YOUR FIRST NEW ORDER GIG?

Go on>What was your first NO gig?Mine was 83,the Low-Life tour.Not the first time I'd been in THe Hacienda,M/C,but the first time I'd seen a gig there.Also first time I'd been to a gig when the crowd are pogo-ing around you.Being an uninitiated spotty oik who was used to seeing gigs at the Apollo with seats in front of you,I was pogo-ing against the tide,and I was fucked after half hour.I sweat that much,you could have made a pan of chips! Always remember after a few at the front were dragged out,Tony Wilson come on..."Come on come on..get back.They're a bunch of ugly bastards anyway!" Favourite song of the night,toss up between Temptation and This Time Of Night,which I heard them sound-checking early on.

Anyway,despite losing two stone,I got up to the front and I've still got some decent photos of the gig.If I get access to a scanner,I'll post them on the site.I was THIS close to Gillian...oh you can't see my hands. That's what I said to her!

1989--red rocks amphitheatre in morrison, colorado; probably the best outdoor venue in the US. it was my second concert ever and my first at red rocks--i was 14 and elated. my dad drove my friend and i down for the show (we lived in a small town in the rockies about 1 1/2 hours drive to the northwest) and waited in the parking lot for us, which was awfully good of him.

the sugarcubes were good and PIL were great, but when NO came on i danced like i've never danced before; if you've ever been to red rocks you know the stairs to get up and down to the amphitheatre are a bitch, so after the show we were tired and aching and had to make it down the steep path to the parking area--but it was worth every minute of it. i can't recall everything they played (lots of technique, of course, and i remember songs off substance--but i was still only in my second year of new orderness and i was only 14, so the set list wasn't as important as the experience for me), but i do remember it was the first time i heard happy mondays' hallelujah. they played it right before the order came on stage and my first thought was 'what gracious creatures created this immortal sound?' or something to that effect.

listening to new order, watching the sun set over the mountains to the west and the city lights of denver shine to the east below. a perfect evening. red rocks may not have the intimacy of a smaller venue, but for sheer beauty and intensity it can't be matched.

Glastonbury 1981, they played before Hawkwind.

Tower Ballroom Birmingham 2nd October 86 except i had to leave before the end to my eternal regret.The mosh was unstoppable.Seeing em in the flesh for the first time was great.Had tried to get into the Birmingham Powerhouse gig back in June 1984 but was refused entry as i was under 18.I was gutted!

I went to see them twice when i was 15 years old back in 1985.King Georges Hall (Blackburn)and Preston Guild Hall) Barney and New Order have been the love of my life ever since.:)

Hull Tower Ballroom March '81.
15 years old. Now 39. What can you say when you see them live, especially the first time. Even now they still send a tingle down the spine when they come on stage. Though there will be, one day, a last time !

The last time was Belgium 30th June at Werchter. Any one got recording of said as sound quality of set was excellent.
Though the getting in was shambolic and as usual it rained earlier in the day.

Belgium really nice place. The four "C's" Chocolate, Churches, Crossings & Cows.

I memory serves me it was a friday and I couldnt concentrate at school all day cos that afternoon we were off to see the Order. So excited was I that I made sure we left early enough to be at the venue a full 3 hours prior to the gig, which wasnt met with complete satisfaction - I thought my brother and my mate would have wanted to stand outside and listen to the band soundcheck Run Wild and True Faith!

Much waiting around later we got in and we position ourselves right up in front of Hooky's amps. Serious ear-damaging territory, and not the best sound quality. Next to us was a NOOLer who I remember asking how much he paid for his NO shirt: $40. Behind us during the gig in his Celtic shirt was Jeff, but I didnt get to talk to anyone else from here.

Oh and the Chemical Brothers were opening. They were good. I like a lot of their music. A lot of energy, a lot of noise, a lot of dancing. A bit tedious as it seemed to be one long song played by two men on keyboards - and it was! A few dickheads with dodgy punk gear got on me nerves when they kept feigning scared screams when the video screens showed strange looking clowns. I momentarily forgot about the Chems because Mr Dicken/Albrecht/Sumner or Joy Division/New Order/Electronic was watching at the side of the stage.

Lots of standing around and getting squashed in the waiting period after the gig. Some yank dickhead (no offence) tried to stop me from getting back to my place on my way back from the toilet. I tried to explain to him very politely that he was a dickhead who wasnt going to stop me from getting back to my spot but he didnt understand, repeating "You can either go around that way or that way, but you're not getting through here." Cock.

