After Edson Arantes do Nascimento, called "Pelé" (yes, the Athlete of the Century), my vote goes to Maradona - I remember to see him playing when I was a child. His career could be even more brilliant if he didn't get that much drugs, in my opinion...
2nd best soccer player ever (after Pelé, of course)

don´t choose maradona because we´re talking of football players here, not gods! he´s from outerspace, the universe is his home. pelé is the best from earth, no doubt about it.
pelé? yeah, i remember him. pelé came in second place after diego in the fifa competition of "the best player ever" before the world cup. but as he didn´t win (because people are intelligent) they gave him the "fifa family" award (?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?). so he´s the "fifa family" best, how cute! ![]()
as for the drugs problems, i thought we were talking about football here. if not we could start talking about the homosexuals facts around pelé, or the fact that his "friend" garrincha died without him doing anything about it, or the fact that he "sells" himself for any price to anyone that gives him a lot of money, etc, etc, etc.
before talking about life examples choose a player that is an example. for example..... errrrrr........ hmmmmmm....... there must be one....... errrrrr.......
lineker? good guy, good player, but not the best at all...... errrrr.....
cruyff? sure not, where was he on the 74 finals against germany? then on 78 he said he didn´t come to argentina because of the militars when everybody knows he didn´t come because of the other holland players didn´t like him due to the fact he signed a special contract with adidas so he could use a shirt with only 2 lines instead the regular 3 all of the team had on 74. (check the images)
platini? what did he win again?
maybe di stéfano was the one that had it all. great player, great person, low profile, he won it all with the real madrid.... oh, by the way, he´s argentinian too :D
I don't know if Maradona is god or not, or if Pelé is gay... The only thing I know is that Pelé WAS the best soccer player EVER. No doubt about this, sorry...![]()

you brought the drugs issue to the table, not me
besides you´re 25 years old. how could you remember pelé playing? at least did you see an entire game of pelé or only the highlights that we always see on tv?

i respect your opinion. but not everybody is so strong. in fact most of the argentinian players were crying. it´s hard to loose on a final game when the referee gives an imaginary penalty on the 87 minute.... anyway, germany deserved to win on 90. it was the best team by far. i admit it with no discussions.
it was a hard world cup for diego. he played the last 5 games with his left ankle with the size of a watermelon. also italians (from napoli) whistled on our anthem. add that penalty.... it was just a mix of emotions together. and it´s true he never wanted to loose on anything :D
Maradona is simply the greatest footballer ever. He was an entire team in one man. Pele might possibly be the greatest striker but that's about his limit. He was certainly the foil for the greatest team ever known to man, but then, my Grandma could've probably notched up a few goals in that line-up.
Carlos Alberto was interviewed by an English newspaper before the England-Brazil game last year and had a right dig at Pele. He basically said, what was Pele actually famous for? MISSES! The shot from the halfway line in one World Cup, which missed the target entirely. The famous feign to shoot when he made the keeper look a right mug, but Pele still went on to miss the goal. And a third miss, which might've been the Banks save, not sure. And that's coming from Carlos Alberto!
But here's another Pele is crap link anyways
Pele's a great ambassador for the sport (although he did once whore himself to the New York Cosmos in a league which didn't even recognise the concept of a 'drawn' game) but, as an all round footballer, nobody has ever come to close to Maradona himself.
And that's coming from an Englishman who still thinks he's a cheating little c---!

