Rare Rehearsal/Demo Tape On eBay

This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

In 1988, I was a simple bricklayer working in Box, Wiltshire, UK. Just around the corner from the executive houses I was building was Peter Gabriel's Real World studios.

Incredibly, I just wandered in there one lunchtime to find an empty studio full of instruments, where New Order were recording. The engineer from that recording session gave me a cassette.

The cassette is labeled A&M Studios and has "*New Order* (Various Takes)" typed on both sides. On Side 1 is hand-written "Ideas from Recording etc Jun/Jul etc". On Side 2 is hand-written "Rehersal [sic] - 25/4/88".

Side 1 starts off with some rather tinny jamming, samples, etc. However, the sound quality soon improves and there are lengthy jams, short snippets of conversation (presumably from Peter Hook and Barney Sumner) and various samples of instrumentation, including a couple of rough takes of complete songs. Most of the music has no vocals, but there are a couple of tracks with vocals. Not being a huge New Order fan, I'm afraid that I can't say whether these are early rehearsals of known songs or unreleased rarities!

Side 2 consists of numerous remixes of Blue Monday (I know that song!). They all differ in as far as they have odd samples, loops and synthesizer parts incorporated. It is also interspersed with some rough jams by the boys (and girl!), some bass lines by Hooky and a bit of noodling from Barney.

This tape is totally original and a one-off. I have not made any copies, so it is a totally unique piece of New Order memorabilia. You can find it at:

anyone heard of this before and know what it might contain?

Unfortunately it's being sold by someone who doesn't know anything about the band and what the tracks might be.

Depending on who gets it we may never know.

Technique rehearsals seems the most likely although I'm not sure why Blue Monday should be on it.

Blue Monday 88 version I would guess.

Tom - make some copies and flog them as well, it's gonna end up with a collector otherwise, and none of the genuine hardcore will ever get to hear it! Plus you will make more money.

At the moment i am the highest bidder so if all goes well we will soon know what it contains :)

It would make sense for other NOOLer's not to start a bidding war on this one and hopefully the eventual winner can make these tracks availble to all!

of course i will make it available to all if i win that is !

i would be only to willing to trade copies for other new order electronic stuff its only fair :)

well I wish you good luck with the auction!

Blue Monday 88 version I would guess

that's a possible, although I thought that would have been done without the band involved, by Quincy Jones and in the US not Real World.

Maybe the tape has/had some mixes of BM88, then the band taped rehearsals over some of it. This could explain why there are handwritten additions to the labels.

The going bid is 5.50 which isnt going to land it so lets all cross fingers and give moral and other support to Fac 51 on Saturday..!

Hi guys just thought i would give you an update

The current highest bid on the New Order tape was £5.50 and i put a maximum bid of £30 on it of £30.00 to secure it , this was outbid today by someone bidding £31.00 on it and putting a maximum bid of £40.00 on it , i have bid again with £41.00 with a maximum bid of £50.00 to try and secure it , hopefully this will get us the tape and i can start to trade with you guys for other New Order/Joy Division/Electronic stuff :) but if it goes past the £50.00 mark i am afraid i won't be able to bid any higher , If i am outbid again i will post it on this forum so that someone else can step in and try

nothing like this is ever won or lost this early.

A whole load of last second bids are where this gets played out.

Well hopsfully the last bid was a rogue one and £50 will be good enough , if not like i said i will announce it on here so another member can have a crack at it

I wonder if Barney & the gang bid on here for rare new order stuff ?

The way the price has gone up today i reckon this will sell for at least a ton. Only pray its someone off here that win it, then at least we can weed it etc. I by the way am not bidding- need money for next weeks babyshambles gigs

I'm sure David Sultan is going to win this auction and we will never have the chance to hear these gems.

first time poster, many time conjecture-er--

do many people who claim to not be that familiar with new order refer to peter hook as 'hooky' as the seller has done?

something to think about if we aren't getting a tracklisting and with the proliferation of the basement tapes bootleg.

of course, theories aside, it may very well be technique-era recordings.

I, for one, would gladly pay upto £30 for a copy of this. Surely we could club together and create an account with enough wedge to buy it? Just a thought.

I'm still waiting to weed :) I hit the required amount. maybe someone moved the (goal)posts? :)

Its at 51 quid today, same person who took it above 30, but if you look at his buying profile you wouldnt say its NO or nothing..!

sorry guys it has gone over my £50 limit now i am afraid it is up to someone else to take over on this one

i would say we could club together and buy it but how would we share it , i mean besides making sure all those who want a copy gets one who would keep the original ? , we should really have a NOOL bittorrent link where we could all share on

I don't think anyone can beat David Sultan in an auction, not even a collective of NOOLers.

it's quite possible David already has something very similar as it matches one of the tapes he bought previously (remember the box of tapes)

Well speaking as the guy you outbid last night, thats a bit too much money wouldnt you say, seeing as both of us are Noolers?

Steve Lea wrote: Well speaking as the guy you outbid last night, thats a bit too much money wouldnt you say, seeing as both of us are Noolers?

So, you're the gent from South Africa?

Where were you before last night, though? Would you be saying the same thing had you won? Maybe you would have, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

And I was lucky to have the support of plenty of fellow NOOLers, so even though it came out to be twice as much (or 5 quid more), it's spread among more people than it would have been otherwise.