Anyway, the crowd got more rowdy when the Order arrived. But I loved it, squashed up against the railings. They opened with She's Lost Control, which no one expected. Ramblings about how they could have picked a better set list aside, it was brilliant. I was ecstatic to have seen the Order because I didnt think I'd get the chance - I was incredibly fortunate they chose to play so close to where I live. I loved the experiance and cant wait to see them again (hopefully).

I couldn't believe I was "there" with them on stage… Everybody just dancing around and me dancing too… I don't remember clearly what's happened, I was giving a look sometimes at the stage and think "yes, they're here for real !" but then I thought it might be a dream after all…

And the second time in may 2002, Zenith, Paris…

15th of december, 1985 Rotterdam. Sweet memories! A certain Mr. Sumner nearly being refused entrance 'cause the doorman didn't know New Order. Great set, lots of my favourites: AIIWIW,Egg,AOC,Sunrise and Face Up. I couldn't speak during the one hour ride home.

Oakland 85, same venue as this years gig. Great setlist, lousy crowd. Barney before the encore: "you probably don't deserve this!" Got Blue Monday and Sister Ray for that, made me quite happy.

Wembley Arena 10 December 1987, 16 years old. My first ever gig by anybody, and still my favourite gig ever. Supported by Primal Scream, in their very early days - I seem to remember Bobby Gillepsie stumbling around drunk, and nearly/actually (can't remember which) falling off the stage. Highlights were Face Up - somewhat surprisingly, as on disc it's never been one of my favourites, but a blistering live version - LWTUA, which at the time was rarely played, and Sister Ray which was even rarer and seemed to go on forever! Still sounds good on the recording I've got of it.

The other highlight was EGG. If you listen to the tape, the tempo changes substantially about a minute and half in..Hook had wandered across the stage, literally barged Gillian out of the way and cranked whatever rhythm gizmo they were using up to.. well, 11 or wherever _he- wanted it. Cool.

yep i was at that gig although it wasnt`t my first.Lovely Sunny Easter Sunday as i recall.Got the coach from Rugby with my Bro.Touched ,BLT (the old live version) and Vanishing Point i remember as highlights.Shame we were in bloody seats!.Still got up and danced though.

Blackburn Kings Georges '85 I too was at the NEC in '89. I was in the standing bit but had smoked too much so ended up watching it lying on the floor with a hand over one eye (true 4am stylee) Was the gig any good?

I have a picture on the coach holding the concert t-shirt....I look about 8 and as Brother Jeff rightly predicted I was only about 3ft I'll have to dig it the photie and everyone can have a good laugh, and like Johnny I was up in the seats for the gig as well, which is just as well - cos I would have been murdered down the front.

Talking of being down the front, this NEC gig was a personal nightmare. I'd bought this studded belt a few days before the gig, and absentmindedly had got it holding up the obligatory baggy jeans. Security wouldn't have it, so I spent the entire night with thumbs in jean belt loops hoping they didn't fall down......and got battered to fuck down the front being unable to free my arms! Some currant stubbed a fag out on the back of my head as well. Nice.

Shug, I was down the front, after seeing em the previous night at the SECC. Phew !!

Mike - i too went up to Glasgow for that gig, was i right in remembering there was a bit of aggro down the front just after 'Gerald' played??

I caught them in Seattle, Washington state, US in 89 (I think) in a small venue called the Paramount, a theatre built for stage plays. The acoustics were great and so was NO.

That concert was my first real date with my wife who I have been married to for 18 years.

I just discovered this site since my 18 yo son just came home with "Sirens" and thought I would like it.........He knows I am a NO fan, but he got is since he is now a fan.

No, son was not concieved on that night, yes we all love NO!

Great site and I have a lot of reading to do. I am rediscovering a lot of good NO I have not heard for awhile. It still sounds great!

They played the Tower Ballroom three times in four years, and admitted it was one of their favourite venues.

1983 - opened with LWTUA (dedicated to Rob's birthday). James were support.

1985 - fabulous set that started with 6 new songs from Low Life, very late encore of Confusion after half the crowd had gone. Stockholm Monsters were support.

1986 - possibly their best gig ever, certainly Gillian's favourite. Storming set topped by Weirdo and Perfect Kiss as the encore. Support from The Wonder Stuff and Happy Mondays.

If only they could go back there!

Footnote for the traispotters out there.....we parked at High Hall before the 85 gig and walked up to the Edgbaston venue, just out of nostalgia's sake as it was approaching 5 years since Ian's death.

