manchestermusic indie & rock Joy Division snatch Oasis accolade

Zoe Jones

Winners: Hook and Curtis
MANCHESTER music fans disagree with a national radio poll last week that put Oasis on top.

Virgin Radio compiled a list of the greatest songs ever to come out of Manchester with Oasis’s Live Forever just grabbing the top spot from the Stone Roses' Fools Gold.

However a new poll compiled by ManchesterOnline from hundreds of readers' votes, proves that Mancunians prefer their classics.

The new poll shows that Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart gained 70 per cent more votes than its nearest rival.

Manchester’s coolest band from the late 1970s gained their reputation for the intensity of their performances and the power of their lyrics.

The band that put the indie record label Factory Records on the map released its most famous track after the suicide of Ian Curtis, the band's frontman, in May 1980.

The full results of the ManchesterOnline poll are as follows:

  1. Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
  2. Stone Roses – Fools Gold
  3. Smiths – This Charming Man
  4. Oasis – Live Forever
  5. Buzzcocks – Ever Fallen in Love
  6. Happy Mondays – Step On
  7. New Order – True Faith =8. James – Come Home =8. Badly Drawn Boy – Silent Sigh
  8. Doves – There Goes the Fear
