Decided to watch the empty-headed Academy Awards last night (the war coverage is pretty much nonstop, very draining, so I needed a distraction) and was expecting to see Attorney General Joseph Stalin, erm John Ashcroft, rush the stage if Barbara Striesand came within 5 feet of a microphone. I had heard over the week that Oscar producers were "encouraging" the participants not to make political statements (and anytime you're encouraged to keep your mouth shut, you know it's just gonna spell trouble).
Well, good ole Michael Moore (who is not 100% right about everything, but is funnier than most conservatives) got up there and threw that all out. If you didn't catch his comments, he basically called President Bush's "election" by the Supreme Court fictious :) the reason for going into Iraq fictious
and called for an end to the war ![]()
Now, whether you agree with him or not, thank God that we Americans live in a country where someone can say that and only get booed, not executed. In a time where you "can't say anything bad 'bout the Prez, or you're helping terrorists", it's nice to know that free speech triupmphs any day. THAT'S how we beat the terrorists, folks.
Adrien Brody (winner for best actor) humanized the call for peace by talking about how, whether you're for the war or against it, we all need to support the troops, and talked about a buddy of his stationed in Kuwait.
All in all, nice to know we've still got some measure of freedom left in this country
