...and why?

i can't decide. i love them both in different ways. overall, i might have to vote for DM. but in a way, i think i prefer OMD's Dazzle Ships (hence my icon) to even my favorite DM album - Violator.

i have to think about this one before i vote, though.

DM.

OMD haven't get the excellence of Blasphemous rumours, Enjoy the silence, Never let me down again or Strangelove

... your quoting some material there. Add And Not Tonight and Everything Counts and you can see why OMD are not up to DM.

Let us never forget Saiing on the Seven Seas ... a song so poor it would not make it onto the shelves at Netto as bog roll.

Depeche Mode for me..

I like a few of OMD's song (If you Leave, Dreaming, some others I don't remember), but it's nothing compared for my love for Depeche Mode in the early 90's.

Unfortunatly, Martin Gore lost it.. Ultra and Exciter had great tracks, but overall, they are not as good as MFTM, Violator and SOFAD, altough SOFAD shown signs of going down the hill...

For some reason, they are not as good as they used to be since Alan Wilder left the band..

Now you have Martin Gore & David Gahan solo projects.. !

Depeche fucking Mode. My fav. band, ever. HOLY SHIT SOMEONE LIKES THEM OVER NO!

Deepeche "Fuckin" Mode got good between late 80s to mid 90s (but their earlier stuff was well dodgy. As was theirleather skirts period). Auk Kestrel Man-Hoovers were really good for about four albums then they went to America and blanded out.... ( the free single that came with their Junk Culture album though has to be one of the most ludicrously over the top pieces of "goth hammer horror" music they have ever done. Try listening to it alone in an empty house in complete darkness, whilst off your face - you will die of fright, I swear! )

Both bands have their moments, but sadly I thought Yazoo were far more entertaining: truly the Vaudeville Couple of electropop.

I gotta agree. The early shit makes me cringe. It appears they got it going from Black Celebration.

Pretty much sums up my feelings about OMD exactly, they lost me after the album that had So In Love on it, Crush I think it was; I've never had the urge to buy a Mode album in my life, I've got quite a few of their singles though.

Funny you mention that free single that came w/Junk Culture,"The Angels Keep Turning (The Wheels Of The Universe)" ; great description of the sounds. Not surprisingly, the late (for this board), lamented Martin Gray loves this song as well; it's definitely one I'd use to clear out an ongoing party.

Depeche Mode. For reasons too numerous to mention, although the songs mentioned above are spot on. Best years, Black Celebration up to SOFAD (with an honourable mention to Some Great Reward, for Blasphemous Rumours). Go through phases, though, where any of the other albums could be flavour of the week/fortnight. Agree that they are perhaps missing something since Alan Wilder left.

Looking forward to the solo projects, MLG's especially if Counterfeit was anything to go by. :cool2:

I can't vote on this....I've heard maybe 6 DM songs:

Enjoy the Silence Personal Jesus People are People Just Can't Get Enough It's No Good Dream On

And for OMD, the only one I know is that one from Pretty in Pink

OMD: I have two of their albums: Crush and Dazzle Ships. They sound like two completely different bands on these .

Depeche Mode are alright too I guess, they've done somme good singles and albums such as Violatoir and Songs of Faith and Devotion. For a couple of years they were absolutely huge over here and college radio just could not stop playing them. (Never Let Me Down and Enjoy the Silence got most of the airplay).

Dazzle Ships is where it's at (see my icon).

Alan Wilder was such a huge part of the band's sound. from what i've heard, it seems that he was essentially the one who did everything other than the melodies (particularly on Violator and SOFAD, on which he was apparently very in charge of the sound design). plus, he was the one who transformed Enjoy The Silence from a slow ballad into a pop song.

mine is actually Dazzle Ships. i still haven't heard Organisation or Architecture & Morality, which are supposed to be amazing. their debut, self-titled album is SUPERB. it's probably the one you should get next - Electricity and Almost alone make it worth having.

Okay, so it has a rather ponderous title, but my fave OMD album is Architecture & Morality; best balance between the huge singles like Souvenir and Joan Of Arc plus moody album tracks like Sealand. The combo of the jangly guitars and harsh synth bits on New Stone Age gets the album off to an interesting start as well.
