October 20th 1987 Newcastle Riverside: Don't think this one happened. HM were supporting James and "arrived at the venue too late to perform", probably too stoned. Instead we got an extra long set by James who, sadly, were in the middle of one of their shit phases.

Just checked, the gig they blobbed on was September 12th 1988. If they were supporting James on a full tour then it looks like most dates are missing.

best i would say was the g mex with 808 state and barney coming on for a tune, the whole atmosphere and being young, but i remember manchester being shite for trying to find a cargo.

The dates 5th Oct to 27th Oct were the dates they supported James mate.

By the way if anyone has any live recordings of the Mondays, whether it be on tape,cd,video etc can you please let me know as Id love to know what youve got. I'll definately be able to give you some good stuff in return :o)

Would anyone know what date the final Other Side of Midnight Party was held? the one were the Mondays played.

Did a load of these in the late eighties/early nineties. My fave one was at ULU, which ended up turning into a big riot, with police horses called into the venue.

OCT 2nd - Tower Ballroom .Top night supporting New Order.Thought the Mondays were shit on this first viewing though , coupled with being impatient for the Order to come on

1989:

MAR 26th - Birmingham NEC .Not a bad gig but not that memorable either.Again , supporting the Order.A great way to spend an otherwise boring Easter Sunday.The weather was tops for late March as i recall.

1991:

AUG 4th - Cities In The ParkNow yer talkin'!! Me ,my bro and a mate were right down the front for this one.Sweaty and crushed to fcuk but a memorable night with the Mondays on top form

1992:

OCT 24th - Wolverhampton Civic Hall A wet night in Wolverhampton seeing the Mondays come to a wet end to their Halcyon days.Or maybe they had already come to the end. We had more of a laff after the gig in Wolverhampton city centre drunkenly throwing some , er, body popping moves to the black girls with their ghetto blaster before receiving threatening glares from their.... hmmmm... how would i describe them?... 'Pimps'? . We wandered around Wolverhampton in the pissing rain before ending up sleeping in the motor for the night.

I recall us talking about making the trip out to the Ibiza KU Club gig, June 28th 1990 to catch em.There was an all-in-one trip (can't remember how much it cost) advertised in NME or something that included flight , a week's accomadation, a couple of nights entrance to a club and ticket for the Mondays gig.Didn't do it in the end though.

i am in shock. happy mondays played blackburn top hat in 1987 !! the place was tiny,never had bands on because it was the roughest place in lancashire!!. well well,you learn something new every day. actually my brother took me top hat to lose my virginity

Above (but 1) It was the july 90' dates, made up 'Call the cops' video, also recorded 'Pills n thrills while out there. This was their second trip stateside, the first was a fleeting visit a half dozen dates round the time WFL was re-released (summer 89'). Theres a few typo's here so if anyone is unsure ask me or Tad

First time they went was '86 mate I beleive, there is that famous photo of them with the world trade centre towers in the background.

The '89 gigs over there were fuckin quality, especially the one at the New York Ritz.

They played Northumbria University in Newcastle November 89 - I know this cos I turned up without a ticket and a newly purchased 7" gatefold Madchester Rave On EP, caught Shaun Ryder tending to his centre-parting through a window. Tapped on said window, got flicked the Vs, then soon after Mr Ryder Snr appeared at a fire exit said "oi you two cunts, come here", wherby we were ushered into the inner sanctum of the Mondays - who shared their booze, their drugs, signed my record, and then after hanging out showed us to the stage - where the Mondays gave an amazing performance.

Had no money and had to contemplate walking home from Newcastle to South Shields (think the Great North Run), but walking along the motor way got a lift from a friendly taxi driver who took pity on us.

Saw them at Belle Vue, Manchester with New Order, A Certain Ratio and a bag full of other bands. Don't remember the date but it must have been quite early. Got the ticket somewhere, I'll try and dig it out.

They allegedly did a Japanese tour in 1990 (with A Guy Called Gerald as support), although I have yet to find evidence of this...