Perfect Kiss as an encore at Birmingham 86? My copy only has twelve songs, and TPK aint one of them.

they were admitedly hit or miss live but so were N.O!

However, The Wake have some great stuff recorded so for me they were one of the best bands to support N.O. My other choice will be ACR.

i think mine was sept 82,futurama deeside.i am sure the WAKE were on at that too?? i know i enjoyed icicle works .After that i went to 3 hacienda gigs in the space of about a year,but not sure if one of them was actually before futurama

Bradford, Saint George's Hall '85 or '86, can't remember, i was 16, all the gigs seem to blur into one after a while, do remember the leeds and manchester contingents having a mini riot in the town hall square afterwards!

Have to say I prefer the '86 Tower Ballroom gig version of Temptation (being my first NO gig). The fact it was followed by Ceremony puts it in NO folklore for me.

Aaahh, there we go ! I was 17 (darn, time goes by so fast), it was in Leuven, Belgium, 17 December '85 @the Manhattan Club. Gosh, it was absolutely astounding !!! A performance that i will never forget. And i mean it, being a die hard fan for years already through all their records but not being able to see them before, sadly. After that, being rather a shy person, not quite the club or gig goer at the time and let remind us that was prehistory : no web, a.k.a. no global information, i wasn't so well informed as these days even if i managed quite well back then (i'm livin' in the countryside of an already little land you know...), i then had to wait 'til 12 Oct.2001 @Brix.academy in London to see my all time Heroes again. Saw them five times since that, last was this past June @Hyde Park. Didier

My first NO gig was at the Tower Ballroom in Birmingham. '83 or '84, just before Low Life. The Stockholm Monsters supported them, and if I'm brutally honest, blew NO away. They were fantastic, and looked well cool, kept swapping instruments. I think they had just relaeased Kan Kill.

I remeber someone in the crowd once spitting on Barney, and he offered them onto the stage for a rumble, but they didn't go. It may have been this gig, or another time i saw them at the TB. Dunno really. But NO in my experience, could be a bit dodgy live. They always had a massive football following. The students had the cure and smiths. The people had NO.

Dublin SFX Theatre January 24 & 25 1986...It was fu$%ing freezin'.Bernard told us to complain to the promoter about the lack of heating in the hall,it was baltic!Changed my life for ever.Last song of the Saturday was'Atmosphere',couldn't believe what i was hearing.Still have both gigs on bootleg tape...and the rest as they say is history!

One of those nights was my first gig also, Stockholm Monsters were the warm up act and were in a worse mood than New Order that night ! Still one of my favourite New Order gigs and Stockholm Monsters became one of my alltime favourites

July 2, 1983 at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit.

Drove up from Cleveland with some fellow "New Wavers".

They opened with EGG!

Other highlights were Ultraviolence and Dreams never end.

Was at least 100F in the club that night.

First NO gig was 17 December '88 at the GMEX in Manchester. They played Fine Time off the then unreleased Technique album. Barney made a comment about their samples possibly not working. Everyone sang along to Ceremony.

My mate reckoned he saw Hooky in the crowd during the support which was from ACR and the Mondays. Will always remember Bez in oversized jumper shaking his maraccas.

First time but definitely not best NO gig I have been to.

That was my first 'un as well - my first gig ever in fact. I spent most of it in a strop as I was bored by my pisshead uncle and his mates who'd taken me (we'd been in the pub since midday, I was only 14 and hence wasn't drinking). I'd never seen so many pissed young people in one place before, and didn't understand how this little cult group could pull so many punters. And they didn't play Blue Monday which pissed me off no end.......

....how times change, eh?

Roskilde Festival 1993. Great concert as far as I remember. I was hoping they would play Sister Ray since Velvet Underground performed earlier that night or possible the night before. Well, they did´nt but they did play Special for the only time so the gig was a great experience anyway.

Heh heh!! You can have as many requests as you want mate. I can't wait to play again.Last time I started the set off, using the pub's amplifier set, I started the set with FINE TIME.The F**king bass rocked!! I remembered thinking "I've got to get me one of these!!!" Hyde Park, 05. Yes, I know, but give me a break--I'm 16, after all. I thought it was amazing, but my opinion is probably a bit biased, and understandibly so.

yeah i was the Roxy gig too.one of my favourite NO gigs. Do The Ostrich!.Only found out recently that is a Lou Reed song.At the time i thought it was a new New Order song and although it was great live i couild never imagine it released.

