a local family-owned furniture store in Croydon that survived two world wars yet has now been burned to the ground, a charity shop that raises revenue for the elderly, and a cat rescue center based in Enfield, amongst scores of other homes, charities and small businesses owned by innocent and far from “rich” people.
To claim that these disaffected youths are the vanguard of some organic revolutionary movement is completely asinine. If this is a genuine backlash against the establishment, why are the mobs not congregating around Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament or Buckingham Palace, the real culprits of Britain’s economic degradation. Why instead are they busy filling trolleys full of tennis shoes, mobile phones, along with plentiful supplies of booze and cigarettes from tiny local off-licenses?
The rioters are composed predominantly of nihilistic, aggressive, vapid and intellectually castrated youths that have come to represent the very term “broken Britain”.
This is like a bad zombie movie – it’s the rise of the idiots. The plague started in Tottenham. It rapidly spread to other areas of London, and soon the hordes were rampaging around major cities nationwide. But these zombies weren’t scavenging for brains, they were in search of JD Sports chav-wear, 40 inch TVs and iPads. The police stood by and watched. The petrified public welcomed troops on the streets, curfews, more surveillance and control with open arms. Thanks a lot, idiots.
The cause of this mayhem cannot be traced to any legitimate political grievance, it is almost entirely the product of a diseased culture, fostered by multinational corporations and the celebrity-obsessed entertainment industry, that brainwashes young people to aspire to lifestyles they can never possibly attain.
The social decline of young people becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as a result of constant media fascination with demonizing youngsters and presenting them with a putrid diet of “heroes,” vacuous footballers and drug-addled musicians, whose behavior makes impressionable kids think that life revolves around being constantly trashed, engaging in amoral sexual conquests and proving their manhood by pointless displays of animal-like aggression.
MTV-manufactured rap icons, movies and video games have trained an entire generation of disadvantaged kids to grow up as wannabe gangsters, marauding around town with their jeans half-way down their thighs in huge mobs intimidating the public. Rampant consumerism is also to blame. Deprived kids on benefits cannot afford the iPods and laptops they are told they must own to be accepted by their peers, so an opportunity like this cannot be wasted. As the Guardian reports today, “Where we used to be defined by what we did, now we are defined by what we buy. These big stores are in the business of tempting [the consumer] and then suddenly these people find they can just walk into the shop and have it all.”
This army of Clockwork Orange-style droogs are then played off against the general public who, suitably terrified by the media’s incessant hyping of the problem, openly welcome troops on the streets, more surveillance, curfews and whatever else is necessary ‘just to keep us safe’.
But if the last few nights have proven nothing else, they have proven that the police and the authorities cannot keep us safe. Almost every eyewitness who described the violence and looting said the police sat back and did nothing.
The establishment only benefits from allowing the chaos to spread because the call from the public for a more brutal response gets louder and louder. Now Parliament has been recalled for one day to ensure the opportunity to pass more draconian legislation that will only impact law-abiding people is not passed up.
This is how the middle class is habitually manipulated to support the very police state that is ultimately used to oppress the middle class itself. It’s also a perfect example of pressure from below – the cultural cultivation of an underclass of yobs who are let loose by the system to generate the crisis it needs to clamp down with an iron fist.
We all need to wake up and realize we are being played off against each other by an establishment that craves the kind of pointless rioting we have seen over the last three nights, because it creates the perfect pretext for the establishment to entrench and expand its power in the name of safety and security.

This country sucks - it's rotten to the core. Years of maladministration has resulted in this. Blame also the liberal do gooders and political correctness peddling sycophants - the very people who have all but eradicated corporal punishments and discipline in schools - happy to indulge in serial procrastination whilst everything around them falls apart systemmatically - and THIS is the legacy of what we have to face.
Likewise, the police aren't allowed to use force (water cannon / tear gas) unless in very extreme extenuating circumstances...so what the fuck are these then? Child's play? A picnic in the nursery? Whatever happened to applying the short sharp shock? They (the police) have become gutless onlookers, relegated to bit part players as a result of excessive government tinkering - and fuck, does it show. Youth today have everything they could possible wish for and yet they still have an attitude problem - what does that say about them - and how well we have been in educating them?
I am a lecturer myself at the local technical college and even I know for a fact that there exists a mindset that simply does not want to acknowledge respect, principles or basic human values. This was never the case 30 years ago when the Toxteth/St Pauls/Brixton riots happened. Back then there was, I felt, a genuine grievance about the way the police and communities did not really see eye to eye, coupled with poverty and unemployment. You cannot say this about the depressingly materialistic, selfish, uncaring and relentlessly nihilistic society which we have now.... all of the points you have listed above have rightly contributed to polluting the minds of the young as we can see all too clearly for ourselves.
Back in the 70s and 80s there was still at least values such as ambitions and aspirations and a duty to make something of your life, regardless of what class or background.... now it's been jettisoned, and deemed almost unfashionable, in favour of all out reckless abandon and greed, materialism and apathy....at worst, a complete indifference to the well being of others.
This is why everything is coming home to roost now - the years of dismantling of any kind of moral structure to society, helped in no small part by countless ineffectual politicians bleating about "education", "community" and "family" and yet doing nothing to bring those who routinely debase these values to justice but preferring to give them cushy luxuries and pandering to their every whim.
No wonder the young generation have been fucked up beyond repair.
And this is the harsh truth - what we are seeing being played out in all its naked ugliness. Dystopian, for sure.

I am amused by the number of people bleating about this who were also complaining about the heavy-handed policing tactics a few months ago.
I fear this is the problem. People are happy to assert their "rights", which too often seem to be the right to indulge in ant-social behaviour, damaging communities and scaring people. By today's twisted logic, attempting to instil social responsibility in youngsters by educating them, or simply by kicking the living fuck out of them, seems unfashionable.
It is entirely compatible with left wing beliefs to expect responsible and lawful behaviour from citizens. The difference between left- and right-wing solution is education.
The country won't sort this out with just a big stick, although one is certainly required in the short term. Any attempt to do so will turn very nasty indeed. It's not very fashionable to talk about community groups and youth workers at the moment, as Cameron found out with his condescending 'hug a hoody' nonsense. But you can't get away from the fact that the on first hot days after we spent the winter slashing budgets and decimating the Probation Service, the streets are burning.