They did 3 shows in Japan in October 1991 cos Ive got the advert for the gigs. Not sure what venues they played tho cos I cant read Japanese :o)

Does anyone know what the full line-up at the Elland Road Leeds gig was as we've being trying to remember who was on when the guy climbed the floodlight pylons (we remember he was christened the 'Brave Raver', but can't remember by whom?

They played Iceland in March 1990 and also Amsterdam just before that. Not sure of the exact dates but they were before G-mex. They went with the Brain Club with A Guy Called Gerald to Iceland. MTV did a feature on them being there. cheers

...been meaning to contibute to this thread for a while - as I also did loads of Mondays gigs in the late '80s.
I've listed below gigs which I definitely was at - I've been looking at the recordings I have and cross-matching to the gigography. I'm also aware that I probably saw them on a number of occasions that I don't remember - the NO dates at Leed Tiffanys, Tower Ballroom, and the Hacienda ( the 2 sets night in Dec 85 - presumably before the 2nd set?). Also caught them few times on the James tour late '88 - Trent Poly for one.

A couple of potential updates to the gigography:

• Dublin - was definitely St Paddys - 17th March - remember flying over on a Friday night - the place was half empty, but I remember speaking to Nathan who was made up that anyone had bothered to travel to see the band.
• Leicester Poly - March '89 - pretty sure this was cancelled - as I found out having driven from London on a Friday evening only to drive home again.
• Leeds Poly - Nov '89 - also have a note in an old diary which says this was cancelled(? )
• Paris - I'm not 100% when this was but don't think I went in '90 - it was a dodgy club in the red light district but I don't remember MBV on the bill. The set list ( Do It Better, Bring A Friend, Tart Tart, Russell, Moving In With, Performance, Mad Cyrill, 24Hr PP, WFL) would place it as early '89 - wish I could remember more.

Glasgow was the last time I saw the Mondays - we went down to the Cotton Club (?) for the end of tour aftershow and the end of that era for me anyway...hard to believe 20 years have passed.

Cancelled for Top of the Pops with The Roses I believe!

I know for sure the Mondays played in Toronto before the 1990 gig. It would have been in 1989 and it was with the Pixies. I believe it was at a place called the Apocalypse Club.

Did King of the Slums support them at this gig? I don't remember a mass brawl, I was on stage or just off stage for most of their set. I was in a right messy state and I remember a bit of carnage on the stage but don't recall it kicking off. But as I say...I was a bit messy.

at the tower ballroom gig the wonderstuff were on first then the mondays....i remember the sound was a bit muffled but the band were on top form...then new order...played a blinder as usual....bez came up to my mate during no set asking if he had any gear going free....poncing bstard...lol

Another Mondays gig was January 30th 2001 at The Palace in St.Kilda,Melb. Australia with Gerling as support.

The Paris 1991 gig was on the 1st of March on the Friday at La Cigale not the 2nd of March on the Saturday. It was a very good night in Paris. I met Bernard Lenoir at The Happy Mondays gig - the French John Peel and the man who famously recorded Joy Division at Les Bains Douches for France Inter and infamously stopped broadcasting it half way through because he thought it wasn't very good, but he was a very nice man.

The Mondays finished quite early and afterwards my friends and I carried on drinking in the Pigalle/Montmatre the place was overun with Welsh rugby fans who were there for the five nations match the next day.Then we went to La Locomotive club next to the Moulin Rouge because they had a Heavenly records night with East West,Flowered Up,Saint Etienne and The Manic Street Preachers.I actually met Bez coming out as I went in I went "alright Bez" and sort of pushed him slightly on the shoulder and he nearly fell over! He went "alright man" with a big smile and staggered off into the night.

Saint Etienne were first up making their Paris debut it was before Sarah Cracknell joined they had a singer who could have been a model she was wearing a Barbie dress and came on commando everytime she spun round the audience got a right eyefull my Parisian friends still talk about it till this day. Flowered Up were a bit like the Mondays but nowhere near as good. Dozed off on a staircase shortly aterwards and got woken up by the Manics starting Motown Junk at 3 a.m. quite strange in a Disco. Not a bad night out though.

PS La Loco wasn't a dodgy club I saw Revenge play their first gig there the year before on a Hacienda Club night it was a great place!