Jan 86 - SFX hall in Dublin - both nights. First night i went on my own 'cause 'billy-no-mates' had only one friend who wanted to go & he would only go for the second night.

Highlight: actually was Blue Monday about 3-4 songs into the set on the first night - best live version of this song & Bernard belted out the lyrics while 2000 of us jumped & 'sang' along:D

NYC this year. Tried to see them on the Republic Tour, but no dice.

GMEX 1988 - supported by ACR and Mondays - fantastic times

I first saw New Order at Northampton Roadmenders Club, February 1981. Stockholm Monsters (the singer threw his bongos into the crowd then asked for them back at the end of one of their songs) and Section 25 supported. New Order played a 45 minute set and were simply amazing. They looked cool, doomed but not doomy, and they sounded magnificent. I seem to recall they had a quad PA in the hall. Some locals at the front who had no idea who they were started heckling Bernard, trying to put him off. Unfazed and ignoring them, they crashed into Ceremony. Wicked. It was so long ago but seems like yesterday. I've since seen them loads over the years and I reckon they're still as good today, but you never forget the first time , do ya?

Haus Nied in Frankfurt 1984.

Went from London on one of those coach/gig/hotel packages. Amazing experience.As nobody knew many people on the coach there wasn't a whole lot of communication.The coach(s) dropped us off outside the venue and everybody just piled into a little bar on the corner. In no time everybodys connecting.

Remember the band being a bit taken aback by the rowdy UK contingent in the pit. They played Hurt my fave all time B-side and encored with In a Lonely Place, which I believe must have been named after the film of the same name. Spookily that film is on Sky movies now !

Ended up that night in a gay club populated by US servicemen. Bit of an eye opener for an 18yo heterosexual!

My first gig was at the Berkeley Greek Theatre on September 18th, 1987. It was their first of two nights at the venue and New Order and Echo & the Bunnymen were swapping headline slots each night on the tour. On the 18th, New Order was second on the bill in between Gene Loves Jezebel (horrible) and the Bunnymen (superb).

The highlights of their set for me were the bookends. They opened with Touched by the Hand of God (which I hadn't heard nor even heard of) which sounded otherworldly and had a quite a strange effect on me as I had spent the weeks leading up the gig endlessly speculating on what the opener would be. The final track of the night was a stomping run through The Perfect Kiss in which Barney referred more specifically to his "pleasure zone".

One of those nights was my first gig also, Stockholm Monsters were the warm up act and were in a worse mood than New Order that night ! Still one of my favourite New Order gigs and Stockholm Monsters became one of my alltime favourites

Chilly February evening in 1985 at the Caley Palais in Edinburgh. Wake as support. Edinburgh was never their most responsive audience but a memorable first gig nevertheless. Mostly Low Life material which I hadn't heard before. Highlight in retrospect would have been LETS GO. Experienced 2 more gigs up till 1987 then an 18 year sabbatical until Hyde Park this year. Thankfully they still managed to make my spine tingle.

My first gig was at Alexandra Palace 98' for the new Years eve show. Awesome night. The highlight had to be when Bez came on stage for Blue Monday. I was an inch away from picking up Hooky' drum stick that he through ou after the song, I could'nt bend down in time to pick it up!!!!

I also saw them at Finsbury Park in 2002. Pissed it down with rain during the day, especially during Air.

Went to Hyde Park, where it also rained! Highlight on that day was Love Vigilantes, was gutted when I heard they couldn't play Everythings Gone Green because of tech probs.

well i have been into nu ordr for 22 yrs now and my first Nu ordr gig was at wembley arena on the 10th of dec 1987.this is because my parents wouldnt let me go to a Nu ordr gig till i was 15.i loved the set which i had on a cassette until a few yrs ago. i thought it was wonderlicious.i remember barney saying "this song is for gene loves gezebell as they are big fans of ours"then played brocken promise off the brotherhood LP.

Hammy Palais Nov 1985, it was cold outside and I got my car bashed into before the gig on the Hammy roundabout (git!). ACR supported. NO played Elegia which was fantastic. I remember lots of blokes in long overcoats!

They finished with (by doing a rare encore in those days) a tune....and I quote "for all you meat-heads out there....".

