Several of the Vikings are gonna keep me updated, so I'll just keep editing this post as the songs come in.

They are all several beers in and Al's latest text says "Liam has just blown Ian Curtis" pics to follow allegedly :thumb:

encore

Someone's pressed a wrong button in it - misfiring a bit at the moment. This isn't the tightest of performances, it must be said!

About 10 "CAH MON!" shouts in LWTUA. Hilarious. Who was responsible for all that?

Announcer giving a play by play of the encore break. How many sponges can they put on Steve? "And now Steve's shirt comes off."

"A quick turn-around. That's rock and roll. YES!!"

Best story so far - Al was drinking bottles of wine which apparently tasted shit and weren't strong. He had 8 or 9 bottles and by the time of the gig he was falling all over the place. I guessed something was up when I didnae receive an update every three or four songs :viking:

Was looking for you's all earlier, but located a free stash of Bud [don't ask] and it all goes a bit hazy after that. The 'oirish' were well up for it where i was located, i had a very enjoyable evening, jumping up and down with a 40 something year old bloke who was approaching 7 foot tall and singing our little heads off. Rough order of events....

Friday:

Meet up with Al and Bonzette for drinks in North London. Al and I contribute 4 mins to a 3 hour conversation. Stop at Al's gaff.

Saturday:

Arrive at airport 3 hours before flight. Check-in girl faints. Get to departures, see Graham Coxon wearing exactly the same gear he had on at Clapham Common last Sunday. Also see a lad who, about a year ago, bought my £12 Ladytron ticket for £92, on ebay. Decide to avoid. Catch delayed flight to Dublin. Collect hire car. Arrive at hotel. Can't work out out how to switch on TV. Realise I'm out of practice.

Steve drives me, Al and Dave Legge to Festival. Am the only person in the car with any CDs so make them listen to a selection of twee indie Swedish bands. Have 20 minute conversation with Steve and Dave about Lawrence from Felt/Denim. Al pretends to look interested. Establish that the band name 'Suede' wasn't inspired by 'Felt' or 'Denim' as Denim came along after Suede and Felt weren't much cop anyway.

Stop at only Cash Point we see in the 1 hour drive from Dublin to the Festival. Dave and myself have precisely 0 Euros between us. Cash point refuses to accept either Dave's or my bank cards. Now in even more debt to Al. ATR phones Al from the VIP bar, to request that we buy cans of cider for him. We don't.

Collect our passes and find a bar near the main stage. Al drinks small bottles of wine like they are pop. Al says "I've had 4 of these and I don't feel any different". Buys two more small bottles of wine. Al presents Gordie with an inflatable skeleton, called 'Ian' to give to ATR who's still in the VIP bar. Liam gives a passable impression of what he would be like with a blow up doll. Occasionally, people stop and ask about the skeleton. Liam reponds by kissing the skeleton. Using his tongue.

Bloc Party play and then ask everyone to enjoy 'Snooze Order'. Make mental note to smack Kele O, the public school twat if I see him at Dublin airport tomorrow. Move to the front and meet up with Angel *swoon*, CuanaD, Snoopy, Gerard and the two Motherwell lads - both totally cnuted. Liam is wearing a silly purple ladies hat. Some lad takes it off his head during the gig, then won't let him have hit back, for about 30 seconds. Liam looks like he's about to start crying. Lad gives him the hat back. Liam stands there with 1 hand on his head, clamping the hat in place for rest of the gig. Liam denounces the crowd as "crap".

Al now careering round the crowd. Out of control. Stumbling into people and shoving anyone within arms reach. Try to speak with Andy Liddle after the gig but Al interrupts every 3 seconds after Andy starts talking. Give up trying to persaude Al and Dave to return to the car. Wolfram and me spend AGES walking thru fields of campervans and parked cars. Eventually find our car and spend next 20 mins driving around fields in the middle of rural Ireland looking for two drunk lads from Luton. Fail. Around this time, Al sends suggestive text message to Angel. Dave phones to advise that CuanaD is giving them a lift back as they haven't a clue where the car is. Steve gets us back to the hotel in quick time.

Its now gone 1am. Hotel bar is shut. But can order drinks and sarnies in the lobby. Which we do. CuanaD safely deposits Dave and Al in the hotel lobby as we're waiting for the pints of Guiness they ordered by text. They are wasted. A Wedding reception is drawing to a close. About 20 guests are hanging around, with their 600 children. Al finds a plate of food in the lobby which someone has left. We demolish a tray of sarnies and sausages. Say goodnight to CuanaD and order another round of drinks. Woman comes over and asks us if anyone has seen the last tray of food from the Wedding buffet. We look as innocent as you can do with bread crumbs down your shirt and ketchup on your chin. Dave talks us out of a kicking. Woman invites us into the residents bar for a drink. We slope off to bed before it gets nasty.

