Smiths star launches massive Manchester gig

Andy Rourke returns with 2008 Versus Cancer charity show 4 hours ago

The Smiths' Andy Rourke has announced details of next year's Versus Cancer gig.

The bassist organises an annual concert in hometown Manchester to raise money for the local Christie Hospital and Genesis Centre, with previous shows featuring the likes of Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown and Paul Weller.

This year's concert will take place on February 23 at the MEN Arena, with the line-up to be confirmed soon.

"This year's gig is going to be talked about for years to come. We've got some of the biggest bands of the moment lined up as well as some legendary acts that haven't performed live for a long time," explained Rourke of the 2008 event.

In the meantime, the bassist has also launched a "join the line-up" campaign to get fans and musicians to wear a special pin badge in the run to this year's event.

"Basically, we've always been about loads of people getting together to make a stand and do something special," said Rourke of the new effort, "and this year we wanted everyone to be able to be a part of it."

They've nicked the Vikings badges idea :eek3:

Well, I've booked tickets (just in case), but this is dependent on the line-up - wasn't too impressed last year...

Nice of them to provide a link, though, to those who'd bought before! :)

I've just booked 6 standing tickets at £40.00 each with a service charge of over £5.00 per ticket and a delivery charge. £280.00! Blimey Moses!

The line up had better be good :eek3:

You do have a point, but as always I'm scared of missing something so I will risk it!

I also agree the Bunnymen were the highlight of last years gig - can we get them again?

Edit: Actually, I quite liked the Charlatans! :)

Unless this event has a better line-up (or at the very least, Freebass), then I shall part with my ticket(s)...

Oasis' Liam Gallagher to lead Manchester supergroup?

Jan 3, 2008

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is set to head a supergroup next month in Manchester.

According to The Sun’s Bizarre column, the singer will team up with legend Ian Brown, and Freebass - the band featuring The Smiths' Andy Rourke, New Order’s Peter Hook and Mani from Primal Scream - at Manchester Versus Cancer charity concert.

The event will take place on February 23 at the MEN Arena.

The Freebass collective has been a side project for the three bass masters for several years.

The band have reportedly been recording an album together, calling in vocal favours from singer Tim Burgess and Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie.

Kro Bar in Piccadilly Gardens.

I'm meeting a couple of Luton fellas there.

Actually, I haven't even told them that yet, but it's opposite my hotel and I find the bloolights in the Wetherspoon's way too unnerving. :eek3:

Next years lineup:

Snow Patrol, The Kooks, Scouting For Girls, KT Tunstall, Travis, The Courteeners, with XFM DJ's.

This event has been hijacked by XFM, and they are ruining it just like they ruined and killed D: Percussion. Just you wait and see, next year the DJ's will get more time than the bands.

Thank fuck i wont be around to see it.

...what a load of arse...Noel last year sounded amazing, granted, king Monkey sounded turd as ever (and i love him & the roses) but he has the charisma, attitude and love of the mancunians to pull it off. I'm fed up of seeing people moan about the line up this year and any other year for that matter - it's for CHARITY....for fcuk's sake, a really good one at that and local to us, if all you're waiting for is some amazing music festival line up, why don't you just chip off and get your festival tickets in the summer, or is it too much for you to work ou which is the best one? It's your choice whether you want to commit to buying a ticket or not, you take your chance and wait to see who's announced - but at the end of the day you're paying around 40-50 sheets to see a bunch of bands who will at least put (hopefully) smile on your face....and they will make the effort to entertain as well....

...seriously, get a grip, lose the snobbery and remember you're paying to see these bands for a very good charity.

WHEY! First review, everyone's meeting up in town this dinner, but I've got some clearing up to do at home, sorry folks. Gig was great, though I was sorry to miss FARM and The CARPETS.Got in while THE VIEW were on.Not really a fan of FUN LOVING CRIMINALS,but liked THE FRATELLIS and THE ENEMY. Stars were HAPPY MONDAYS sounded great, great banter between Shaun(sporting a mohican) and Bez, "Gerroff me yer daft cnut". My misgiving of this gig was there wasn't the collaborations which had made the previous gigs so special. But at Nth hour, lo and behold, for the finale BADLY DRAWN BOY on vocals, joined by HOOKY,POTTSY,ANDY ROURKE,DENISE JOHNSON (ACR) and 2 others I didn't recognise. On the big screens a big tribute to Tony wilson. Great versions of PLEASE PLEASE LET ME GET WHAT I WANT, LWTUA and Lennon's INSTANT KARMA.

Where were you VIKINGS? Yer daft buggers £40 on a night out in KRO BAR! Never mind,a big hello to everyone who was out,in MEN Julie and Rosie,Greg,Dave Clark,Burt,Midnight Blue; and everyone else in Piccadilly, Tim,Shug,Jemmie,Col,Bonz,Liam,Jert,Minxie,Banshee,Sandra,Nick King,Al,Baldrick,Lord & Lady NUTS and anyone I missed sorry! Here's some piccies, Anton Corbijn must be shitting himself...