Any guesses - yep it was Blue Monday even way back then they were sick to the back teeth of plaing it, so how do you think they feel these days? 'Bout the same as us die-hards having to listen to it too!

i was gutted when i missed joy division at the warehouse in preston, so imagine my disbelief when posters started appearing around chorley (new order where joy division)tatton comunity centre.81 now i swear to this day that it was new years eve they played although gigography says not?. even though i was really pissed at the time i do recall that they looked and acted very odd,almost scared. they played the usual suspects for the time but for me ceremony was the highlight,having slept with the 7" single under my pillow for months. next time was hacienda may 83 and WOW what a difference the confidence they had gathered was imense,the sound awsome,you just had to have been there it was totally amazing, i walked out at the end of the gig clutching my hacienda credit card membership thingy and thinking it was the best thing i had ever invested in. probally still is.

It was the first time they'd played Blue Monday at Tolworth, but it had been played a few times before that. It was the day that the Blue Monday 12" was released though!

June 1989, Mountain View, California. My first and only NO show--note to self: keep up on NO tour dates. My best friend and I were 14 and had to beg her older brother to drive us. Thinking of Barney on stage still brings back all the feelings today.

Probably because both The Wake and Gabrielle's Pish were both poor bands. I've seen the Wake enough times to realise that they were shit, as Mike says!

He did the same in Montpellier on January 20th, 1989.

That was my first NO concert. The weather was bad. Electricity suddendly went out whilst they were performing True Faith. We had to wait quite a long time for them to reboot "the Other Two's" Emulators II... And they played us True Faith again as an encore.

Must have the bootleg tape somewhere by ma&pa.

Miami Knight Centre December 14 or 15 1986.Yeah I know this gig ain't listed on this site.But I was there and they were the solo act.The unofficial after concert party was at club Fire & Ice Miami.That was the first time I went to F&I kind of a happening place for girlies.The band didn't show up,the crowd was pretty young,I was about 24 and on the older end of the people there.

You may be obsessed with them, but I have the sense of perspective to be able to give a balanced judgement. I've also played on the same bill as Gabrielle's Wish, and they were somewhat arrogant in the dressing room.

First JD gig : Russell Club in late 78. (Oct, IIRC) with Cabaret Voltaire. Aged 16!

First NO gig : Retford Porterhouse Jan 81 (flipping cold night, that!!)

Last NO gig : Hyde Park. I still have my Viking Badge.

And...The Wake were OK, first album 'Harmony', is ace, as are some of the singles. But The Stockhom Monsters were absolutely superb on a good night. Too much ale and they could be a shambles, but overall a totally great band - magical records with imaginitive arrangements, great atmosphere and soaring melodies. 'Alma Mater' is the one to get, but the singles comp on LTM is also really good. Alright?

my first new order gig was at the hacienda think it was june or july 1983 . Also does anyone no of any places in manchester where you can buy bootleg copies of gigs i no there use to be the undergrond market and afflecks palace but not any more.

The Happy Mondays gave a truly shambolic hypnotizing performance I remember.

As Shug recalls, New Order did indeed give a sterling rendition of 1963 with Barney giving an a capella of the chorus once the music had stopped which made the song even more emotional Factor in Mr. Disco, Vanishing Point, The Perfect Kiss, TBTHOG, and Ceremony and you had one great gig. I used to have a bad quality bootleg - does anyone have this gig as I'd love to hear it once more

Welcome Emile. The Mondays were indeed shambolic - what we saw was actually their soundcheck (they hadn't turned up for the scheduled soundcheck, so the first 6 numbers in the set were spent getting the sound right for Wrote For Luck). There wasn't time for them to do the set properly!

There is a decent recording of both sets doing the rounds.

First saw NO at Glastonbury this year, and along with Primal Scream they were easily the highlight of the weekend! The setlist was perfect, and the crowd were singing to their hearts content. It was one of the best atmospheres at a gig that I've ever seen. I was stood in front of Hooky, and had a great view of the man in action. Even the horse costume at the end didn't spoil it! Can't wait 'til they next tour.

I know, you told me... I suppose it was by accident, they don't really seem like arrogant people though we all can be sometimes, shit happens. Known many good musicians who were assoholes too, but still good musicians. From my point of view it's you missing something special, but you've seen them enough to have made your opinion, which won't change. The Wake were just a very little band, still after 20 years they haven't been forgotten, the LTM collectors still enjoy their music, so it's obvious they can mean something to Factory fans... the only problem is they made half a dozen of truly excellent songs, like Uniform and Pamela, but their albums and live set lists were probably too diminished by an abundance of average fillers, still good, but not the best they could have made really. Bands like ACR had a more consistent production, there were still weak songs, but you got half a dozen great tracks on each release, that's the difference which brings them to a superior league...