Sunday:

Steve and Dave miss brekky cos instructions in the hotel room are wrong. Al and I discuss our breakfast for 10 minutes. Around this time, Al sends an apologetic text message to Angel. Angel wishes Al a hangover. She needn't have worried. Return car to car hire. Arrive at check-in before it's open. Check-in girl faints. See Pat Jennings in departures with exactly the same haircut he had in 1978. Al tells poor Pat Jennings joke (not to Pat Jennings). Realise I've lost my prescription sunnies.

Somewhere in the middle of all that NO play a gig.

That was even funnier than actually being there.

Nice work, JG!

Were you really not able to find the others or were you actually trying to make a swift exit so as to not have to listen to “I can’t believe we’re still fcuking lost”, “I don’t remember seeing tents”, and “this definitely doesn’t look familiar” over and over and over and over and over ad nauseam....poor Cuana D got it in the neck instead while you lot were ensconced in your hotel swilling pints. :evil4:

A strange day it was, first ever gig and first time ever seeing the band to me. Mari and I decided to go all the way and spend all three days at the festival: there were good bands here and there and also some obviously crap ones (although I'm sure Mari will disagree with me on Gary Numan and the world music Spinal Tap that is Rachid Taha :evil4: ).

Sometime near the end of the Super Furries' set we got a SMS from CuanaD speaking about the Order arriving to the Hotpress tent. We had had no idea of the whole thing, hadn't been on the net since Friday morning. We had to wait for The Frames and their fans to get the fuck out of the tent so we could get to the front. Which we did, but NO were late about 40 minutes or so; "delayed by Dave Fanning" according to the guy who did most of the interview. So there we just sat nervously; two Vikings took the piss out of us because we didn't feel like drinking. It was all in good spirits though, even the joke about doing a Mexican wave just when NO would come out. I'm sure CuanaD must have been sitting to the right in his green NOOL shirt and camera, but we didn't even have the guts to go and say hello to him, bugger! We were just so nervous about seeing the band so close.

The interview was hilarious, I couldn't stop laughing for most of it. I can't remember that much about it anymore so I hope Spotnick or someone will help CuanaD in putting that interview file up for everyone! I'll just write down what I remember.

Have to agree with Angel (in the other thread) that the interviewer did a decent job, he seemed to have read most of the latest news from NOOL at least. Hooky cracked me up by trying to look all shocked when people started clapping during the entrance of the Order. Phil arrived a bit late and as usual he and Steve said the least. There was talk about Steve doing the soundtrack for Cracker (which is a mini-series, just three weeks or so in October), The Best Of Electronic (which Barney didn't comment much on because he obviously has fuck all to do with it!), Hooky's bookwriting (and he said the same as in a recent interview: "I've just bored everyone I know with stories about the Hacienda so I just might write a book about it"). He said he's written about three words for it so far which would be the title (which caused Barney to start counting the words: "How To Run...").

The promised quick follow-up to WFTSC was given a NO (big surprise) from the band because they haven't apparently recorded anything in addition to the seven leftover songs; the interviewer asked if it was going to come out in 2008 and didn't get anything definite out of them. About Control: they said that they had recorded (or will record) about 1,5 minutes of music for the entire soundtrack (because there's Bowie and Iggy and such on it already). Then they talked about their past photosessions with Corbijn and so on.

There was usual talk about Barney's favourite tracks that he's done (nothing that we didn't know already, NO: Temptation, JD: Atmosphere) and they were also taking the piss out of Gary Numan (apparently there was a fan of his in the tent), Courtney Love and Gang Of Four (who were the next to be interviewed). Also some talking about the first gigs they ever went to, Hooky jokingly claiming that for him it was the Sex Pistols, Barney taking it a step further by saying it was The Velvet Underground and Steve admitting that for him it was Status Quo when he was eight years old and he had taken his mum and dad with him. Go Steve!

Best moment for me was when they started to reminisce about the Irish gigs they'd done: Kilkenny 1983 obviously came up. The Order said that the atmosphere on that one was close to a fucking wedding reception and supposedly there was a guy near the front of the stage with his mouth open all the time, expecting the band to pour wine into it! Explains most of the immortal Barney quips during that gig.

The question about the small amount of touring was quickly handed over to Barney by Hooky; Barney mostly went on about being sick last night, having vomited all over and then joking about NO's floorfillers. :p

The audience asking questions at the end was pretty much the usual stuff: the Cliff Richard question was followed up by Steve commenting on it being appropriate because other obscure rock geniuses like Arthur Lee and Syd Barrett had died this year. The guy asking about Neil Tennant didn't seem to have any idea of the difference between NO and Electronic! Then they were asked about the current bands and who they would like to work with, blah blah. Someone asked about the drum intro to BM: "a happy accident or a stroke of genius", to which Steve said: "happy genius".