I'm assuming that you had to bid over 200 in the first place to exceed sisterray72's offer...but isn't sisterray72 also a fellow NOOL'er, assuming his handle history matches one that's been featured fairly prominently? And who's to say whether barney69 doesn't post on here as well?

Yes I am, the only one who posts from RSA.

Well I was on the beginning of this thread, that's where I was! Yes I think I would be saying that, the winning bid was at 112 quid until ten seconds to go. I'm not a great collector of NO stuff, JD maybe, but this was just a way to pay back something I had received out of the Nool community. I have no idea who sisterray72 is, but I had spoken to barney69 -he is a Nooler too - and to the seller trying (unsuccessfully) to secure a copy of the tape for Noolers. It was just to stop something rare and relatively high value disappearing into private hands like they so often do. Anyway, good luck, you won it fair and square! There's a thread on DR saying we've got more money than brains...

Which was the exact thinking behind the 'consortium' bid that won. I understand that you're upset about having it nabbed off you, but you'll still get to hear it AND you keep your money. The group bid was made with the sole intention of sharing it among the community and to try and ward off a well known collector that would not have been so generous.

As it happened, that competition never came. If anything, you're the bad guy for hiking the price up at the last moment. :D

Well I was on the beginning of this thread, that's where I was! Yes I think I would be saying that, the winning bid was at 112 quid until ten seconds to go.

Not quite what happened...here's what the bid history shows:

Auction ended at 13:47:58 PST.

samhabash GBP 205.01 Feb-19-06 13:47:40 PST tltwatw GBP 200.01 Feb-19-06 13:44:36 PST sisterray72 GBP 110.00 Feb-19-06 11:06:09 PST barney69* GBP 72.55 Feb-19-06 13:17:18 PST

So 3 out of the 4 are NOOL'ers, and I bet sisterrray72 is too. I guess being a NOOLer doesn't guarantee very much. :(

Did anyone have the forsight or cheek to actually email the seller and ask for a copy? I did and he never replied

So was it a NOOLer that won the tape ? , if so will i be able to get a copy seen as i was the original bidder trying to get it so that the team could share ?

Have a look at the bid history again and get your facts straight. The winning bid was 112 quid until a few seconds to go - thats what it would have cost me to beat Sisterray's bid. It cost you 205.01 to beat my maximum bid, thats something else entirely. I know nothing about a consortium, you certainly didnt let it be known on this thread or on this site anywhere that I can see. At least I alluded to what I would try and do in black and white earlier in this thread. I'm not too fussed about not getting the tape for personal ownership, I believe I said that already. I just hope you guys arent disappointed with whats on it!

Yeah, you're right, but you could have let me have it for 117 :)...but you were concerned by being outbid by Sisterray...so you set a fairly high maximum.

You're right about that. I guess "tltwatw" is secret code for "Stephen Lea" that I had missed in my carelessness. But since I know who that is now, I can see that you clearly posted earlier on in the thread.

I think if I had it to do all over again, I probably should have said something here, but eBay auctions are tricky affairs, and revealing your (good) intentions early has a way of backfiring in unexpected and frightening ways...and it may have turned out completely differently.

I'm not too fussed about not getting the tape for personal ownership, I believe I said that already. I just hope you guys arent disappointed with whats on it!

You mean, I hope *we* aren't disappointed with what's on it!

Well, I *do* plan on making it available to all and sundry...and I already have had about 15 people make good on their pledges (with others on their way)...so in fact I've saved you well over 100 pounds. Feel free to contact me privately if you want to discuss the matter further!

Well if you knew I was from SA then you checked out my e-bay profile before you bid and I am fairly regular on this site and the only one with a .za. By the same token I dont know you as samhabash - I did start trawling through the Californians yesterday but there are so many of you f***ers! Its not an issue... This sort of item is a bit different to what normally will get raided at the last moment on e-bay, I think I know who the collector is you're talking about, but there's a good chance it will come to a Nooler in most cases.

Interesting exchange on WIM about this tape, with the seller being a major player.....

maybe in the future, if items like this come up again..

you could re-organize a team privately, but publicly invite people to donate with the intention of sharing later on..

that way, hopefully there won't be a conflict over these items. of course a certain amount of trust would have to be involved.

but i'm glad that there is an effort to preserve these recordings and release them....i know there was another bootleg of demos that was released on 'dimeadozen.org' that i got, and then i saw a copy of it on ebay, and i was glad that people had shared it, instead of me having to pay money for it..

(hi sam, long time no talk...)

I have received this. Expect about a week before it's banged up to snuff.

To illustrate what I'm talking about when I say "bang into shape", here's samples of the first song, both in "raw" form and something similar to what the mastered version will sound like...

Loveless as transferred from demo tape

Mastering candidate version of Loveless

I'm not doing the mastering, someone else has graciously volunteered to take on this task.

[albeit with pedestrian knowledge regarding mastering]- the candidate version sounds great!

Oh wow. Could I ever bliss out on that Loveless version there! That's why I love rehearsal tapes; just a jam out session that gives versions that I would love to hear.

Probably not Loveless by "All The Way" and the jamming stuff is likely from the '84 rehearsals that got out a couple of years ago.