PS SHUG! Thanks for the FAC 383 and TONY WILSON badges mate!!

Hello all. New poster here. Not really a New Order fan but this is the most active thread about the gig so thought i'd finally post on it.

What a top night. Quick review.

The Sticks - Half of them are from Rochdale so we thought we'd get there early to check them out. Not bad! they didnt let the size of the arena faze them and felt sorry for them when there set was cut short! Check them out http://www.myspace.com/thesticksmanchester

The Farm - Not really my thing but I think there early time caught a lot of people out as I had a few people ask me if they'd been on later in the night. "All Together Now" was the first highlight of the night.

Inspiral Carpets - Not overly familliar with there stuff but thought the frontman was a bit crazy before calming down a bit and finishing off a rather polished set with "This is how it feels", another early sing-a-long.

The View - They were better than I thought they'd be. I don't mind the view. They did a few new songs and were the first band to get the crowd really dancing to the tune of "Wasted Little DJs" "Superstar Tradesman" and of course "Same Jeans".

Athlete - Wern't half bad at all. "Wires" sounded really good. Not familiar enough with there other stuff to get into there set but they were still pretty good. Wasn't sure what crowd reaction they'd get but they were well recieved.

Fun Lovin Criminals - Not my thing, good at what they do but thought it was an odd choice for a night like this. Scooby Snacks went down well.

Happy Mondays - Paddy McGuinnes introduced them and the crowd went mental. First time the whole arena was on there feet. Everyone knows there not what they used to be but they still deliverd a top set, Bez's dancing is still quality and copied by almost everyone in the crowd.

The Fratellis - I was slightly diaspointed by them to be honest. I think the sound got lost in the Arena which can happen to some bands. Vocals wern't very clear at all but they got the crowd going with Chelsea Dagger.

The Enemy - Superb. There only going to get bigger. Would not suprise me at all to see them sell out the Arena in the not too distant future. Cocky as anything but they have the tunes to back it up.

Finale - Collaboration between Andy Rourke, Peter Hook, Steve White and Badly Drawn Boy. Played a few songs I didnt know, Love Will Tear Us Apart and a Smiths song. Will have to get hold of some BDB stuff now because thought he was excellent.

A top, top night and I'm looking forward to next years gig already. Only let down was the poor organization at the Arena - the standing floor was completely rammed full and to have just one bar and toilet area was ridiculous, couldnt let it spoil the night though.

A lot of the gig is playing on XFM Manchester website. If you go to www.xfmmanchester.co.uk and Listen Live, go the the Listen Again and its on Clint Boon's Boon Army. Tried recording it but every program I use is useless...

Speaking of scousers, funniest moment for me was in the Arena, when i got collared by two Scouse lasses, (one of which is crazyh, i think), saying they know me, and then called me Burt. Missed the farm:\ohwell:

very dissapointed at the end, cant stand that badly drawn boy geezer.

I think everyone thought someone else would be coming on after him.

Had 3 spare seated tickets and the touts were wanting to buy em for a fookin pound, robbin bastards! :nono:

TBH i spent more time at the bar than i did in my seat, which is nice!

Bit of as bloody trek to the KRO bar from the venue, was nice to meet a few more faces tho, cant remember them all but i think i met,Monty,Dave Legge,Burt, liam, and of course Nick king in the smokers corner :thumb:

To anyone else i talked to and forgot to mention i do apologise but i was very very drunk at the time!

I have very little recollection of the gig, semi remember Fratellis doing Chelsea Dagger and the Criminals doing Scooby Snacks, the Mondays were ace cos I remember dancing like an eedjit, but I cannae remember anything other than Kinky Afro. Were the FLC on before or after the Mondays????

Got seperated from the Corby Order and spent most of the night with the two Sunderland lads. Ended up walking for what seemed like hours before magically finding Eddie and his missus. We then spent an hour with a bottleofrush before Darren turned up so we could get tucked into the crate of beer in the car.

I ended up drinking saidrush thinking it was beer much to the amusement of everyone else, thank god we had loadsa beer to wash it down. Can't remember anything after that, though I do know that I woke up without me phone.

I hope Baldrick has it, but I have had no joy getting in touch with him. I am a disgrace.

Just found this from another site Eddie :

Caution: Flammable, harmful if swallowed, skin and eye irritant. If swallowed, drink two glasses milk or water, induce vomiting, call physician. For eye contact, flush with water. Avoid prolonged inhalation in confined areas. Keep out of reach of children.

 Milk or Water! 6 or 7 bottles of lager in my case. But......

You're definitely not supposed to drink it though. I remember at the Hacienda years ago, there was a craze of pouring the poppers into a half empty water bottle, making it last much longer. Some poor girl necked it and ended up violently sick and in A and E all night!

Just found this from another site Eddie :

No There is a Light That Never Goes Out by Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher. And Ceremony by New Order and Bunnymen.

Did the Mondays do WFL last weekend? If so, that's the second time for that one as well.