march 25 1989 glasgow. just turned 16 and been getting into them music since TF. queuing outside i almost shat with excitement hearing the soundcheck - 1963 was soo loud and hookys bass seemed to quake through the ground and up through my legs.

we were standing near the front, never been to a gig before in my puff and after a guy called gerald warmed us up with his voodoo ray they came on and mr disco kicked the place off, these keyboards rattled and sounded as if it would fall apart any moment, but didnt, was unbelievable how real it sounded than on record.

it was mental and id never experienced anything like it, my feet hardly touched the floor the whole night, a bouncing riot and they played 1963, all of technique (i think!) they dont play a bloody note of it now!

ha ha i dont think i could hear properly for about 2 days after!

Mine was Heaven 9 February 1981, and very emotional it was too! It had been almost a year since the last JD gig in London, and the anticipation was massive. No-one knew what to expect, except there wouldn't be any JD songs.

I was right at the front when they came on, and when on the opening song Barney started singing 'How I wish you were here with me now', we couldn't believe it! Was he really referring to Curtis? Of course, we later realised that 'In A Lonely Place' was actually a JD song. And then Hooky's amp kept cutting out, and he kicked out at the roadie!

It was actually good to get this gig out of the way, and subsequent gigs in Brighton, Forum, Tabernacle and so on were much more relaxed and enjoyable. And it seemed NO would be with us for a while...

John Peel was there that night at Heaven, so it will be a touching when they play QEH in his honour next week.

It's on Talbot Road, IIRC, not far from the Rough Trade shop. They still use it for theatre, small gigs etc. I was at the gig in 1981.

Yes, the Tabernacle was/is in Powis Square near the Rough Trade shop (though Rough Trade were still in Kensington Park Road at the time). It's a great building, but I recall only seeing one other gig there, being Lush around 1992. It was always more of a local community centre.

We only learnt of the Tabernacle gig the night before at the Forum, which was well sold out, and it seemed hurriedly arranged.

Sunderland Mayfair August 1984, playing it cool in the foyer when I heard some electro music I didn't know, can't be them, way too early I said. Was the start of Face Up, nearly missed my heroes

first of many and I hate to think how many hours and pounds have been spent since, but nothing I regret

Like Mandoman (several pages back) my first New Order gig was in 89 at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. I'm sure I have the ticket around here somewhere, but having moved too many times, I'm not going to try and dig it out. I'm sure it was May though. I believe the openers were Throwing Muses.

Highlight of the show was when somebody tried to climb up on stage through Hooky's amp and equipment. He went over there and booted him back off the stage. For this reason, a girl I met in grad school 8 years later said she thought he was the biggest prick in the world. I still think it's classic.

I saw them in Vancouver in 2001 (couldn't make the Gorge show the next day). Top gig. Too bad they haven't really played the Seattle area too often. I wanted to see them in 87, but they didn't play remotely close to us.

well im new to this site and to been keen on new order started about a year ago my m8 got me in to em and me first gig i saw was hyde park 2005 and that was absrelotly brilliant

Brixton Academy 1st December 1983, so this coming Thursday will seem just like old times. This was the one where a) Barney was off his face (I know, one of many), b) they were pretty shite and c) Sooner Than You Think was debuted.

First gig i went to was at the Town and Country Club in 1986 is very vague, cos i'd been cajoled into taking ketamine for a cold, and then told i was a tree. I vaguely remember them playing Thieves Like Us and Dreams Never End and Hooky getting moody about flowers being chucked onstage, but the rest is a blur.

Woolwich Coronet in about March 87 was better, cos they played Atmosphere (I think), and it cost about £3 or summink.

Most memorable one from that era was Wembley Arena about November '87, cos a bloke burst into tears behind me when they played LWTUA, and the whole place lit up like a Queen video during Face Up. First time I remember BLT being fucking ace, even though the band were in a different postal district from my seat. The strange extra spaceship noises during Perfect Kiss and Blue Monday still haunt me (and i was only on warm Hofmeister in plastic uncapped bottles)

yeah your right about the flowers being thrown on stage hooky makes a comment about do you think your at a smiths gig.i have a copy of this gig on vhs good quality aswell.

Still listen to the tape quite often, think it was done by Eddie Wolfram gassing away to his nearest and dearest as he liked to do. Somebody shouts something like "Hit me mama!" a split second before Temptation starts.

