firstly, there were plenty of ladies whole-heartedly enjoying the gig(i.e. dancing, cheering and singing like total oafs), myself included. secondly, I think we have a vested interest in Bernard keeping his teeth. (if they are all his own teeth that is)

I bet the band loved it. When was the last time they got so close to a crowd? Particularly playing the old songs.

Barney was relishing it - asking the crowd to move back a bit "we don't want another Altamont"!

Hooky's "let's play this one for Ian" command made (what's left of) my hair stand up.

I wish I'd barged down the front. I was a bit stunned to be honest. And tired. And emotional.

Alright - I was pissed!

What a load of old tosh. For one, I am female - so there's at least 2 in attendance. Secondly, what do you class as middle class? So a lot of people ran to the front; if I could have stood up, I would have to. It's almost - well, no actually it is - saying that the 'fans' of NO ruined the night. I for one quite liked JP in the early days, but you know, marriage, kids, mortgages, bedtime stories, shift rotas, ironing etc etc etc sort of ruled out the radio at night;and anyway I'll express my honest opinion, the last 2 years or so of JP just weren't my cup of tea - so I went to see New Order! Because, for once, I was able to. They happened to be topping the bill on JP Day - the could have been topping the bill - or just on - at any gig that I could attend so that's why I went. I didn't heckle, shout during anyone else's set - in fact I went to sleep at one point - literally - but I did see a lot rush to the front when NO came on - doesn't that happen at any concert you go to? It's just made everyone look at NO fans as mindless he-man type thugs. Which, having met some in the pub prior...... joking! I didn't see any negative looks/comments by the band at all........ a load of old tosh. And as a ps, I had my badge on in Tesco today and a guy actually came up to me and asked me if I had been to the gig - upon my reply, he looked quite astonished - after all, I did look like a normal person!!!! You know, just like the rest of us (well, except I know how to have fun); apparently some 'middle class' people - women especially (please define) dont!!!!!!!!!! TOSH!!!!

Hardly warrants a reply, but John Peel would have loved it. He would have hated the thought of everyone staying in their seats and keeping quiet to be 'respectful'- be bleuugh. I've spent most of my life as an honouree bloke, so no problems there, obviously she didn't clock Janette's long blonde tresses directly in front of Hooky!!

Did seem like an odd venue for his tribute gig. Don't think John Peel would have approved, not that he got much say on the matter.

I think we met briefly - but not being one of the 'clique' gives me an outsiders view. It's all been taken out of proportion hasn't it? And I may have the badge, but I still don't feel like I've bought the t-shirt; JP must be laughing his head off at the lot of us - and especially the 'Press'.:(

when there was a row here a few months ago regarding the failure of some fans to stand at attention in the back of the room at the hammerstein gig, i was referred to as 'mr. wood' by an irate mannequin.

When I read the article it made my blood boil.

Lazy journalism par excellance. Not only did she get the date of Peel's death wrong, but she failed to listen to the introduction when it was said that the day was celebrating the anniversary of Peel's last radio broadcast.

As for it being 'hard to imagine' Peel being impressed - well she obviously has no imagination as well as being bone idle.

Very surprising that the Observer printed it, bearing in mind they are a supposedly highbrow notional paper. If it weren't for their excellent monthly music mag I might stop buying buying it.

All male ! My misses had a right old riot down the front in Turin and managed to get within spitting distance of hooky at the QEH.

I can see how some people may have been irratated by what happended at the QEH but that does not mean it was wrong !.

Yes, but the point surely is that you're missing the point. If by "clique" you felt a bit left our because other people seemed to know one another that's because, er, they do. Last time I looked it was called "friendship" - it's an old idea that many people buy into. There's no exclusivity - as long as you're not a total arsehole or a Cure fan you'll fit in just fine.

I think it's time to put this to bed! My point was that yes, because I do not know everyone, it gave me a clearer view; I was not implying that everyone's in the local PTA! I am glad to see that I'm not the only woman who receives an astonished reponse to liking NO and in my case JD. I have had that reaction for 25 years. I have not seen them in concert, but that does not mean I am any less of a fan. I guess I am considerably older than you which probably makes it doubly worse for me with reactions that I receive. It seems all the music that I like seems to shock people I don't know why? I am normal I have a good job and I suppose I am considered middle class considering my lifestyle. My husband cant stand them and a lot of the music I listen to, but as far as I am concerned the music I listen to is part of me and I don't care if I am not in the usual category of NO/JD fan. I am pleased this site exists as I don't feel so bad now.

Never bet on your own team, too much to risk. My one and only footy bet was £50 on us to lose a champs league game coz we were playing so badly at the time. The odds were ridiculous, 13-1 I think. We won 5-0.

We missed our train back to Crewe after the Old Trafford gig in 2002; found a taxi driver in the twon centre who quoted us £50 to get back to Stoke. Halfway down the A34 the cunt pulls over and says "sorry lads, didn't realize it was this far. It's gonna be another £50 or I'm leaving you here". Manc taxi drivers, eh? Bastards.

As for Crewe, I've noticed Mr Dario Gradi MBE hasn't shown up around here much since the trainspotters' dip in form. Excluding their weekend "blip", of course!

I had a tenner on us to win the league this season, at a generous 14/1. After 11 games we are 21st.
