used to use ahead nero to record cds but it doesnt work on xp, tried to do a couple last night but using windows meedja player it took me nigh on two hours per album must to copy them to the hard drive - is there an equivalent of ahead nero i can use for xp?

I don't really know much about xp, so I have no idea at all if it would work or not under that OS, but have you tried EAC (Exact Audio Copy)? Its a free download somewhere on the net and its probably the best prog for audio extraction (lots of extra error checking). As a free download its worth trying, I'd have thought.
I can furnish you with a copy of EasyCD Creator 5 if you like. Along the same lines as Nero and definately works on XP.

I use CDEX to rip them from CD to WAV files on my hard disk (free download too, forget the URL but just bung it into any search engine), Nero definitely works on XP, you might just need a patch.