I'd heard the instrumental Taboo #7 at Sheffield Poly back in 81 and wore that tape out, then they played it on Beeb2's Riverside on Jan 4th and that was me hooked!

Very tense they were, not a word to anyone I dont think, all part of the mystique back then!

My first NO, as opposed to JD, gig was Retford Porterhouse 2/1/81. I was on my first Xmas hols after going to Univ and it was a great chance to see to them after missing the oop North gigs in late 80 due to being at Univ in the south. It was a really cold winter, with snow & ice for weeks, and I can remember worrying all the way there that it would be cancelled due to the weather. Four of us went down to Retford by car,(an old VW Beetle with a broken heater - constantly wiping condensation and ice from the inside and outside of the car windows!) as no trains were running from N. Lincs. Anyway I remember a really good set with both Mesh and Cries & Whispers - yay! Any idea if bootlegs exist of this gig? It would be great to relive it 26 yrs on! We were going to try and get over to Leeds two nights later, but the weather stopped us. The next time I saw them was the London debut at Heaven. Then the Talbot Tabernacle and Reading Univ on successive nights.

Another old bastard who's first gig was at Walthamstow, London in Sept 1981. Stood in the front row below Hooky who did not appreciate my camera flash in his face during Dreams Never End.:\ohwell: Suported by Dr Filth and Airstrip One, remember the singer of one of these bands looked like Nosferatu! Bit dissapointed as Simple Minds and Caberet Voltaire played the same night elsewhere.

I had to give up Pernod not long after but thankfully not seeing New Order live !

Mine's quite good quality too, surprisingly for that era. So were you the guy giving the cursory "wahey" after ICB?!

Mine was also Summer '89, an outdoor show looking down on the stage from a ski slope at a ski resort just outside of Park City, Utah--supported by PiL and the Sugarcubes. It was a great outdoor venue, although the band (excepting Hooky) seemed to be exhausted.

There's a really good chorus of 'More' after Ceremony at the end, you must have joined in that?! Then a big clunk as the tape was switched off - had yer nine songs already! DJ was playing Spandau Ballet as they came on too, quite an occasion then..

I memory serves me it was a friday and I couldnt concentrate at school all day cos that afternoon we were off to see the Order. So excited was I that I made sure we left early enough to be at the venue a full 3 hours prior to the gig, which wasnt met with complete satisfaction - I thought my brother and my mate would have wanted to stand outside and listen to the band soundcheck Run Wild and True Faith!

A bit tedious as it seemed to be one long song played by two men on keyboards - and it was! A few dickheads with dodgy punk gear got on me nerves when they kept feigning scared screams when the video screens showed strange looking clowns. I momentarily forgot about the Chems because Mr Dicken/Albrecht/Sumner or Joy Division/New Order/Electronic was watching at the side of the stage.

Lots of standing around and getting squashed in the waiting period after the gig. Some yank dickhead (no offence) tried to stop me from getting back to my place on my way back from the toilet. I tried to explain to him very politely that he was a dickhead who wasnt going to stop me from getting back to my spot but he didnt understand, repeating "You can either go around that way or that way, but you're not getting through here." Cock.

Anyway, the crowd got more rowdy when the Order arrived. But I loved it, squashed up against the railings. They opened with She's Lost Control, which no one expected. Ramblings about how they could have picked a better set list aside, it was brilliant. I was ecstatic to have seen the Order because I didnt think I'd get the chance - I was incredibly fortunate they chose to play so close to where I live. I loved the experiance and cant wait to see them again (hopefully).

Wasim--I was also at this show! If you didn't already know, in the MULTIMEDIA section on this site, there is a recording of the song 'Run Wild' from that gig.

I actually flew in from Florida to see them that friday night! Man...i was so psyched!!

My very first NO concert was at the Shoreline (Near SF) for their Republic Tour (with 808 State). That was an AWESOME concert. I remember the band before them could not finish their set because they were having some sort of technical problems. When they announced they would not be able to finish... They received a standing LOUD ovation in prep for New Order taking the stage sooner then expected...If I am not mistaken, they played a wider variety of songs compared to the Henry J Kaiser Gig. Didn't Bernard jump off the stage or something (cant remember if he was runnning and seemed like he jumped off or if he actually jumped off).