Speaking of which, I got the Happy Genius' autograph before they all went to prepare for the gig. It made the long trip and the nights slept at the tent all worth it for me, especially since it's likely I won't be seeing them for a long time again. You bastard Steve, thank you.

The gig itself: it didn't matter a fuck to me how the band performed, they certainly didn't seem all that tight and were making mistakes all the way. And the setlist didn't matter to me either; AOC or Procession in the middle of all of that would've been perfect but obviously too much to ask for. I just sang along out of tune during the entire gig and moshed and jumped around although I was still nowhere near true Viking behaviour. I did see the inflatable skeleton and Al Jarvis (unmissable, obviously!) standing at Hooky's side. Alex got a greeting from Hooky right at the beginning, other notable banter by him included Kelly Osbourne's marriage ("your mum and dad's gonna kill you!") and "the Sugababes" (the girls who were dancing backstage at the beginning of Temptation). At the beginning of BLT he cracked me up by stepping around like a disco diva. As usual, he and Phil liked playing the most, jamming at the end of BM a bit when Steve and Barney had left. Phil pretended trying to knock over the keyboards during Temptation. The fondest memory though, is Hooky's big, warm smile during the gig. He enjoyed it, the big bastard!

Thought the crowd was good myself; everytime someone tripped over in the front people around quickly lifted him/her up. The kids enjoyed LWTUA and BM the most, as usual. Temptation and PK were the highlights to me; I was chuffed about hearing the latter even as a torso because it's my favourite NO track. The hard synth bit during Hooky's syndrum bit wasn't very audible in the audience but seems to be intact on the webcast. Barney tried a wimpy solo at the end. Here's hoping that they'll restore it to its full length and/or play some of the other old favourites in October!

Ok, over and out for me. Thanks to CuanaD for the Hotpress alert (and sorry for not meeting you!), Shug and Tock for the broadcast they both recorded, and to Mari who was a proper silent nerd just like me. We've deserved our Steve's Quiet Life badges. :thumb: Maybe we'll get back to the British Isles for the Order again one day.

Did get to meet Snoopy & sean o'ceallaigh there anyway, so I would have felt like some minor celebrity if anyone else had come over to shake my hand! :D

How did you remember so much of the interview? very impressed! I emailed it to Nick today, so hopefully he will be able to split it into 3 9minute segments for youtube, or host it somewhere himself.

if it makes you feel any better, I do feel guilty for not pushing my fellow silent nerd a little more to answer your textmessage ;) Because that was just brilliant sitting at front row for the interview, VERY grateful you tipped us! Ah, $%#^#@# , we did actually look your way wondering 'if'... yeah, we were both pretty starstruck and overwhelmed, anyway.

So noone recorded the interview?

I'll reread Gaius account and see where I can fill in.

edit: Only thing I can add is that, according to Steve, the Cracker series is actually just a two-nighter, one episode cut in half. Very mini indeed.

And asked about other concerts the rest of the year, perhaps coming back to Ireland, Barney answered something like "if you have the choice between Argentina and Ireland, what would you do?" Some talk from the Hotpress guy about the rain, and sunny Manchester in comparison.

Daarrr !! Yeah I'll agree with that, though at the time I thought we were stone cold sober ..... ish. I only realised how bad I was when the next afternoon, I could remember what songs the boys played, but I had no idea which order they played them in (apart from finishing with BM, but that is gimmie these days) !! Yes & your also right, Mr Giles, at the JP night I'm in a picture with a flag that just says "The Vikings" with "New Order" underneath, it must be because the colours of the flag are black and white that I assumed it also says "Widnes" on it somewhere !

And Conrad, if you want to send me that interview, I will split it and put it somewhere for people to download.

To be fair, my phone pretty much died right after I had received Conrad's first SMS but I did give you his number before that. ;)

There's some stuff from the interview that I most likely got wrong. And some bits I forgot still keep on coming back like the first gig Phil saw (Mark Farner) or Barney's vomiting tales from the Hacienda. So if you get the interview posted I'll be watching it with glee again.

Funnily enough the guitarist from Bloc Party was heartily enjoying New Order just in front of me. This was the skinny guy with the stupid hair who doens't sing. Him and some bird were doing some of the weirdest dancing I've ever seen. And I had just watched Barney dancing.

I reckoned it was the bass player who came out with the Snooze Order line, so decided not to pick on the weedy guitarist.