Sure Al ? - we know he was good with his hands, but could he man mark ? Could he defend set-pieces ? He wasn't all that good in the air, and not exactly renowned for his tackling skills, Obviously once he'd got the ball you'd never get it off him, but I wouldn't go as far as to say he was the greatest footballer ever. And yes he is still a cheating little cunt.
Best footballer ever ? Hard to say, I've only been around for 37 years. Video footage doesn't show the mares that older players must have had from time to time. Di Stefano, Puskas, Matthews, Pele, Beckenbauer, all names that spring to mind.
Mind you, what is "great" ? Best technical skill ? Biggest influence/presence ?
I certainly can't think of more 'complete' footballer I've seen in the modern game. There's never been a better playmaker. And what bloke of 5'6 is genuinely good at set-pieces?
I'd like to see someone come up with a better example. Instead of just regurgitating the name Pele over again - in the World Cup five years ago Suker brought a save out of Schmeichel from just inside the halfway line. He brought a save out of undoubtedly the greatest keeper in the modern game. And he hit the target. And the commentator at the time said it was "nearly as good as Pele". Who'd failed to even hit the target, like, thirty years previously. Hmmm.
Yes, I've seen some ENTIRE games with Pelé on TV - not only Brazilian team, but with Santos, too. He was THE MAN. And comparing the 2 careers Maradona's is really inferior. Pelé has 3 World Cup titles - 56/62/70 (and he played in 4 World Cups), 2 World titles with Santos and 2 South American titles (also with Santos). And almost 1.000 goals more than Maradona.
And about the "Fifa competition" you said... wasn't that one that people were just voting on a website? Here in Brazil most people didn't even know the existence of that "votation", and most people here don't even have internet access. Do you really think that if Maradona has got more votes on that kind of "competition" it makes him better than Pelé?
Maradona should be happy as the second one, since there are many that can even be considered better than him: Garrincha, Zico, Tostão, Cruyff, Beckenbauer...
Part of genius is originality. I'm not suggesting that Pele was the first person ever to shoot from the half way line but comparing Beckham's goal 30 years later is like saying the latest techno/house track sounds more sophisticated than the proto stuff from the mid eighties. Phil Thompson made the point about Dalglish's chip over the advancing keeper to win the European Cup saying, today it looks normal but at the time it was innovative and it's only now that it looks commonplace that the originators are seen out of that context. That said I'd still choose Maradonna, if only because I'm more aware of what he did in the context of the time and therefore unqualified to pass judgement on Pele. Still think there was a good chance that his physique wasn't unaided by steroids or the like. Definitely the best in the last 25 years anyway.
Maradona is the best Lowlife ever ![]()
You say Maradona is better than Pele, you must be a basketball or baseball specialist ![]()
I can talk about football cause I played football for many years as a profissional and I was an excellent player but not marvellous as Pele ![]()
Maradona had a great time on 86 Cup in Mexico. But after that what did he do ? Used drugs ![]()
Pele was perfect and a profissional, the best ever ![]()

Maradona is a god? That explains why he said "it was the hand of god" when he scored against England
...
No comparisons, please...
ZIDANE!!!!!!!... well maybe not, so maradona is my choice; I was too young to see both pele and maradona, but watching clips of both players and taking account the styles and strength of their opposition at the time, maradona edges pele

Pele was not perfect; he was a great professional, but that doesn't make him the best ever.
The Pele/Maradona debate could run forever. If I had to make a choice, I think Maradona would just about shade it for me.
Although the legend that is RALPHIE MILNE runs them both close. :D ![]()

I'm absolutely not joking, Pele is my favorite soccer personality right next to Zidane, but he's not better than Maradona

so, my brazilian friends. i heard what you had to say. and that is "pelé was the best ever because maradona did drugs". so what´s your point? maradona didn´t use drugs to improve his abilities. he used cocaine, which barely lets you speak, less play football like he did. so the drug abuse is part of his personal life. let´s don´t bring it to the discussion because, as i said, pelé wasn´t exactly the best example to follow...
now could you bring a non-brazilian to say pelé was the best? for now you´re the only ones saying it. on the other hand people all over the world are saying maradona was the best. even englishmen who are maybe the ones that hate him most! so i don´t understand why you keep "dribbling" the truth...... ![]()
one more thought. it was easy to play with names like garrincha, didí, vavá, zagalo or tostão, jairzinho, rivelino.... than having batista, enrique, burruchaga or troglio, calderón and dezzotti by your side!!!!!!! we´re talking about the "best player", not the "best team". brazil of 1970 is the best team ever in a world cup, no doubt about it. because all of them were great players. most of them could be on a "hall of fame". certainly not the argentinians around diego. and that counts to admire him more for what he did.
We say that cause we won 5 times the world cup,we're the best only.European and america have the money we have the best players ![]()
Maradona used drugs during 94 cup maybe he used in 86 when he was playing marvellous and out of normal.
English men invented football but don't know how to play it ![]()
Joe Montana...oops, you lot are talking real football...
Eric Cantona? oh wait, that's right, we just discussed this one not too long ago, what did we decide, he was the biggest flake in football?
I never saw Pele play, well actually, I may have, my friends and I used to go watch the Dallas Tornadoes who were in that "league" that Pele was in...but I can't remember that far back...saw a few highlights of the 86 Cup, and Maradona was quite impressive...but remember, we only got the highlights, so I'll just shut up and watch you lob this one back and forth...

would just like to bring George Best to the table (though I will be keeping an eye on the beers whilst he's there ;))
not tested on the world stage but surely showed enough to suggest he was the best not to play at a world cup?