I too was at the Oakland gig in '05 and the Shoreline / Republic gig. The band that had to cut their set short was The The. I was quite pleased about that. Do you remember the bungee jumping and the Young Offender-On Limited Release T-shirt?

hook did a walkthru of the packed foyer. i rushed thru the crowd and grabbed his arm. when he whirled around quickly i could barely say a word. i raised my hand in greeting and turned away. to my best knowledge i was the only person who recognized him, or at least approached him.

hook came out on stage in the same white, malibu t-shirt with his hair held back in the same small bun-like ponytail.

i had described my meeting to all my friends and they were shocked to see that my pre-concert description of hook was accurate. i dont remember much to the show other than it ended with me making out with some strange girl who disappeared once the white lights came on.

First show; Market Street Cinema, San Francisco 1981... I think the godawful Simple Minds opened up and got booed off the stage before the band came on and cast a spell over the place... I remember seeing Greil Marcus pacing around just before writing one of the early major pieces about the band...

The same weekend I followed them to the I-Beam in San Francisco where they continued the haunting of the city... I think they closed with a very early version of Temptation that sounded so utterly fresh, alien and totally different to anything that was going on at that time that I cannot express it in words in 2006... to me this show was eclipsed only by the Echo Beach show in SF in 1983 which was the best rock concert I have ever seen in 40 years of concert going... the opening Age Of Consent remains one of the two or three most thrilling moments of live music my aging memory can recall...

1989 glasgow secc i was 18 a guy called gerald supported i was absolutely skint and didnt have enough money for the nice t shirt but got one a few months later when they played reading which is still my fav new order gig i think. last gig was a couple of months ago at the apollo in manchester.

It was Area One. Moby brought New order to Vancouver, Canada (their only Canadian date in like, what, 8 years or something?) it was raining when the chimes of 'Atmosphere' began to drip from the speakers as the fans of The Roots realized New order was not another rap band. It was my first, and probably will be my only time seeing them... Moby also brought Hybrid with him on a previous tour. Nice guy, too.

Heaven, or rather, the soundcheck when they played Joy Division instrumentals... Puts the current situation regarding 'Control' into perspective - about the vocal question - 2006 New Order should do JD instrumentally. Anyway, Heaven was a duff gig, even though Hannett was at the mixing desk (was he, on any other occasion?). Had to wait till Nottingham Rock City in April 81 to see New Order really cut it, like quicksilver, so nominate that one as "my first New Order gig"

my first new order gig will be the concert in MEN. New order played in Spain last year but i couldn´t go. I will arrive to manchester friday 27th and i,m very nervous. i hope see you there.

I actually went to both nights. The opening act was the Throwing Muses. I remember this concert because I just received the license plates to my car " NU ORDR". I also remember seeing NO at the Irvine Amp. NO played with the Sugar Cubes and P.I.L. This was before Bernnie needed a Tele Prompter for classic NO hits. Yes I noticed this at the April 28, 2005 concert in Oakland, California. Nonetheless, were would music be today if not for NO.

ManchestervCancer was the first time I saw NO - does that count though, seeing that they only played JD? I got into NO because of JD, so I loved the set anyway. Great to see Shaun Ryder and Bez again as well. I was just thinking "If John Cooper Clarke was here, I would have seen all my (living) Manchester (Salford, really) heroes in one night" and who wandered on stage? JCC himself!!!

Olympia, Paris, Nov 2001! I am French and considering that NO hadn't played In France since 89... Awesome gig though!, specially YSF and Crystal!

Atmosphere - Romeo and Juliets, Sheffield, 22 April 1981. First time in Sheff as NO, though I saw JD supporting Buzzcocks at the Top Rank in 1979. I must admit I had gone to see the Buzzcocks really, but JD blew them away and I've loved 'em ever since!

Ahh... the disadvantages of being young. I have yet to see New Order live. I got into them not a month after they completed their North American tour. Because irony rules my existance. It just makes me all the more antsy with hopes for another tour sometime in the future. <3

Actually B injured himself when he did a jig on the stage, as I recall. I don't think he actually jumped off, since I was right in front of the stage and I think I would have seen that pretty clearly.

Great Woods (pre-Tweeter Center) in Mass for Technique in 89.

Preston Guild Hall, 1985......the crowd kicked off, but the gig was awesome, NO were supported by Section25 who had just released "From The Hip".

The next one was the biggy: GMEX, 1986...tenth anniversary of punk in Manchester...a dream gig: NO, The Smiths, ACR, Cabaret Voltaire, Buzzcocks, OMD, John Cooper Clarke, John Cale, Howard Devoto, etc, etc.....an awesome alldayer......NO did an (rare in those days) encore.....'Ceremony' with Ian McCulloch guesting on vocals!!!! Genius....
