Funnily enough, i'm actually a big fan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Been to see them a few times, got all their albums. But for sheer poetical lyric writing genius, Billy Corgan is no Steve Malkmus. ;)

Adore had too many songs on it that could've been b-sides, and, on Adore and Machina, the instrumentation sounded too polished and computerized. Songs from Adore and Machina sound a lot better live, especially Everlasting Gaze and Ava Adore, in my opinion, since I've seen both those songs, on TV and in concert, performed live about 3 times.

I'm not as bad as I used to be, though. When I was 16, at the height of my pumpkin obsession period, I had one of the walls in my room wallpapered in pictures I got off line of SP, I used to bootleg "Pumpkin seeds," a pre-gish studio recording, I waited 4 hours in the cold to meet them, skipped a day of school for their concert, reviewed Machina (and the Cure's Bloodflowers as well) for my school's paper, and listened to them constantly on my headphones, not to mention weakly philosophized and debated with friends, who liked SP instead of the one-hit wonders of the moment Blink 182 and 3 doors down, about the hidden "meanings" and interpretations about song lyrics and about which album had the best instrumentation. When they broke up, I was devastated. Luckily, I'm not as obsessed, and I've given more listening time to the Cure, NO, PSB, and metallica.

Not really. It was bound to happen, and I needed other bands to listen to. I was into the cure when I was 14, and a while after, NO and PSB fell into place. Anyway, Zwan pretty much is SP with better backing - two rhythm guitarists and Paz instead of D'arcy, although Melissa Auf Der Maur wasn't bad when I saw them live. Not bad to look at, either. As far as Metallica goes, or as far as I'm concerned, their career ended with the black album and was revived by S+M briefly. St. Anger has no guitar solos on it, thus, I didn't buy it, for the main reason I listen to them, and have been since some kid gave me a tape of their's a while ago, is the guitar solos.
I got out Siamese Dream again last night and listened to it from start to finish - what a fucking great album that is, all those layers of guitars and then the quiet acoustic bits. I thought Adore was much underrated - a really different album, but still with some good songs. Machina has been gathering dust since I bought it and listened to it a few times. Zwan? Mmm, still making my mind up - though they might be finished before they get started - I prefer the heavier edge of the Pumpkins.

Lyrically, SP was better than Zwan, but the instrumentation is far better on Mary, Star of the Sea than on Machina I. And Siamese dream is an excellent album - the first one I got by them in fact. Before, I listened to RHCP - still not a bad band, and One Hot Minute still rocks - but Siamese Dream completely changed me. If you want more of that guitar sound, look for Gish.

Agreed. Siamese Dream is the Pumpkins' finest moment. Especially the song Mayonaise. Even 10 years on it still gets me every time.
